Michigan where in 18I8 he was marrivd to Miss Rhoda Davidson who with the three children born to them, still sur vives, him. The children are U. F. and J. E. Downer, and Mr. Alice Brown, all ot whom are residents ot this vlcinitv In 1849 Mr. Downer crossed the plains to laiiiorma and was one of the first pioneers of Butte county, in the Golden State. He established the first genera store, was the first postmaster and own- ea the Bret ferry In that conntv. being tnen located at Oroville. He returned to Michigan in 1861 via the Cape Horn route and the following year recrt ssed the plains this time taking his family wim nira w me golden west. The family resided in California until 1877 wheirthey came to Oregon and, two year later, settled in Gilliam county wneretney have since resided. The deceased was a consistent mem ber of the Church of Christ, of this citv and was held In high esteem as a neigh bor ana as a man. The funeral occurred on Sondav' from the church, Rev. Hurlburt conducting me services. . A Sad Death. J. B. Fraier, of this place, received the sad intelligence on Thursday of last week of the death of his youngest sister which occurred at her home at Bethel. rwg county, on the previous dav. So particulars of the sad event was given in the telegram other than that death was caused by the discharge of a gnn, which was supposed to have been accidental. Mr. Fraaer left at once for Bethel, hop ing to reach there in time for the funeral bich occurred on Friday. The following particulars of the da. plorable affair we clip from the Polk County Itemiser; Eine. the 17 year old daughter of L. B. Fraaer and wife, of Bethel, com mitted suicide on Wednesday morning. After breakfast, while ber mother was out milking, she loaded a gun, placed we mustle to oer breast and touched it otr wUh a stick, the charge going through her heart. When Mrs Frazer returned to the house she heard Effie groaning and thought she was sick, bat soon learned the sad reality. She lived out naif an hour.
