Manv deed f valor have been recorded on the pages of our country's hia tory, to the credit of our soldiers and sailors, and new heroes hav been unveiled to the admiring gaze f their countrymen, and the world at large. Dewey, Schley. Hobson Roosevelt, and otkera who might be named, have immortalised them selves in their country's history and have given proof in every in' stance in which they have bee ealled upon to combat the enemy, thai they were the right men i the right place. The work of these men and the work of tha thousands of common soldiers and sailors heroes just the same who followed tum, and made their victories possible, gives added lustre to the already brilliant record of Ameri v . 1 ca s array ana navy, ana gives additional reason for Americans to believe that in fighting for country or for humanity their natiou is in vincible. Oh! the pity of it When the atorjofthe patriotism and hero ism of our troops, who, undaunted by the dangers of the battlefield or the- worse dangers of the fever infested cantp carried their banner to victory isUild. there must also be recited a story of the acts of men high in the official circles of our government, which will bring a blush of shame to the cheek of very America rr. This story, if reports alread published are to be credited, will tell of the appointment, to posi uons oi irust. in mat most im portant branch of the army, th commissary department, of men utterly lacking in military esperi enee or knowledge, who sought for appointment more from mercenary than from patriotic motives. It will tell of the appointment of young meu, to positions as ftafF officers who had no more idea of military tactics than they had of making for themselves an honest living, whose only recommendation was the (act that their fathers, liv ing or dead, were either million aires or "politicians1. with a pnll." It will tell of the mobilization of recruits in camps in which mi- sanitary conditions .were known to exist, when healthful and pleasant locations could have been easily secured in the same neighborhood, the only apparent reason being that the interests of some trans portation company, whose repre sentative had a "pull" on the prop er officials were best conserved bv the, selection of the unhealthful camp site and the consequent dis ease and death of many brave sol dier boys. ' It will tell of sick and wounded ' American soldiers in camp at Santiago dying from Jack of proper medicine and food, both of which could have been secured from our vessels lying in the harbor, bad somebody in au thority possessed either executive a bility or common humanity enough to have detailed a few- lighters to Jand the supplies where they could have been reached by the hospital corps and distributed where most needed. ' There is undoubtedly much in the story of this war for us, as a nation, to feel proud of, but, un fortunately, there is much of which we cannot but feel ashamed. Ohl the pity of it. In some quarters President Mc Kinley is sneered at as a "mere pol itician who always has his ear to the ground to catch the rumble of public sentiment. lhis should not be regarded as an objection. Mr. McKinley deserves credit for desiring to carry out the wishes of the people. If popular 'govern ment is right, .and undoubtedly it is then the public servant who keeps bis ear to the ground is the best 'public servant. To execute the will of the people is the service ho is elected to perform.
