THE CONDON CLOBEJ FRIDAY. JUNE 12.1898. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON. The coronation ceremonies of the Czar of Russia are going on at Mob cow, lasting three weeks and cost ing 17,000,000. Saturday, 6th,there was to be a popular feast, and 1 tables had been spread for 500,000' people, and each person was to get a mug as a souvenir. At an early hour teams loaded with those mugs Mina ij Ka nlain nf Wnilvnalrv VMtUV SUV. V. - J ' ' J near Moscow and one of the attend- ants threw one of the mugs into the crowd. There wan a wild rush made by the populace, and 3600 people, men, women and children were crushed to death and over 4000 others wounded, Ample po lice force had been provided for the event but it was so early in the morning that but few were on the grounds. No Americans or other visitors were killed, it being too early for them. Chicago Record: Grover Cleve land's latest performance has brought joy to the hearts of about 30.000 clerks and office-holders. But think of the sorrow it inflicts upon about ten times as many in dividuals who have been expecting to be office holders. The country will commend President Cleveland's new order. It is in the interest of good government and clean politics. It marks the final triumph of the merit system. We say this in spite of the fact that there are oth er extentions which should be, and will be made in the comparatively near future. But with 85,000 places forever removed from poli tics it is plain enough that the gov ernment is fully and finally com mitted to the merit system. There is no longer any question that the Chicago convention will declare for the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1, and there is little doubt but this issue will win at the November election. A majority of voters in the United States believe that free coinage would better their condi tion, and they will never change their minds until it is tested. Whether or not it will be disastrous is a question, but it cannot be a great deal worse than the present uncertain condition, and possibly the sooner the experiment is tred the better. Times-Mountaineer. The Oregonian bas been victor ious in this campaign, in that it has disrupted the republican party and placed the populists in power. Of course it defeated John H. Mitchell, and that was its desire. Sylvester Pennoyer will be our next United States senator. It can not be otherwise. The St. Louis platform will be for a gold stand ard, and John H. Mitchell cannot Inspire confidence among republi cans on the platform or among democrats off it. Sylvester Pen uoyer will be their choice. Inde pendence Ve6t Side. It Heems strange that the man who will undoubtedly be the re publican nominee for president hasn't the courage to open his mouth on tbe paramount question of the currency. Does McKinley think that tbe American people elect presidents merely to satisfy the ambitions of aspirants? If so, he is a woefully mistaken man. Silence is golden sometinws, and Eossibly McKinley expects to have is constructed in that way. But if be" does be is a coward for beat ing about the bush in such a man ner. Exchange. The Scientific American gives a full page illustration of the Hol land Sub-marine Torpedo Boat, now being constructed by contract for the U. S. Government. It is cigar shaped, length 80 ft. speed 134 knots per hour. The air sup ply is obtained from reservois where it is stored under 2000 lbs. pressure. The men who have been assert ing that Oregon is in favor of the gold standard have only to look at the returns to be convinced of their error.
