Charley Royse closed a successful term of school near Mnyville this week, and returned to his home at Gooseberry. lie gave such excellent satisfaction that all want hitu to return and teach the next term, which he will probably con sent to do. A banker and capitalist of Kelso, Wn., has written several parties here that he 411l visit Condon soon with a view to es tablishing a bank here if the outlook nr.its hitu. We ventnre the assertion that Condon has the best opening in the state for a bank. The legislature got down to business Monday. On Tuesday renator Htoiwer offered resolution extending the time for making final proof on forfeited rail road lands to Bept. 29, 189.1, and that the secretary telegraph the resolution to Oregon's representatives in Washington. It was amended so as to read Jan. 1, 1894, and adopted. Grange Resolutions. The following resolutions were adopted by the Uilllam County Council at Fossil, Oregon, on Jan. 7, 1803: Resolved that the Franking Sys tem be abolished, and instead thereof the Congressional Record be sent to ev ery poBtollke and posted in a conspicu ous place for the benefit of the public. We are oposed to appropriating any more money for the Oregon Militia, and recommend tlmt they be disbanded. We ask thut our laws bo so auieuded as to allow women the privilege of sign ing petitions for liquor license, also re f monstrances against the same. ' We are in favor of free and unlimited coinago of silver, and tho election of U. 8. senators by a direct vote of the peo ple. ' W, J. Edwakds, President. Mamy Edelman, Secretary. ' Lone Rock Rumblings. T. F. Pullen moved his family to town Tuesday, so as to be near school. Billy Brown has traded oft his buck board, and most every day now ho can be seen riding round ou hissulkey plow. Our farmers are scraping the rust off their old plows, hunting clevises, etc., preparatory to turning over the dark rich loam hereabouts. Sheep all over the country are in ex cellent condition,! but there are a great many poor horses and cattle, and should a hard spell of weather set in, many of them w ill die. Our Sunday School literature was de layed last week, and Sunday we all rus tled np our bibles (that is, thoxo who keep such articles) and "went after" the lesson in the old-fashioned style; and some pronounced it the best meeting of the year. ' ; Mr. Wm. White paused here Tuesday with the remains of his deceased wife, which will be buried on his father's place at Pa per Hack, Much sympathy is felt for Mr. White, as he has three email children to care for, and to such, another's place can scarcely be filled. Another real estate dealt Ed Wine land traded an old horse and an old hack to John E Johnson for an old horse and , a lot in our burg. We hope Mr. Wine- land will improve the property and not allow it to go to rack and be used for a gambling dive, like it has been of late. A series of revival meetings will com mence at this place dcxt Sunday. All the old chronic free-thinkers, etc. are expected to be present; and it is further , expected that they will got the carbon i r Wclcs knocked off of them, so their mako op will be in a healthier state for the future. . Don't know if we will have any Jour nal this week or not; one of the Journal men did not get home until Tuesday night. Several of the parties who went to EI- lensburg as witnesses in the bank rob ber ease have returned home, the trial having been postponed until Jan. 30th. They are pretty apt to return at that time, as they were compelled to give bonds for their appearance. , Married Jan. 8, 1803, at the residence of E. Whitehead at Fossil, Mr. John H. YantistoMiss Nellie Kennedy, Squire Donaldson officiating. Only a few-of the immediate friends and relatives of the contracting parties were present. About 9 o'clock the happy young couple were serenaded by the Fossil brass band, whd together with the spectators were invi ted in and treated to some delicious pie, cake and nuts. Thev have the best wishes of their numerous friends. This section is settling up at a surpris ing rate with new-comers. Four births within the last few days! On Jan. 7th to the wife of Jas. Thompson, a girl; to the wives of Simon Starr, Win. GrilBths and J. C. Kogor each a child, but we did not learn the dates or sex. It seems sin gular that the drouths and hard times does not effect this important industry; if anything it makes it all the more brisk. 