The London Globe publishes a severe article on the invitation of the United States Venezuela com mission to the governments of Great Britain and venezula to sub mit to the com mission all evidence in their posteriori which is likely to further the work of the investi gation, and inviting the two gov ernments to be represented be fore it by attorneys without preju dice to either claims, and then Bays: "Great Britain will not allow this monstrous claim to determine the territory of a British colony within its jurisdiction. No power would admit it except at the close of a long and disastrous war. Were such a demand to be made by any other power, our only re ply would be to hand its ambassa dor his passports and mobilize the fleet," . Is it that the British government has such great affection for thellni ted States that it is bo considerate? Are the ties of friendship so strorg that this is the only government on earth from which it would tolerate such impudence? Or do the haughty Britishers remember the events of 1776 and 1812, and fear that the events of those times may be re-enacted if the American am bassador were given his passport? Whichever it is, it is pleasing to note that England does not care to resort to any overt acts that would terminate in an open rupture be tween the two nations, and is will ing that the differences be settled by peaceable means. THE MONROE DOCTRINE. From President Monroe'a Meswage to Congress in December, 1823. We owe, therefore, it to candor and to the amicable relations ex isting between the United States and the allied powers to declare that we should consider any at tempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety. With the exist ing colonies or dependencies of any European power we have not in terfered and shall not interfere, but with the governments who have de clared their independence and maintained it, and whose indepen dence we have, on great considera tion and just principles, acknowl edged, we could not view an inter position for the purpose of oppress ing them or controlling in any oth er manner their destiny by any European power in any other light than as a manifestation of unfriend ly disposition toward the United States. James Monroe. Every school boy and girl Bhould be able to repeat the "Monroe Doc trine." It is destined to play no small part in the future of our country, as may be seen at present. Any boy or girl who is not famil iar with it should learn it at once. Not to know the "Monroe Doctrine" is inexcusable ignorance. There is a new species of corn, which is being cultivated with suc cess io the arid regions of the east ern slopeB of the Rocky mountains, and may prove highly important to the whole arid region of the United States. It is called Kaffir corn, because it had its origin in the Kaffir country of South Africa, and will grow well in localities where wheat and ordinary corn would die of drought. Last year great quantities of this new corn were planted in the dry regions of Western Kansas and Oklahoma. Though the season was an unusual ly dry one, the crops were good. We would be glad to hear of exper iments with this corn in Eastern Oregon, where no doubt it can be grown successfully, Gov. Lord has received a dis patch from the Secretary of War, asking the number of men in this state who are immediately availa ble for military service. This undoubtedly shows that the feeling is strong in the East regarding the possibility of the United States oc cupying Cuba in the event of the confirmation of the report of the sale by Spain of the inland of En gland. The Governor has tele graphed that Oregon's national guard contains nearly 2,000 men who could be mobilized at Portland within 48 hours. In 1891 the legislature passed a law making it a crime for one to point a gun, whether loaded or not, at another. The act is a wise one and is directed at that class of thoughtless people who, after they have taken human life, are ready to exclaim that they did not know it was loaded. At the late term of the circuit court for Jackson coun ty one El wood Coy le fell a victim to this law. He was fined if 50 and j coata. Congressman Culbertson, of Tex-! as, is one of the greatest criminal lawyers in the United States. It i is said that he has defended 110 ! men indicted for murder in the first degree and saved the necks of j every one of them. The old gen tleman is said to be a man of, splendid ability but he has stood j in the back ground in order to ad- j vance the political interests of his; sons, one of whom is governor of i Texas and the other U. S. district I attorney of the eastern district of the same state. The newspaper reporters and correspondents have, at least to their own satisfaction arranged the marriage of Ex President Harrison and Mrs. Diramick. They should now stand back and give the ex president and Mrs. Dimmick a chance. Sensible Advice. Don't send your children off to high schools or colleges until you are sure that they can Write a good legible hand. Spell all the words they know how to use. Speak and write good English. Write a good social letter. Add a column of figures rapidly. Make out an ordinary account. Deduct 16j percent from the face of it. Receipt it when paid. Write an ordinary receipt. Write an advertisement for the local paper. Write an ordinary promisory note. Reckon the interest or discount on it for days, months, or years. Draw an ordinary check. Take it to the proper place in a bank to get the cash. Make neat and correct entries in day book and ledger. Tell the number of yards of carpet re quired for your parlor. Measure a pile of lumberin yonr shed. Tel) the number of bushels' of wheat in your largest bin, and the value at currents rates. Tell something about the great au thors and statesmen of the present day. If they can do all this, and more, it is likely they have sufficient education to make their own way in tbe world. If yon have more money to throw away upon them, all well an "good give them higher English, give them literature, give them mathematics, give them sci ence and if theyare very anxious abontit give them Latin and Greek, or what ever the course tbey intend pursuing in life demands.
