The immi gration societies in the South were never before so alert as now. They want immigrants. We repeat, if the rich acres of the West are to be tilled the people of the West will have to do better work than they have been doing of late. Except ing California and Utah the states of the West, as far as regards en couragine immigration by the best methods, have been taking a pro found sleep. Millions of acres in the Dakotas, in Utah, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon are yet unbroken, and will remain so un less those states bestir themselves. A great immigration convention was recently held at Seattle, Wash., and it resolved to ask the state to appropriate $25,000 from the state fund, and to call on all commer cial bodies for generous contribu tions. If wisely expended such money will do much good. The people of the middle West and East have very imperfect ideas of the great West and will eagerly read facts regarding it. The Dawson Daily News Bays that a preacher in North Georgia worth 112,000 permits his mother to live in the county poorhouse, and adds that the church that would fellowship such a man, the audience that would listen to such a preacher, and the society that would tolerate him, deserve to be turned over to the tender mercies of the Sandwich cannibals, while the parson himself ought to be placed in the center of a ten-acre field, covered knee-deep in powder, and a red-hot bar of iron placed in his hands with the right to hold or drop it, whichever he preferred. Kansas City Star. The Louisville Courier-Journal Bays: One trouble following a manifestation of the United States' determination to maintain the Monroe doctrine is the bellicose ef fect on the republics of South America. JSver since tne message of the president little Venezuela has been piruetting around like a bantam rooster "spilin' for a fight." All the dispatches from that quar ter indicate that Venezuela is now anxious to fight anybody or any thing, and if she does not cool down it may be that Uncle Sam will have to spank ber, as well as thrash John Bull. The Inter Ocean believes that the United States should leave no just method unused to stop the persecution of Armenians in Tur key. Just the same, it believes we owe a duty to the suffering Cubans almost in Bight of our southern shore. The United States is a na tion great enough and with power enough to be felt in all such con tests. If such is 'jingoism" let us have more ot it. A nation is not much of a nation, just as a man is not much of a man, when he stands by and sees a bully maltreating and killing the helpless. Respect to the Dead. ! Cati.k 11 all. The following from the Spokane Chronicle serves as a good hint to par ents in other towns who are careless enough to allow their children to run at large: It is a melancholy fact, but anyone who walks through the business streets of thl8 city almost any afternoon or even ing is forced to the conclusion that there are two or three hundred parents in this city who are not fit to be entrusted with the training and education of a yearling calf. Perhaps one should be thankful that the proportion of such parents Is smaller in Spokane than in most cities; but that is no excuse. Parents who care so little for their children as to al low them to ran wild in the streets, fill ing the air with profanity and obscene language, and making life a burden for passers-by are not only wronging tbe public and grevionsly wronging the lit tle folks for which perhaps they care nothing but it is a satisfaction to state that they are also laying up large stocks of trouble for their own future use. Mr. Frank Welch, a Texan who is' now in Washington, said: "There is hardly any doubt of a successful combine between the Texas republicans and populists, and their combined forces ought to be able to knock out the demo crats, as the present governor was only elected by a plurality. It has been agreed that the populists shall name the entire state ticket and that the presidential electors and representatives in congress shall be equally divided with the republicans. Justice and public decency demand that this case be not opened again There is no doubt of his guilt and he should pay the penalty of the law.
