THE CODOOfj GLOBE! The official paper of cilliam county. oregon. FRIDAY, JANUARY lO, 1896. IF WAR MUST BE, By All Means Let It Be With Britain, the Bully of the World. loMlnville Courier-JonmiU. There will be no back-down on the part of the United States. The principle of American independence of monarchical ajorestiion is one which will be maintained as long aa the republic of the United States ex ists. Salisbury may blunter that it is a principle which is not ac cepted among the laws of nations. That is a question which is not worth an argument. It is a prin ciple proclaimed as a law of this na tion, which stands ready to enforce its acceptance by any nation that dares attempt to violate it. If the government which Salisbury repre sents wishes to try that issue, it can certainly have its wish by per sisting in its present course should our commission find that British claims in Venezuela are unjust. And if it is necessary at this late day to go to war to vindicate the Monroe doctrine, by all means let that war be with Great Britain. Such a war would settle move things than the Monroe doctrine. It would sweep this grasping power off this continent. & it is bound to be swept sooner or later. It would administer a drubbing to the bully of the world of which he is Sadly itt need, and it would give other na tions which have suffered so much at his brutal and sordid hat.ds a chance to even up the blackest score that blot history's record of power and lust. But aside from all this aside, from the irresistible spirit with . which our people would rise up to repel an assault upon the vital principle of American institutions; aside from the conclusive character of the settlement of all question at issue in-a war with an antagonist eo formidable as Great Britain the people of the United States, if they are to have a war, would rath er tight with Great Britain than any other power. She is our his toric and irreconcilable enemy. She has never forgiven us for as serting our independence of her greedy domination. She is still sore from the lickings we have giv en her. She is, more the.n all oth er nations, envious of our growth ana resenliui oi our rivalry. ttie is the most arrogant in her patron age, the most oflent-ive in her criti cism. Moreover, she is the most odious to Americans everywhere as the one great "civilized" govern ment that has built up its power and heaped up its riches by tramp ling under foot those principles of humanity and liberty dearest to the American heart. Bully, brag gart, freebooter, she feeds upon the weak, as the ravenous brute she has chosen as her emblem, and her vast dominion today is the most shameful monument to the suprem acy of might over right. The rank and file of the people of this coun try would rather thrash the devil out of Great Britain than any oth er nation, because they believe there is more of the devil in Great Britain than in any other nation. Speaking for one part of the country the people of the South ern states the Courier-Journal is free to say that they would flock to the nag that hung denauce to John liUll, as they never Hocked to their i own stars and bars. ith all the impetuous ardor of their nature, they would welcome such a war nun nsk no hfifpr hnnn tbnn lha nrivileLreof fuhtinp- in it. John Bull knows when he meets a fceman, "his size," and he is not going about picking quarrels with that sort of belligerents. A good deal has been said in Europe about our lack of a navy. Vet Europe must remember that we can build a navy if we want to do so. If Uncle Bam chooses to spend a thousand million dollars on a na vy and build the biggest in the world he can do so. He could bor row the money in a week. and even then his public debt would be 0, a little over nail as large as that of Great Britain. Only we are a peace loving nation and d(i not care to build such a navy. But our critics must not forget that we always have the ability to do it. In the ability of our men to march and to fight -we have the same corfider.ee. They have proved it often enough. James W.
