THE CONDON GLOBE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER. 13, 1898. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM . ... COUNTYi -OREOON. If it true, a alleged by a New York paper, that, "there are thous ands of horses on the Oregon ranges which cannotbe sold at any price," it would be of interest to the men who owns the animals to read the last report from the United States consul at Brunswick, Germany. He states that in the large cities of Germany the cosumption of horse meat is almost as great aB that of beef or mutton, and in the smaller cities, where some prejudice exists against meat of this character, the consumption is less, but growing daily. The butehers are paying $35 a head for worn-out horses, and this is the feature of the report that should be of especial interest to the horse-breeders of Oregon. If shipped on the hoof from America, horses are admitted to Germany at a tariff of $3.5 a bead, and no question as to the purity of the meat is raised. Allowing $4.75 for duty and $10 per head for trans portation, it would leave to the shipper a profit of $20.25 on each animal shipped. The matter is certainly deserving of some atten tion from the American breeders who cannot sell their surplus stock at any price in this country. The question of too high price for school books is being agitated all over the country. The Chica go Board 'of Education has just discovered that the school children of that city are paying $50,000 a year more for their text books than is paid by the pupils of St. Loirs or Omaha. The average in St. Louis per pupil is 37 cents, in Omaha 28 cents, in Kansas City 53 cents and iu Chicago 70 cents. The low cost in the first two cities is explained by the fact that the books are deliver ed directly by the publishers at wholesale rates, and they are dis tributed by the school department. This cuts off 40 per cent which the jobber and the retail dealer absorbs. There is no reason why school children should not receive the benefit of this cut.' In the same high school pupils and college stu dents should be given by publish ers the same discount when they club togetnerand order as many as twenty-five volumes. Text books Are entirely too dear in this country, compared with the cost of other books. Circuit Court Docket. Sept. term, '95. LAW. Henry Heppner vs A J Cochran. D 8 Sprinkle vs Jos Frizzell.
