"Dealing in human hair is a peculiar business, ' said the proprietor of a wig making establishment to a reporter, "People do not understand the ins and outs of a business that must on its face seem so simple. "The mere matter of obtaining hair with "which to make wigs, switches and other hairwork to adorn heads poorly favored by nature seems easy, but it is aot so. We have to exercise the greatest care in buying hair, it being absolutely necessary to know from what source it has been obtained. A great deal of hair comes from the ash barrels and garbage piles. Yon can see that material of this kind would not be at all desirable, yet people often wonder why one wig costs four times as much as another when in appearance both are the same. "The source from which the hair is obtained has a great deal to do in deter mining the price of the goods. If hair has ben cut form a fever patient, the price asked is considerably lower than if it had been cut from the head of a healthy person. Hair retains disease germs longer than anything else. That this is appreciated is shown by the fact that even after hair found in miner-tain places has been put through the severe cleansing process to which all the ma terial used is subjected, still it does not command the same price as the healthy article. One would think that this proc . ess would kill all disease germs, but it does not seem to increase the value, of such hair. "Wnen hair is collected, it is thrown into vats of boiling water, where it is left to boil for a considerable time. After that it is put through a chemical preparation, and then, after being combed out and sorted in sizes, it is laid away for a year. We never use any hair that has not been treated at least a year. Each box is marked with the date on which the hair was treated, the place from which it came, eta, so that we have a full history of every bit of hair in stock. " "We meet some peculiar people in our business. Yon would soon be con vinced that women cannot claim exclu sive title to vanity. We find men who are hairless more difficult to please than women. They insist upon having this bald spot covered jnst so, and their way invariably happens to be the only way in which it cannot be fixed. " Pitts burg Dispatch. A Hone With a Mustache. "Look dar, BilL See dat horse wid a mustache!" This explanation from one street gam in to another attracted the attention of a reporter and a few friends with bins who were conversing on the cornea. Looking in the direction of the boys, he discovered that Letter Carrier Thomas Brown' had driven up his little wagon to collect the mail from the box. At tached to it was a small sized sorrel horse, which had, sure enough, an gant mustache about 2 inches long and curled in a manner which wonld exuito the envy of any dude. From Mr. Brown it was learned that the horse was about 6 years old, and that he purchased him from a negro. The negro raise him from a colt, and in early life he com menced sporting his mustache. To re lieve himself of the bother of answer ing questions, the colored man had tap the whiskers trimmed, but Me. Brown,, since he became possessed of the animal, had permitted them to prow. HE TELLS A REMARKABLE STORY OF HIS LIFE. Came to Detroit About Forty Tears Ago Levi Klsey's Experience Worthy Serious Attention. From the Detroit Evening News.) Away oat Gratiot avenue, far from the din and turmoil of the business center, there are many attractive homes. The intersecting streets are wide, clean and shaded by large leaf-covered trees, and the people you meet are typical of in dustry, economy and honest toil. There are many pretty residences, bat none more mviung ju ius iienuiesB wju uvuia- like comfort than tnat ot Mr. .Levi ri eey, the . well-known builder and con tractor, at 74 Moran street, just off Gra tiot. Mr. Elsey is an old resident of Detroit, having moved here about forty years ago. He has erected hundreds ot houses in different parts of the city, and points with pride to such bandings as the Newberry & McMullan and Cam paw blocks, in which be displayed his ability as a superintendent. 1 have seen Detroit grow irom vu lage to a city," he observed yesterday in conversation with the writer, "and I don't think there are many towns in i America to-day equal to it in point ot beauty. I know almost everybody in the city, and an incident which recently happened in my life has interested all my friends. ' " It is now about eight years ago since I was stricken down with my first case ot illness. One cold, blustering day 1 was down town, and through my natural carelessness at that time I permitted my self to get chilled right through. When I arrived home that evening I felt a se rious pain in my left leg. I bathed it that night, bat by morning X toand it uaa grown worse, in iact, it waa bo se rious that I sent for my family physi cian, and he informed me that I was suffering from varicose veins. My leg swelled up to doable its natural size, ana the pain increased in volume. The ag ony was simply awful. I was laid up, and never left my bed for eight weeks. At times I felt as ' though I would grow frantic with pain. My leg was bandaged, and was propped up in the bed at an angle of 30 degrees in order to keep the blood from flowing to my extremities. " I had several doctors attending me, but I believe my own judgment helped me better than theirs. After a siege of two months I could move around : still I was on the sick list and had to doctor myself for years. I was never really cared, and suffered any amount of an guish. "About two years ago I noticed an ar ticle in the Evening Newi about my friend, Mr. Northrup, the Woodward avenne merchant. In an interview with him he stated that he had used Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People and that they cored him. I knew him very well.having built his house out Woodward avenue, and I thought I would follow his suggestion. I must confess I did so with marvelous success. From the time I be gan to take the Pink Pills I felt myself growing to be a new man. They acted on me like a magical stimulant. The pain departed, and I soon was as strong and healthy as ever. Before trying the Pink Pills I had used any amount of other medicine without any noticeable benefit. Bat the Pills cared me, and I was myself again. ; " When a person finds himself relieved and enjoying health he is apt to expose himself again to another attack of ill ness. Some three