THE GOriDQH CLOSE, FRIDAY. JANUARY 28. 1898. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON. tmm The Heppner papers Gaette mid Timet), have just ended lively contest before the Morrow coonty court for of ficial honors, which has finally been de cided in favor of the Gatette, whose worn list of subscribers in the county was at little the largest. The official pa per in that county is a plain worth look ing after, as it is given all of the county printing at regular legal rates, which amounts to perhaps ten times the prices paid in Gilliam county for such work. Judge Bartholomew of Morrow county, one of the ablest judges in the state, in conversation with the writer recently, said he cannot see how any intelligent man can construe the state law any other way than that the official paper, which reaches the largest number of readers, is entitled to all the county printing, and at legal rates as the members of the legislature, who agreed upon a legal rate for advertising, knew what tbey were doing, and that he has no desire to change the state laws. It is different in this county, where the state laws, gov erning such matters, are ignored and the county printing let to the lowest bidder, whether the paper receiving it has any circulation in the county or not. The populists of the state are having a "'hot time" over their leaders, Young and U'Ren. These men are accused by numerous republican papers of having sold out to Simon, Bourne, et al, down at Salem last winter, and now cor respondence pertaining to that subject and giving the whole thing away, has been brought to light and proves that what these papers had to say was correct. Any amount of "white-wash" will not avail to cover op the treachery of these men to their party. They should be dropped like hot bricks. Heppner Ga zette. The Globe cannot afford to descend from ita high standard of journalism to jangle with scrub soreheads whether jealous con tern poraries or individuals. Our read ers prefer the live, local county news in preference to such slum rot, and that is why our list contains the names of all the best element of people in the county. And tbey are all bona fide subscribers, too ; the paper is not obliged to force itself onto people who never ordered it, in order to keep np a list. There is nothing sure but death and taxes, and even death may be a little uncertain, as is illustrated by the case of an Idaho stockraiser, who lived about 100 miles from Shoshone, the nearest place where he could get a coffin. His wife was sick, so near onto death that it was thought certain that she could uot live, so he sent for the coffin. When it arrived, however, the woman was np and attending to her household duties. The rich class constitute 9 per cent of the population. The middle class con stitute 39 per cent of the population. The poor class constitute 52 per cent of the population. The rich class own 71 per ceut of the wealth. The middle class own 26 per cent of the wealth of the country, and the poor class own but 3 per cent of the wealth. These facts are gathered from the United States census. Miss Ella Jones, who was for three years a writer for and compositor on the Cottage Grove Leader, and later on the Kiddle Enterprise and Myrtle Point pa per, now has control of the North Doug las Watchman. We wish this enterpris ing young lady unbounded success. Boseburg Review. The Journal man mast have only imagined that Benton Mires had control of the "Watchman." The tax levy in Linn county this year 2 mills for all purposes. This is said to be the lowest levy of any county in Oregon. The levy is made up as fol lows: State, 3J mills; county, 3 29-30; indigent soldiers, 1-30 ; county schools, 5. The total levy of Marion and Washing ton counties is 15 mills, 3 mills less than last year. Pendleton Herald: About every so often an escaped lunatic gets together enough cash to start a republican paper in opposition to the Portland Oregonian, and for three months imagines be has the Oregonian groggy. Trying to run a Portland republican paper in opposition to the Oregonian is like trying to freeze ice in hades. The Globk editor is agent for all news papers and magazines printed in the United States. Remember this when yon desire to subscribe for any paper. No danger of losing your money in this manner. I have at my ranch near Clem two rarietiea of fine potatoes one purple, with white aromid the eyes that I imported, and is called the "Centen nial;" tbe other I originated here and have named it "The Gold Standard," becaase I don't think it will depreciate in value as a wholesome food. Both kind are snow-white inside and of a most delicious flavor. They are easily grown without cultivation, and the yield is very large. Tbey grow to enormous size, many of them 5 and 6 pounds apiece. I can spare a few of these potatoes for seed at 2c per 100-lb lots, or 2'.,c for smaller lots, at my ranch. Those wanting any of them most order soon, as tbe supply is limited. Z. T. Dodhon.
