' The Dalles Times-Mountaineer j notes and comments as toilows: , The Telegram announces that liry an is a weak man in his own state, and that he cannot even carry Ne braska this fall. As to the consist ency of this statement we have but to refer to the vote bf Nebraska two years ago. By an arrangement of the laws of that state the people have the privilege of expressing their choice for United states sena tor, and in the election of 1894 Bry an received 80,371 votes more than all the other candidates, but the legislature was republican, and John M. Thurston, who received only 1866, was elected to the senate. If the people of Nebraska have not changed their minds in the past two years, Bryan will surley carry the state. The gold reserve in the national treasury has fallen below the if 100. 000,000 limit, and at the rate gold is being drawn out another bond issue will be inevitable before the end of the vear. The money sharks I - ; have the treasury at their mercy since tbev have an abundance of paper money in their possession, and can deplete the reserve at will. Since little of the gold that 's being drawn out is for export it seema that the object is to force another loan. Times-Mountaineer. When tempted to rail at the hard times and complain of poverty, remember the words of Garfield: "Poverty is uncomfortable, as I can testify, but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a your.g man is to be tossed over board and compelled to sink or swim." There is nothing better for a young man than to be compelled to rustle for ' a living. It makes ; strong, self-reliant, capable men the kind our country needs. Judge Stearns, of Portland, has rendered a decision that will be of interest to those who have been divorced and have remarried. Iti is in effect, that no person can le gally marry in the state of Oregon within six months after he or she has deen divorced, but if the mar riage takes place outside the state it is legal. - . . The University of Oregon at Eu gene is rapidly becoming the fore- ,.., t v u i most institution of higher learn- j ing in the Northwest.
