This article will deal entirely with the childrens' surroundings at school. All of us are unavoidably ' influenced by our surroundings at! all times and everywhere, and as ; children are wore impressible than j cider people, how important that i good influences of all kinds should j encircle them. Too many directors j and teachers are utterly unconcern d as to the appearance and Condi tion of the .school premises and j many an outhouse is a disgrace to j those concerned. If the directors are indifferent about it any good and progressive teacher can get the pupils to assist in cleaning and fix ing up the ecbool yard. During the noontimes of a single week or less, by grading, trimming, repair ing and otherwise the surroundings of many a school could be made doubly convenient and attractive. Now let us step inside the school room. Is the stove rusty or in a tumbledown condition; are any of the window panes out or dirty; are some of the desks out of repair or inconvenietly arranged; are the school maps stacked in the corner or hung in a slovenly manner on I the walls; is the floor dirty and are the children allowed to spit on it. If any one of these or similar im proper conditions exist, the teacher is to blame for it, because it is his duty to have things in different shape. Cheap curtains, pleasingly arranged, pictures, flowers or other ornamental things could be easily obtained and would add greatly to the pleasantness of the room. The insides of some school rooms are as forbidding as a jail and the teacher nearly always cross and disagree able. No wonder the pupils hate Buch a school and would prefer to be auywhere else. Even the mod est iogeabin ean be made attrac tive inside and so can any school room. Many a child coming from a cheerless home loves his school because it is made a pleasant place for him. A webfoot exchange announces it Jh&s no preference as to whom its party shall nominate for office, but when the ticket is named it will . support the same from top to bot tom. Such a paper has no place jn journalism. It is a party organ of the most dangerous sort, and it . is the existence of just such or- gans that encourages corruption in political parties. Whenever aspir ants for office are assured of the support of party organs, regardless of their competency, honesty or in tegrity, bad and designing men will manipulate conventions to se cure nominations, and as a result incompetent and dishonest men are elevated to office. E. O. Ex-Got. Campbell, of Ohio, de sires the democratic party to "com promise" on the silver question in order to carry the presidential elec tion. He proposes that this coun try give notice that after three years it will opeu its mints to the free and unlimited coinage of silver .and he declares that if this notice was given the European nations would tumble over each other in their efforts to enter into an inter national agreement. He advises the democracy to make this origi nal preposition their'-.doctrine in the coming campaign by making .a platform out of it at Chicago cod wyution.
