the East, which states that times are so
hard hack there that the birds are lay
ing their eggs in last year's nests. They
cannot afford to build new oues.
Goo, Angell, one of tho most reliable
and trustworthy herders in the country,
started this week with Doc Brown's

ty, Ralph May will assist him.
Rob Hendricks, Supt. of the state re
form school at Salem, has resigned that

Croisan of Salem, formerly sheriff of Ma
rion county, has been appointed to take

Miss Rula Fitzwatcr had several bad
fainting spells Monday morning, the re
sult of having a tooth pulled, causing
nervous probation. She was uncon
scious several hours and her folks were
greatly alarmed at her condition for

Misses Mabel and Ethel Halstead re
turned home this week from Blalock,
where the former just closed a term of

It seems that nearly every body in this
county who raixe cattle sold a few to
Mullock and Rhea and delivered them
last week as the band was en route to
the railroad. By the time the drove
reached , Arlington it had swelled to al
most 2000, In consequence many a dol
lar has been put into circulation in thi s
county.
Owing to great despondency over do
mestic troubles, Jos. Whyte, during a
fl of temporary insanity, tried to com
mit suicide on Thursday evening of last
week on the street In front of Mnddock's
hotel, In tho presence of his wife, by
wallowing a quantity of strychnine,
lie was at once given an emetic, which
soon had him in running oner again.
Dr. Uogan has just had rustic put on
his oflice and residence, the inside re
arranged, repapered, painted and fitted
up in elegant style, with a large bay'
' window, lie will have such a ruHh
of patients now that it is likely he will
be obliged to put up a sign at his gate
warning patients aud callers to "keep to
the right, in order to avoid collisions."
Services at the Cong, church next Sun
day, as usual. In the morning, the Lord
willing, the pastor will speak on the
theme, "The New Dress." All are cor
diullv invited to attend. Tho children,
aided by tho older ones, are making elab
orate plans to present to the public a

Dr. J. II. Fravier and family of Mon
mouth expect to spend the month of
July here visiting his brother, 11. N.
Frasscr and family. His health has not
lieen of the best lately and he believes
that a month's sojourn np here will lie
of great benefit to him. He is a first
class dentist, having learned the busi
ness thoroughly in Portland, and will
bring his dental outfit along and com
bine business with pleasure by doing all
that kind of work that comes in his way.
The body of W. S. Ladd, the dead mil
lionaire, which was stolen from the
grave at Portland last week, has been
found, and the four grave robbers -Dun
Migone, Chas. Montgomery, Ed Long
'. and, Wm. Rector, all young men of Ore
gon City, near which pluee they hid the
Ifydf , are all In jail, with long terms In
Ine penitentiary ..staring them In tho
!face, Thev had hoped to get a large re
ward for the return of tho body, hut the
olllcers were too smooth for them.
Walt Wyliuid, tho horse thief, was ac
quitted by a jury at Canyon City hist
week. This seems liko a queer verdict,
when Wylund admitted at his prelimi
nary examination that he stole the horse
and Baked that the other boys unspected
be turned looie, hociiiiHO he didn't want
anyone else to snflt r for his misdeeds.
Wylund also broke jail some time ago
and tried to commit suicide, Isjcause lie
said he preferred death to going to the j
pen agiiin, where be had served a term.
The Indian war dance in the hall here
Friday night waft a very snide affair,
hardly worth going to see, let alone pay
U5e admlsnion. The redxkius must have
"bled" the crowd to the tune of perhaps
fu5, which will keep them in horse race
and firewater money for quite awhile.
As usual, some of them got roaring full
again before, they left town. The city
council ought to oiler a reward for the
apprelieimion of the party who kcIIh
them w hisky, and make an example of
him by hanging, if rio other way.
Our neighbor across the hills feels
greatly elated because that wood notice
by the county does not appear in this
paper. The notice was offered us, but
was refused, because we have no adver
tising space to donate to the county
or anybody else free of charge. The
(ji-oiiK can easily keep its columns full
of live advertisements at regular rates,
and is nut reduced to such straits as a
certain "fossilized" paper not far from
here, that is obliged to fill upon dead ads
and anything it can get, orsuepend pub
lication. That manner of running a pa
per only prostitutes the profession and
Is a disgrace to journalism. No wonder
sucb publishers are always hopelessly
in debt.

