If the newspapers of the state would only awaken to the fact that the election is over, and quit filling their columns week after week with rehashed political dis cussions of the campaign the pub lic and the newspapers would be infinitely better off. The republic an victory cannot be augmented one whit By continual boasting; neither can the defeat of the other fellows be lessened in tha least by kicking or growling about the re sult. In a state of such wonderful natural resources as Oregon enjoys, which are, as yet, practically un developed, there are other and better subjects for us to write and talk about. It may or may not be all right, during a campaign, for the partisan press to revel in the luxury of calling the opposi tion "anarchistic, irresponsible re padiators" on the one hand, or "cold-blooded, heartless coadjutors of the money power octopus" on the other, but now that the cam paign is over we can all better em ploy our lime and talents by writ ing a little less about politics and a little more about Oregon! Let us tell the world more about the soil and the climate, the cattle and the sheep, the wheat and the fruit, the hops, the timber, the mines, and the scores of other re sources and industries which help to make Oregon a great and glori ous commonwealth, and less about how "onery" and. no account our neighbors are who did not vote our ticket In a little less than two years another campaign will bob serenely up and, as a matter of course, w'U have to be attended to in the same old way, but in the meantime, brothers, for the love of heaves and the welfare of fair Ore gon, let us have peace in politics. The question of the annexation of Hawaii has been discussed, pro and con, in and but of congress for months. If the opponents of the measure had valid and suflv-ier1? Teib."ZI!f wuTL.flg tor its defeat prior to the commencement of the present war and before it was known that our army and navy are to have considerable business to transact in the vicinity of the Philippines, with the attendant urgent necessity of a naval station in the Pacific, they can hardly urge the same objections as sufficient at the present time when the actual necessity of our control of the islands is forced upon us by the exigencies of war. It is certain ly to be regretted that members of congress cannot come nearer agree ing on matters of such grave im port. There seems to be many politicians in congress, and while they should, perhaps, not be termed unpatriotic, it is a fact that they allow partisan zeal to blind them to the best interests of the republic. At this time the administration should be upheld and strengthened ; on every hand. If the president and his cabinet make mistakes they should be criticised, but not handi capped in the prosecution of the war. Give President McKinley a chance. Buildup the Union and pull down Spain. That is the idea. The waving fields of growing grain, on Gilliam's fertile hills, make the farmers smiling faces beam with pleasure as they con template, in prospect, the golden coin which fills, next fall, their pockets in plethoric measure. The bands of bleating, lazy sheep on mountain pasture ground, eating grass and growing wool simulta neously, growing wool that finds a market at some 15 cents a pound, fill the sheepman's heart with four teen kinds of glee. The fat, sleek cattle on the range, or in the past ure field, make the cattlemen feel comfortable, act bland, as they figure on the ehekles that their carcasses will yield when placed vp tn the markets of the land. The big fat cattle, woolly sheep and boundless fields f wheat make everybody feel exuberantly funny, and we all unite in thinking that Gilliam's hard to beat as a fat land that Hows with milk and honey, and where every man who rustles is always. sure of plenty to eat and wear and of having money in his pocket with which to pay his war tax and educate his children. Glo rious old Gilliam county! The Globe is in receipt of a circular letter from the secretary of the treasury con taming a lot of information in regard to subscrib ing for the new bonds now being issued, with the request that we give the scheme several dollars worth of free advertising, on the, ground that our readers will be interested in knowing how to buy the pesky things. We are obliged to deny the secretary's request, for the reason that Oregon people are generally less concerned about the purchase of bonds than they are about raising their share of the interest on the ones being bought by Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan, of New York, and as that gentleman is no longer a reader of this- journal we must recommend him to some of his local papers for any informa tion he may need on the subject If the managers of the Portland exposition would kindly indicate, in the letters being sent out to country publishers through the Etate requesting free advertising for the affair, the amount of money they expect to spend with the Ore gonian for like service, it would doubtless make the country jakes feel better. It's a great scheme for Portland. Country papers advertise the show free, country people patronize it for cash, and Portland people divide the "swag." It has worked in this and other states in the past and it will work again. Yes, it's a good scheme, audit will doubtless be a good show. Wanted Some kind of informa tion, reliable preferred, regarding the proposed Arlington-Condon telephone line. Is it to be or not to be, that is the question? Of Interest to Settlers. H. N. Frater.
