the go::do:i clobl Friday, may so, lees. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF OILUAM COUNTY. OREGON. ARE WOMEN BETTER THAN MEM It it tacitly assumed by most of oar modern reformers, that if orn e:i were invested with prvilege of voting, we should speedily witness a great improvement in public morals. Whether this assumption is valid may be safely doubted. The poets declare that women are angels; but we know that, as a matter of fact, they a-e human beings, having the same passions, weaknesses and limitations as their brother men. Whatever depravity attaches to the race, belongs also to them. It may not be particu larly gallant to say so, but it is, nevertheless, the sober truth. That some women are vastly better than most men, we shall at once admit; but it is equally the case that some men picked specimens are vastly better than most women. "Society" women as a class are not much to be preferred to society men. It is beyond dispute as re gards personal purity, sobriety, im pulsive kindness, and self sacrifice, the gentler sex, on the whole, stands a thousand leagues in the lead. But in impartial soundness of judgment, in a keen sense of ex act and balanced justice, and in ca pacity of rational gratitude, it can not lay claim to any p re-em mi -nence. Noris there the slightest ground for supposing that it posess es in superior or equal measure and of those special faculties which are necessary for the wise control of public affairs. No, women are not angels. The homely philosophy of Mrs. Poyser ' contains a deal of truth: "God made them to match the men." They are the other side of our hu manity the other side. This lat ter fact seems on its face to argue that, by divine appointment, their place aid wrk is to supplement that of their brothers, and not to be identical with it. Of all the ab surd notions that were ever enter- " tained in a human brain, none is quite so absurd as the notion that women are somehow defrauded and degraded when they are not put to exactly to the same tasks that occupy the hands and hearts of their husbands and sons. The fact that they are women and not men means something. Nashville Advocate. The New York World declares that had the Roentgen rajs been discovered fifteen years earlier the assassin's bullet in Garfield's body wonld have been accurately located and removed and the wound prop e. tir.t , eny ireateo. vvitn tbe resources of modern antiseptics Garfield would have got well, Arthur would never have been president, the wound in the republican party might have yielded to intelligent political surgery and a great many more or less remote political conse quences might have turned out differently.
