While there are many proUecaa yet unsolved, regarding the ultimate betterment of the con dition of mankind, which- earnest men and women' hope for, yet al most deepair of seeing accomplish ed; we may all safely conclude that the solution lies in the still wider, dissemination of popular education-, un!UuDered by politic al belief or sectarian dogma. The public school is the founda tion, of the entire educational structure of America, and on the shoulder- of' the public- sehoel teacnera rests a responsibility great er than that borne by president or prelate, senator or soldier; On them devolves the Herculean task of taking charge of half a hundred; more- or' less, young barbarians, whose natures seem to be composed chieSy of mischief and interroga tion points, and training them up to be useful members of society. While the work of the teacher in oar public schools requires worlds of patience, good judgment and tact, it also requires a special training, and a continual delving after new knowledge, together with the best methods of imparting that knowledge to others. For this purpose the Teachers' Institute has been founded, and the teacher who takes advantage of each' yearly . meeting to widen and broaden her store of knowledge- relative to the art instructive, i wise and her pupils are fortunate: All honor to the American school teacher, and especially to those of Gilliam county who have been gathered in Condon for the past week, intent on gathering new ia formation to be imparted to the "youDg ideas" that they are "teaching how to shoot." And of the feminine members of the pro fession at least, it can be said that they are practically useful as well as beautifully ornamental members f society. j Sir. Christman, the Silver Lake merchant who undertook to corner the freighting business between his town and The Dalles by the use of a big . traction engine and a train cf heavy wagons, has met with failure. His big outfit is too cum bersome for Eastern Oregon wagon roads. The- eld fashioned mule skinners and bronco herders who earn a tough living, with their freight outfits are cot IHeTy to pass resolutions of sympathy for Christman, either. With a plentiful supply of pure water for fire protection, domestic use, street sprinkling and irriga tion of lawns and shade trees, Con don can be made one of the pretti est towns in Oregon. The water works is a good ' thing; push it along. Admiral Dewey has been doubly honored. To him has been accord ed the privilege of delivering both the salutatory and the valedictory in the late entertainment which Uncle Sam has put on the boards for the benefit of the Dons.
