Monday was an ideal day fo a Fourth-of-July, so faras the weath er waa concerned, the meteorolog icil conditions being simply perfect. It was neither too hot nor too cold, the wind behaved splendidly, and the dust kept its plase in a nian m.er that was perfectly charming. The birds sang sweetly, the flags wared proudly, in meinory of a glorious past, and as earnest of a feright future, and the wheat fields waved back their answer in prom ises of a bounteous harvest, and plenty and prosperity. . Admiral Sampson, who. one mis;ht suppose would have had his hands full signing clearance papers for Spanish war vessels boanjd, like McGinty, to tbe "bottom of the sea." found time from his other duties to make a Bhort, Fourth-of-July speech to the American peo ple to tbe effect that he had just finished the pleasant task of anni hilating Cervem's fleet, and this intelligence 6erved to intensify the spirit of patriotism to such an ex tent that, even in Condon, where no celebration was held, the day was one long to be remembered Anvils boomed, firecrackers pop ped and hissed and sputtered, small boys yelled, men cheered, the band played, and in the evening the peo ple felt that the time to dance had arrived, and they danced, many of them into the wee sma' hours of the morning. It Was truly a "glo rious Fourth" fittingly celebrated. not only as the anniversary of American Independence, but also as a splendid endorsement of the valiant work now being accom plished by American arms in be half of suffering Cuba, whose peo ple are destined to soon take their place as a free people among the , nations of the earth. According to recent estimates the population nf Spain In round nnroliera is 18,000,000 people, of which the greater proportion by far are unable to read and write. In fact over 12,000.000 of them ara illiterates. Nearly 10.00(1.000 of them have ro trade or profession and the school attendance i the entire na tion is well under 2.000.003. Of the population 100,000 at professional beg- gurs. In point of 'civilization and pro ifreea Spain Is t a very low ebb. As far as tier credit is concerned it is pracllC' Itlly g"ne. Her 4 per cent Iwnds are q toted at 16, while W 4 per cent bonds sell at 121. Spain's entire capital Is nothing " effrontery .E-. WixrEn-AGF-m for "olabstonk. his M(c ami Pulllc Sn'lcfk,'' bv Thw. W. An experienced writer on this mo mentons qnestion (fivVs the following advice to the fair ae : "Fr a man's hirth, look to his linen and his finjier nnils and oherve the inflections of his voice. For his tastes, study the color of Ma ties, the pattern and hung of his tronaera, his frienda, his rinirs (if any). Fr his propensities, walk around and look carefully at the hack of his head, and remeniher, ifirla, never marry a man whose neck Imlges ever eo little over bU collar. If you want a successful man. see that he has a neat foot ; he will move quicker, get over obstacles faster than a man who fulls over his own toes, and trips np other people with 'em, too. For liis breeding, talk sentiment to biin when he is starving, and ask him to car ry a bandbox down the street when you've just hud a row. To test his tem per tell him bis nose is a little on one side, and you don't like the way his hair grows, ami if that don't fetch him nothina will." Ex. W. A.
