The new corporation will build and equip a telephone line from Arlington via Olex, Condon and Mayviile to Fossil. Tbo principal office will lie located at Condon. The capital stock ia (3000, to be divided into sixty shares. W. W. Steiwer, Charlea Mc- Kenxie and Charlea L. Prindle are the stockholders and promoters of the enterprise. Sherman county is again without a saloon. When an attempt was made re cently to have a saloon Miss Maggie Eaton of the W. C. T. U. took her horses and carriage, and with another white- ribboner. drove fifty-live miles In one day and opened forty-live gates, and the next day, taking anoiner woman, orove forty-five miles and opened thirty gates; making one hundred miles in two days, and the opening and closing of seventy live gates. A petition ia being circulated in the northern part of Grant county, asking that a portion of the county Including Haystack, Monument and Hamilton be annexed to Gilliam county, A similar effort was made two years ago but failed, and the Gilliam taxpayers are glad of it. The territory that wants to be annexed to this conntv we understand would prove a blessed riddance to Grant coun ty, aa the principal cause ot tier high taxes ia the many criminal cases that come from that portion of Grant county. We know positively that the object of those people is not to And it more con venient to come to Condon as county seat, but they make open hoasta that at soon as annexed they would begin howl ing for a division of the county, or an other vote on county seat. Let them stay where they are. Gilliam ia large enough the way it ia and does not want them. The development of thia county was retarded for many years by a vicious county seat brawl and the taxpayers do not want any more of it. Outside of half a doxen or so 'agitators," who hope to he benefited by such a change, there are not a doxen taxpayers in Gilliam county who favor annexation. Arlington Items. ' Tt.ern is some fault-finding In regard to the way the road districts have been changed, and the idea of paying out money makes others irrumDle. But some would find fault and grummeii there were no taxes at all and others it there were no roads. As stated Itefore. we favor paying the tax in cash and paying it out on honeetlv-performed la bor on the roads. But our judgment would be to form the county into aliout Ave districts, which would itive each overseer a chance to work each road at th nroiwr time. We believe that the roada can be kept in better repair under the new svttem than tbe old, because it is an indisputable fact that there is a large per cent of the road tax lost under the old svstem. Olex Explosions. There is to be a dance at Olex this Friday night. Cattle feeding is the general order of the day. also night, at present. The Barrett Bros, of Lexington have been doing the county the past week de livering some enlarged pictures, which give general satisfaction. There was a public sale of horses at Olex last Saturday. Six horses of Wm. Boles were sold according to chattel mort gage by Harry Clay and brought 00, be lug knocked ff to Henry Heret. A Nickolson of Gooseberry passed throngh Olex and on down the creek last week looking for work. He talks rather incoherently and several, who met him are rather doubtful as to hia sanity. John Randall arrived from Monmouth last week, where he has been attending school the past winter. Owing to the sickness of his mother, who is now con vulescent, he returned sooner than be bad intended. Mr. Long and C A Danneinan were in thia vicinity last week looking for hogs and cattle to boy. P. lodge gave the ladies of tins place the privilege of using their hall each Wednesday night for one month to hold Lone Rock Rumblings. Jim Williams got home from Pendle ton Monday, where bed ha lieen attend ing court for a couple of weeks. Snow fall to the depth "of ahont 3 inches the first of the week and turned colder than "Klixen." The thermome tor registered 14 below zero Monday night. The first lawsuit for a "coon's sue" was commenced in Justice Crawford's court here last week, by which tbe Bow len store was closed for a couple of days. But the Prof, dug op and returned busi ness, as though nothing bad happened. By the way! the members of the' Ladies Secret Aid Society saytheCor.J made a "miss cue" in calling their or-' ganization the "Oriental Sisters." Well, of course, accidents will happen in the best regulated families. So we take it all back and wish them well in the good work. Last Saturday the boys had a coyote and dog fight in town. The varmint got killed and Cal Robinson got tbe end of one of "hi! thumb! nipped off by a dog, 'Cal went to Heppner immediately, expecting to have a portion of th re mainder amputated, but the doctor thought it would be all right, so be came home Monday. One day last week Julius McKinney came up from Condon and before getting. as far aa Frank Stevens' place got off his horae. Right there ia where he made his mark in the world by lying down in the mud the result of having too much Condon buttermilk aboard, it ia thought. At any rate hie horse got loose from him and it was 2 or 3 days Wore he found him and then the saddle was gone. t m Mayville Mutterlngs. W F Dyer has been laid op with rheumatism for several days. Miss Minnie Frickey is visiting her father and brother on tbe river this week. Rev. Fredenburg of Moro preached at this place Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Mrs. Alice Gager and daughter Nina of Arlington are visiting their relatives here, W J Edwards and family. Quite a number from Mayville and Beecher Flat tendered Mr. and Mra. L A Thomas a pleasant surprise at their home on Badger last Friday evening. A pleasant surprise party was given Mise Maud McConnell Wednesday even ing. Games, taffy-pulling and other amusements were the order of the even ing. At their meeting Thursday night the Rebekaha initiated four new members Mr. and Mrs. M E Weir, Mrs. S F Weir and Mra. A J Shelton. Miss Anna Pal mer of Fossil visited the lodge tbe same evening. , 'Mrs. John Dunn is much better, being able to sit op a little each day. Irene, her oldest child, has been threatened with the fever but at thia writing ia much better and bopea are entartained that she will escape it. On account of the drama at Condon coming off on Feb. 12th, to which number of our people want to attend, the Mayville Aid Society has concluded to postpone their entertainment, which was advertised to come off on the 12th, to Feb. 19. By its provisions the law puts a heavy fine of $500 upon any person who shall refuse an o3er of marriage, that snua to go to the person who makes the proposal.
