roan like Quay, with his accredited
shrewdness, could entrap himself
as he has. The fact is, most polit
ical bosses descend to such ques
tionabte methods to gain power
that, in the long run, their moral
Feasibilities, if they had any at the
outset of their political career, be
come calloused. And when they
reach the zeuitb of that power they
believe themselves superior to the
law.
The worst case of this type was
that of ''Boss Tweed, who, with the
most refreshing and unconcealed
impunity, robbed New York city of
untold millions. , When confronted
by public opinion, he coolly inquir
ed, "What are you going to do a-
bout it?" However his Nemesis
eventually overtook him, and he
died in prison. .
But the lilliputians of his class,
these later days, do not 6cem to
profit : by the fate of the most
princely bandit ever known in

On Sunday Frank Coo ins left Arling
ton in a sail boat bound for Ross
Beardsley's ranch, about ten miles np
the river on the Washington side. The

ana, where it had lodged in an eddy,
with all the supplies he had taken from

made bat no trace of the man can be
found and the supposition is that be was
