It eeeins incredibis that there should be anybody hot informed on this point, tout apprently there are a , great many, and we answer the question as plainly as we know hows A silver dollar weighs about six teen times as much as a gold dollar. When the ratio was established for the coinage of go! j and silver dol lars it approximately presented the market value of the two metals. An ounce of gold was worth about sixteen times as much as an ounce xf silver. Now an ounce of gold is worth more than thirty times as much as an ounce of silver. ' Under our law whoever owns gold bullion can take it to the mint and have it made into coins without any tist to him. That is free coinage of gold. The gold thus coined is worth a dollar, irrespective of the Btamp, all over the world. The silver men demand that we shall do the same thing for silver without any change of ratio that is to say, that every owner of silver 6hall be permitted to take it to the mint and have every 50 cents' worth of it stamped as a dollar, though it would be worth only its bullion value outside the United States. That is what free coinage at 16 to 1 means. ' The editor of the Chicago Times Herald says: Men are sometimes timid and half-frightened in the Tacttof great luck. t In the dining room of the Planter's hotel I met Mr. Hobart, and extended to him congratlations on his nomination for vice-presidency, which was sure to occur within an hour or two, as the convention was at that moment listening to the nominating speech es. "I feel that I am going to be chosen," said Mr. Hobart, modestly, " but I am willing to confess to you that I half wish I may be defeated. There have been times when I cov eted this honor, but now that it is apparently within my grasp I shrink from it and wish I had never i permitted my name to be used. I hesitate to change my quiet life for the responsibilities of a high position My wife and I are now as happy as .jttjvr tals can be, and I am reluctant i to take this plunge into the sea of! politics and trust to luck for happi- i ness in the future." Mr. Hobart j spoke with feelings and earnestness, showing that he had a deep and manly appreciation of the respon sibility which would de thrust upon, him should the people ratify the choice of the convention. Some how I liked Mr. Hobart better after he had thus epoken. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat suggests this for a McKinley cabi net, and says, though it may seem strange to suggest an Illinois man for secretary of the navy, the gen tleman named was for several years chairman of the naval committee of the bouse, and is today one of the best-informed men in the coun try on naval affairs: Secretary of state Thomas B. Reed of Maine. Secretary of the treasury Mark A. Hanna of Ohio. Secretary of War-Mi ft. Quay of Pennsylvania. Secretary of the ffavy-John R. Thomas of Illinois. Secretary of the interior Julius C. London's new census shows a population of 4,411,271, for inner London, and of 2,750,421 for outer London, a total of 6,167,692. ' This idea of having an inner and an outer enumeration will be a great boon to Chicago, which will now proceed to snuff out the British metropolis Oreponian. I?. SVanderburg 19,292; Jefferson Myers 7,914; N. C. Christensen 1,356; A. S: Ben nett 7,099; W. R. Ellis. 12,617; Martiu Quinn 12,239; H. II. Nor thop 8,807; F. McKercher 775. Total, 89,454. The estimate of five in population to one vote will give 447.270 as the population of the state at the present time. Notice.
