If order s received on taxes by the sheriff after the date prescribed by statute are offered in the settlement it is optional with the court whether the sheriff be given credit for them or not. Thus, the sheriff in accepting orders on taxes after the hrst Monday in April takes chances of being left with a lot of county orders in his hands, should the county court conclude to strictly follow the law. fecting what Mills bill. Senator J. A. Smith of Sherman, one of the ablest and most con scientious members of the recent session of thelegislature.introduced and secured the passage through both houses of a bill regulating railway traffic between Celilo and The Dalles. It causes the O. R. & N. tracks to be used as a portage at a maximum rate for transporta tion, whenever any person or per sons, company or corporations shall grade and furnish with ties with out cost to the 0. R. & N. a switch, siding or incline from the line of the 0. It. & N. to the water's edge at Celilo, and also at The Dalles. It is the first great step towards an open river, and proposes to do this without cost to the state. Mr. Smith is today, and always has been, a democrat. If the state of Oregon had more public servants of the kind Mr. Smith has proved himself to be, there would be but little need of so much partisanship. Ileppner Gazette. Lewiston Teller: A warning to all county division advocates is to be found in the history of the Al turas county division. Alturas county was first divided and Logan county created. This came about after a bitter fight and the division of property and the proportion ment of debts increased the bitter ness. In the first session of the legislature a bill was passed creat ing Alta and Lincoln counties out of the old territory, but this was annulled in the courts after a long struggle. Now at the present ses sion comes a bill to consolidate Alturas and Logan counties because they alone are unable to stand the expente of county government. The new county divisionists would do well to study the history of the example here given before rushing into evils that, they know not of. In this week's San Francisco Examiner is an article on the sub ject of corsets, which is illustrated by a picture of two skeletons, one of a girl who wore corsets and the other of a girl who wore them not. It can be seen at a glance that the skeleton of the latter is much the finer looking. How the two girls compared when the skeletons were still clothed with flesh, of course, we do not know; but any young man, or at least any sensible young man, who desires to marry for the purpose ot keeping his wife's skele ton for exhibition, will do well to choose a girl whose waist has never been compressed by anything more staying than the masculine aria. The Arizona legislature has de clared in -favor of woman suffrage and it looks as if California would do likewise. What did the legislature do? Why, it elected McBride, within forty days, too, at a cost of not less than $100,000 to the neonle of the state of Oregon. The Oreeonian sarcasticallv re marks that "banks and railroads, after a while, will be regarded as necessary in Oregon, and men will cease to try to destroy them. Representative Clarence Cole of roriiand has 6ued the Oregonian for $25,000 damages for calling him a "stinkard" and other pet names the result of his refusing to sup port Dolph for senator. Our "old girl" Miss Anna Gould was married in New York Monday to Count Paul Ernest Boniface de Castellane, and they have already sailed for Paris, where they will reside, uood byel A swelled head is as dangerous to nations as to individuals. This tip is extended to the emperor of Japan without charge, whether he renews his subscription to the Globe or not. Oregon had 117 clerks for 90 legislators while Washington had less than 50 clerks for 112 legisla tors and only 68 legislative em ployes, all told. Ex. The sheriff of Cook county, 111.. (Chicago) gets 25 cents a day for feeding each Drisoner under hi charge, and he is said to make $50,- wu a year out of it. The cost of running the govern ment under Jefferson was 60 cents per capita.