months ago I stopped taking the Pink rule, and Irom the day I did so I noticed a change in my con dition. A short time since I renewed my habit of taking them with the same beneficial results which met me formerly. I am again nearly as strong as ever, al though lam a man about 66 years of age. l tell yon, sir, the rink nils are a most wonderful medicine and if they do as well in other cases as they did in mine tbey are the best in the world. I freely recomrcend them to any sufferer." Dr. Williams' Pink Pills contain, in a condensed form, ail the elements neces sary to give new life and richness to the blood and restore shattered nerves. They are an unfailing specific for each diseases as locomotor ataxia, partial paralysis, St Vitas' dance, sciatica, neuralgia, rheumatism, nervous headache, the after effect of la grippe, palpitation of the neart, pale and sallow complexions, an forms of weakness either in male or female. Pink Pills are sold by all deal ers, or will be sent post paid on receipt of price (60 cents a box, or six boxes for $2.60 they are never sold in bulk or by the 100) by addressing Dr. Williams' Medicine Co., Schenectady, N. OUR MINISTER TO CHINA. Colonel Charles Denby and Lrgntlvn Lift In the City of resin. Now that Japan has knocked the Ko rean chip off the shoulder of China, and the mikado and tho emperor are settling their differences witn snot ana sbeu, Colo nel Charles Uonby, united Estates minis tor to China, becomes a personage of more than ordinary interest, although he is absent from China on a vacation. Colo nel Denby was born In Botetourt county. Va., about 08 years ago, and was educated at Georgetown college, where he took three medals for the high merit of his work, and at the Virginia military institute. In 1888 he removed to Kvansville, Ind., where be wrote lor a newspaper and stud led law. lie was admitted to the bar and In 1860 was sent to the legislature. Ho was surveyor of tho port of Evansvlllo un der President Buchanan, and although a Virginian espoused the cause ot the Un ion when the war began, lie served gal lantly as lieutenant colonel of the Forty- second regiment, Indiana volunteers, and as colonel of tho Eighteenth regiment, and was twice wounded. In 1863 he resigned and for 89 years devoted himself to the CHARLES DENBY, MINISTER TO CniNA. practice of law. In 1885 he was appointed minister to China and has held the office ever since, despite changing administra tions, a fact doubtless due to the rejection by China of ex-Senator Blair of New Hampshire, who was nominated as minis ter by Presldont Harrison. " In 1858 Colonel Denby married a daugh ter of ex-United States Senator J. N. Fitch of Logansport, Ind. He is a very able lawyer, speaks French and Spanish fluently and knows what a Chinese luun dry ticket calls for every time. Peking is said to be one of the inexpensive courts for an American diplomat. The minister has a house and five acres of ground, the rent for which is paid by Uncle Sam. There are also an office building and an additional house for his guests, a gate keeper in livery and an American eagle over the door of the office. The legation is on the street known to the cltUons of Peking as that of the "Subject Nations, and all Chinese nobles think the minister a barbarian. He never sees the emperor and relies for his society upon the Euro peans who live in Peking. TWO GIRL GLOBE GIRDLERS. Studying- the World's Women, They Believe the Least Emancipated the Happiest. Two pretty Scotch lassies, Miss F. Marie Imandt and Miss Bessie Maxwell, are now touring the world endeavoring to learn all about that woman's work which the poet says is never done, while the work of man only lasts from sun to sun. They start ed from -Dundee last February to girdle the globe and tell the readers of a Dundee paper how unemanclpated woman the world around was getting on. . They at last arrived in the united States and are busily engaged in getting "soaked with American impressions," as Miss Imandt puts it From Dundee the bonny Scotch investi gators first went to London, which they think is about the best field for missionary work among women that they have yet seen, with the possible exception of the back streets of their own Dundee. From England the girls went to France, Italy, Egypt, Arabia, India, China and Japan. The European women, Miss Imandt says, are just beginning to wake up and ask questions, wonder '-where they are at" and what all this talk about emaclpated and unemanclpated woman means. This fair Scotch investigator has become convinced that the happiest woman on earth is the heretofore pitied woman of the east the woman who Is a mere doll and plaything for man's amusement, and who is the direct opposite of our end of the century woman. The principal reason why the eastern woman is happier than her more enlightened sister, according to Miss Imandt, is because she is not ruined and wrinkled by a mad quest of fashion MISS IMANDT. MISS MAXWELL. able garments. She Is not bothered by layers of clothes, changes of fashion and monthly statements from dry goods stores. She wears one garment a year, and her entire wardrobe ranges In size from a sim ple loin cloth In some countries to a single straight piece of cloth wound around her body in others. The women of Cairo have nothing in the world to do but gaze in their mirrors, eat sweetmeats and endeavor to look pretty. In India the Scotch girls were again impressed with the happy condition of the women in harems. The prettiest woman they have yet seen on their globe girdling tour was a dark eyed Farsee trlrl of 15, who was sweet voiced and lovely and much happier than the western woman, with her many cares, her ambition to be well dressed, her worrisome servants and her disfiguring wrinkles. In China the Scotch girls learned that women are not considered the equals of their husbands, and in Japan they became convinced that the Japanese musmee had no morals whatever. "But," says Miss Imandt, "the Japanese woman doesn't know she is doing wrong and ought to burn for it, as she might possibly be taught by gentle people who sometimes leach those things." They never Irritate the skin, but always have a soothing effect They are useful in case of any local pain, and as a rule will bring immediate relief. If they do not, it is because the trouble has been allowed to become so serious that no external remedy will reach it, and the chances are that any treatment will fail.
