Is it not composed of the rank and file of the nation, the plain, com mon people of the republic, who ha?e never been known to shirk duty when the honor or integrity of their county was in danger? Mas it not "the multitude" who ajade William McKinley what he is today, the chief executive of a nation of 70,000,000 of people? Was h not "the multitude" who "ral . Eed 'round the flag" when Sumpter was first fired upon and who will ingly shed their life blood that the Union might be preserved? Was it not "the multitude," armed with flint locks and pitchforks, whoa nw in their might and wrested the thirteen colonies from British rule and British tyranny, and who established this great republic, of which we are all so proud, and which we all so dearly loTe to des ignate- at "the land of the free and the home of the brave," on Fourth of July occasions and in campaign speeches and editorials just be- jreelectio'? i e are not criticising President SL-Kinley. lie today is in need of t&e earnest, physical and moral support of every American, perhaps more so than any man in this na tion Rag been, since Lincoln's in auguration in the dark days of '61 but we do resent the habit, which is becoming so fashionable, in cer tain circles, and among a certain class of newspapers, in these fin de siecle days, of characterizing the great body of the American people, even by implication, as a clamoring Multitude- of jtogot8t9 etc., who know not what they want and whose opinion on any question is aot worthy the consideration of public officials, newspaper editors and other great men. The fact is that the masses of the American people come nearer know ing, in nine cases out of ten, what they want, what the country needs and what justice and honor and right demand, than do the learned statesmen who have been employed by their masters, the people, to look after the details and routine work of the governing business. This fact has been forcibly dem onstrated in the Cuban matter. For more than two yean "the mul titude" has held that the Cuban patriots, who have been making such a heroic struggle for liberty, were entitled to recognition from this government. For more than two years they have stood ready to support any action which the government might take having for its object the freedom of Cuba and the expulsion of the Spaniards from the western hemisphere. The learned statesmen, who, by virtue of power vested in them by "the multitude," have' direct charge of the affairs of state, saw fit, for di vers reasons, to ignore the wishes of the common people in this mat ter aud to adopt a policy of pro crastination and delay, and the result has been that, after the loss of our finest battle-ship and 266 A merican sailors, the country has at last been forced into the very position that "the multitude" be lieved it should take two years ago. Perhaps had the government been pleased to please "the multitude" in tie matter of recognizing the bel li;; -rency of Cuba, the Maine would still be Oyiog the stars and stripes an ! hit bonny sailor boy "iuld j-'irt wr newt-; ajrtrrs. Ecery American who loves the iiig and hates the oppressor is a sovereign, and we are one of those who still believe that the destinies of the republic- will ever be safe in their bands. It has become necessary to have the floor joists under the clerk's office strengthened, the floor hav ing become so weak that there is danger of the heavy safe breaking through. The present building in which the business of Gilliam coun ty is transacted is entirely inade quate, and the eooner the people demand and insist upon & new court house the better for the entire county. It is no more true econo my for the- county to try to "get along" in its present quarters than it would be for a man with a family of 14 children to continue to live in a I0xT2 "shack" simply to save the expense of building a new house- H. h"'&'h.