Portland lawyer, and a brother-in-law of
Mrs. T. I!. Hoover of Fossil, has been
appointed by Secretary Wilson as a so
cial commissioner of the department of
agriculture to visit Alaska and examine
into the agricultural resources of that
territory and report to congress the ad
viHability of establlHhing an experimen
tal station there, such as are in opera
lion In other slates and territories. Mr.
Killin Is a gold democrat and feels great
ly flattered over the appointment, as the
honorable position was tendered him
without his asking for it. Ho says he is
much pleased, as it will bring him into
a field of work which he will greatly en
joy and take pleasure in performing.

Miss Cummings of Halsey, Linn coun
ty, is visiting her couain, Miss Maud
Oolden, and will remain all summer.
Our new church is going up rapidly.
It is the desire of the Ladies Aid to have
it near enough completed by June 10th
to hold the meeting of the Baptist Aeso
oi tit ion in it, that being the date it com
mences. A social dance was given Wednesday
night here, in honor of Misses Tclith
Phillips and Pearl Shelton and L Thom
as and wife, who expect to leave the lat
ter part of the week for Jordan, Linn
county. Miss Phillip is a niece of A J
Shelton and has made many warm
friends hero who regret her departure,
but all hope she will return again.

it is my duty to myself and friends to
have a word to say in refutation of the
cowardly manner in which that disrepu
table publication, the Fossil Journal,
has been maliciously vilifying and slan
dering me for several years. I am an
old mun and have had more than my
share of trouble and grief, as God knows,
Kven my worst enemies will axree with
me that it is a shame to be thus vilified
hy the Journal "gorilla," whom I have
treated better than did his own people.
When he first came to this country,
friendless and broke, I kept the fellow
from starving by giving him a job of
shoepherding (which, by the way; he
ought to he at yet) and time and again I
befriended him and this is the thanks
1 get. lie could entertain his handful
of readers a great doal more by rilling
ids worthless space with the story of his
own troubles just before coming over
here, and the conditions under which he
left there. It would lie a great deal
more sensational and interesting. Ilia
paper is too obescene and vulgar to be
allowed to circulate through the U. S.
mails or ti go into decent homes, liut
it is a good reflection of bis "Maori"
character and beastly nature, lie's
spoiling for another pick-handling.

ly. Among the hitest to locale here are

Peter Bauernfeind of Douglas paid the
town a visit the first of the week, like
wise J W Blake of Condon. E P Weir
and A 8 Shelton of Mayville were here
also delivering cattle.
C 11 Shurte of Chicago was compelled
to return home last week, owing to sick
ness in ids family. Mehsrs. Mnetl &
Bogue were sent out to attend the busi
ness that he hail started.
If yon wish to sleep in Arlington yon
must wire for a bed, as our hotels are
doing a land oflice business. There is
plenty of business here for another good
hotel. Open one, somebody.
It is reported that the people of The
Dalles are as fidgety as a maggot on a
bcof head, on account of the high water,
which threatens to get dangerously high
again. The river fell four inches at Ar
lington Monday.
Our streets are constantly thronged by
wool teams, cattle and sheep, for ship
ment. This Is doubtless the greatest
shipping point in the , United States for
its size, and it is getting better right
along. Arlington is all right.
Russell Stillwell and wife left this
week for the Okanogan country in Wash
ington, where they will embark in the
cattle raising business. Russell is a rus
tler and we regret to see them go, hut
wish them well in their new home.
The retainer had a bird's eye view of
the great president of the Southern Pa
cific, 0 P Huntington, as he pasted
through town Monday, going east. He
is just an ordinary looking man, even if
he does count his millions by the hun
dreds. Nate Cecil savs he feels satisfied that
his brother Frank is yet alive, and that
he was not frozen to death, as was re
ported some time ago. Nate says the
report was originated by parties who
hoped to be benefitted in a financial way
and took this plan with that end in view.
The world appears to be full of people
who will resort to anything for money.

Messrs Frank H tlston, Neel and Ham
ilton of Lone Hock were among the
number who delivered cattle here to
Matlock and Khca. Oleic is getting to
be quite a center for stock buyers aud
sellers to meet, receive and pay up.
Over 1000 head of cattle passed through
Olest Sunday on the w ay to Arlington.
Messrs Edwards, Weir and Keys all re
ceived here. Moreeattle have gone from
Gilliam county this spring than for the
hint ten years, and still there are lots of
them left.
We are grieved to.have to chronicle a
death by suicide at Olex this week. It
appears to have been deliberate and well
planned, for death was instantaneous.
It was a gruesome sight to those who
saw the awful work of self-destruction,
