THE GOHDOIl GLOBE. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON. FRIDAY. FEBUARY 21, I86C. AN OBJECT LESSON. r; The deadlock that exists in the Kentucky legislature in the sena torial contest is an excellent object ledson of that clumsy process we adopt for electing United States senators, but owing to a division on party lines, no election can be af fected without the vote of the pop ulist members, and virtually those two men have in their power to de cide for the people of the entire commonwealth of Kentucky who shall represent them in the Uni ted States Senate. That is, two men can cast the vote of the entire state. This state of affairs should be a sufficient argument in favor of electing senators by direct vote - Speaking of the deadlock in Ken tucky the other day Senator Turpie o'' Indiana, in a speech before the senate, said: . ''But whatever else may result from this deadlock in the Kentucky legislature, it should teach the peo- pie of the United States that the time has come when there should a 1 ... . be adopted an amendment to our . national constitution giving into the bands of the people the election of United States senators, that the 'ballot of opinion,' unbought and ' unawed, may settle the question of election to the United States sena tor." Bids for the new issue of govern ment bonds aggregating more than $600,000,000 at prices ranging from 11,09 to $1.50 were opened a few days ago. The result is astonish ing, and goes to show that the peo ple have not lost confidence in the nation's ability to pay and - that there are untold millious of money lying idle in the country, watching ' every opportunity for safe and profitable investment. How much better would it be were there no - such opportunities for tying up " capital; it would then be forced in to legitimate business channels and become a blessing instead of a bur den. Our coast cities are not defended by great fortifications, but the na tion who sends a shell whistling in to one of them will pay a billion or two for the whistle. Globe Demo crat.. .,. . .
