At present it is bo high as to be an obstacle to the proper development of our industries. One of the first questions which intending inves tors ask is, how high are the taxes? When they are told that they run all the way from 3 to 5 per cent, men who have money which they want to place in business property that is property which can be got at and taxed turn their backs and look elsewhere for chances. It is imperative that the attention of the people should be concentra ted upon this great question in some way. We concede the diffi culty of getting at a matter of this kind. It is far easier to talk of economy than to practice it It is the easiest matter in the world to cry out for retrenchment, but not quite so simple to formulate a plan whereby money may be saved with out injury to the public service. Chronicle. From a debate in congress it is learned that the average cost of employes to each member of the house is $939, while for that of each member of the senate is $4483. In other words, the people pay to each member of the house $5000 annu ally, and besides for him, for ser vants hire, 939 additionally; while they pay to each senator $5000 a year salary and in addition, $44S3 to each to cover the wages of those who wait upon these Amencan lords, while they put in most of their time working for corporations, for which they receive 8 till large salaries in addition. Albany Democrat: A peculiar coincidence in connection with the two congress'onal conventions is the fact that Ellis and Herman on the first ballot each lacked 7 of the required number to nominate, and the vote which nominated Ellis, 62 was the required vote to have nom inated Hermann. But Hermann was opposed by Portland bossep, while Ellis was championed by them. A Spanish newspaper editor is so mad at the United States that he proposes to land 12,000 Spanish troops on our coast and carry on a guerilla warfare against our people. , If the Spaniards fight no better than the Mexicans under Santa Anna did in 1847, the sheriff and deputies of any sea coast state could arrest and lock up the entire outfit of invading Spaniards. In Iowa the attempt is being made to influence the legislature to pass a bill prohibiting non-resident aliens from acquiring title to real estate in that state and providing that non-resident heirs who inherit real estate must sell it witnin two years, or it will be forfeited to the state. It has already passed the state senate. There is such a law in Illinois at present. In Ohio and South Carolina a lynched man's heirs may now re cover $5000 from the county in which the lynching occurs. This .is the law, and it is enacted to force peace officers to be more care ful of the lives of their prisoners and to cause the taxpayers to back up the officers in giving every pos sible protection to them. The demand for a reduction in the salaries of all public officials is now being taken np by farmers' or ganizations throughout the country. The state grange demands a cut of 33 per cent in official expenses. Certainly there is no sense or jus tice iu now paying the same sala ries that prevailed when incomes from labor, agriculture and com merce were 50 per cent greater than such incomes are today. Feeders at the public crib should share this reduction with the people who crea ted their positions. Roseburg Re view.
