To Build a Court House.
A delegation of representative citlaon
of this place appeared before the county
court on Hattinliiy and laid before that
body a proposition looking to the early
erection of a suitable court honse for
Oilllam county,
The proposition wa based on the fact
that the present structure, in which are
located the county ofllcea, ia entirely
Inadequate to the need of tho county,
that a large majority of the Uxpayort
of the county are believed to be In favor
of tho ereution of a suitable building,
and that the present I perhap a op
portune a time to make the necessary
Improvement as any time In tho future
will be. The proposition was aocoui
pauled by a city warrant for (500 and a
guarantee from the people of thi city
for $500 addition), making $1,000 which
tho city of Condon agrees to donate
toward a court house for Gilliam comity,
The mattor was discussed at length
by the member 'of the court and the
visitors, and during the discussion both
of the Commissioner expressed them
selves a being of the opinion that the
county need a new court house, and
that It ahould be built without further
delay. Judge Mariner, however, ap
peared tc wish to adopt more dilatory
tactic, and, while he admitted that the
county soitt I unquestionably perma
nently located at Condon, that a new
court house will have to be built some
time, and that the county can well afford
to build it now, and that it can bo done
without either jeopardising the credit
of the county, or becoming a preceplable
burden on the taxpayers, still he seemed
to think that the matter might be laid
over for a yoar or two.
It wa Anally decided to allow the
matter to go over to the next meeting
and during the interim the member of
the court will post themselves a to the
teal sentiment of the people on the mat
ter. It seemed to be the unanimous
opinion of the court that if a house i
built it ahould be a nhstantial, brick
structure, one that would answer the
purpose for which It It Intended for
year to come, and It wa believed that
such a building could be erected for
something like (6,000.

State Tax Levy Made.
SALEM, Or., Jan. 6. The date tax
levy for 1800 will Ite S 710 mills, against
3 mill for 1898. This decision was
reached by the governor, secretary of
state and stale treasurer at a meeting
held today, when they Inspected the
summaries of assessment rolls of all the
counties In the state, which they ob
tained at the secretary of atate's office.
The amount expected to be raised bas
not yet been made public.
The Increase In this year's levy over
that of last year is due to unexpected
items In the general appropriation bill
passed at the apeclal session of the
legislature,.. Including 111,000 for the
legislature of 1807, which did not or
ganise; 33,000 for the pnrrhase of the
branch asylum site at Union; 125,000
for the replacing of the burned build
ings of the state agricultural col lego at
Corvallls, and (15,000 for the expenses
of the Oregon commission at the Omaha
exposition.

Our merchants have agreed to cloce
their places of business at 7 o'clock every
evening for a time.
The Spokane passenger train, going
west, passes this place about 2 o'clock
m., their running time having recent
ly been changed.
Tobey Bros, have sold their business
here to Geo. Biggs, who will continue
the same he-render.
The river has been almost blocked
with ice for a week or more, there be-
tig no crossing except In small boats.
George Garhart. of Lone Rock, came
town the first of the week and bought a
lot of hay for his sheen that he is run
ning on one of Colwell's ranges here.
Range horses are faring very poorly
nst now and many of them must give
up In despair and give their carcasses to
the prior occupants of the country the
coyntet.
We have had 10 Inches of snow for a
week, which Is more than we have had
before for manv years. It niav cause
the stock men some inconvenience, but
will be of much benefit to the wheat
crop in this section of the county.

Woodmen of the World, of which he ia
a member. He returned the 0th inet.
Otho Wick, of Lone Rock, passed
through here last week en route to Fos
sil, where he went to bring home his
mother, who baa been visaing at that
place.
Dr. Shaw, of Fossil, was called here
the 3rd Inst, to attend the baby of Mr.
and Mrs. Herbert Halstvad who was
very ill. At present tho child it im
proving. Mr. Hart Mnnger went to Fossil the
4th inst. with a bobsleigh to get a load
of merchandise for the Lost Valley store.
It Is not often the esse that sleigh can
he used tn advantage between Fossil and
Lost Valley,
Al. Smith, of this place, who, with
Brick Balding, has been hanling wood
to Condon this winter, wa seriously
injured by a rnnaway at Black Butte
last Friday. The team started to run
down the grade, and Al. was thrown
(roiu his seat anil alighted on his head
and shoulders on Die froson ground, lie
waa rendered unconscious lor several
hours, but was getting all right again
at last accounts.