1et the good w ork go on ! . . Vehdant. Fossil, Jan. 10th. Co. E will give a grand military ball here on the evening of Feb. 22d. , Considerable plowing is being done in this vicinity during this fine weather. Jas. Barnard has just completed a new house and will move into the same in a few days. A number of our people attended the public installation and dance at May villeifriday night, and rejwrt having had a Bplendid time. The following officers of Fossil Lodge No. 110 1. O. O. F. were installed pub licly on Jan, 4th: L. Parker, N G; Ralph Hamilton, V G ; A. B. Lamb, Secretary ; B. KeUay, Treas. Dr. II. S. Goddard left Wednesday to join his wife in Portland. The doctor has been a resident of this place four years, and he and his w ife have many friends here who regret their departure. Lucy Ann. Beecher Flat Flabs. Mrs. Nellie Ramsay has been very sick this week. Miss Jennie Ramsay is stopping for the present at the home of Dr. Nott at Fossil. No weddings to report, but probably there will be soon, as some of the girls are wearing "immense" rings on the proper fingers, and some of the boys aro busy locating claims, prearatory tow ards 'doing some good for their country.' Anumlwrof our grangers attended the Grange Council at Fossil Saturday. They seem determined to knock the Or-, egon militia "iu the head." B. K. Sear cy is in a "queer fix." He has a hank ering to ho a Soldier for Uncle Sam, and he also wants to be a granger--and he can't be both. : , P. A. Fry experienced a runaway one day this week. lie was hauling water with a span of thoroughbred "Rat tlers," and the animals thinking they were too fine-blooded for such common work, con cluded to try their speed. And the way they made the sparks and fur fly for about 15 minutes was amazing. They were caught before any damage was done, however. Gkanueh. Important Notice, Look here 1 Do yon know ft. L. Sabin ? We do. We must have what is due us, and unless prompt payment is made, we will enforce collection at once. No fool ishness; wo can not wait any lonuer. L. W. Dajujno & Co, OFFICIAL PAPER. The GLOBE'S Enormous Cir culation Entitles It to the Honorable Distinction. .- i"," ; r'3 TV v,- 4 VVLj V iu The County Court last week, with its usual good judgment, very properly des ignated the Globk the' offieiul paper of Gilliam county for the ensuing year. The other two county papers also applied for the appointment and made a vigor ous fight for it. Jno. A. Brown of the Record fought for it witli the tenacity of a bulldog, , remaining at the county seat all week, boring the court upon the sub ject. In order to try his uusl manner of "bulldozing," he even filed a com plaint of fraud against the Glouk's list that was filed with the clerk. The court were accorded the privilege of examin ing our books, and found that they cor responded exactly with the list given. The Globe has over one hundred more bona fide subscribers in Gilliam county than either of the other papers; and we believe that . bad they confined their lists to actual bona fidt subscribers, the Gihe can outnumberthein 3 to 1. Just how Mr. Brown is able to figure out the number of subscribers he claims to have in this county,' out of fin edition of ten quires, (240 copies) is probably liest know n only to himself. But every body is onto "Old Jno. A." Notwithstanding this high-sounding and honorable title, "Official Paper," our advertising rates and subscription price remains the same, the latter being $1.60 per year, strictly in advance. West Fork Squibs, W. G. Hhepard is pushing the work on his mammoth bam. Nearly all the settlers on the creek are busy speeding the plow these fine days. Clarence Zachary, who had his leg fractured some time ago, is able to get around aain, but will probably be a cripple the balance of his days. Jasper Leaho is evidently the same old Jap, as of yore, notwithstandiug the recent, reports that he had reformed. The news has reached here that he is in the Union county jail,' on a charge of embezzlement. A Oerman, who had been grubbing sage brush for Del Zachary'.. for several weeks, was relieved of what loose chance k he had in his jeans a few davs ago while i at work on Del 'a place at the month" of I3utte creek. Del had been to town and on his way home lie passed where the German was at work, and paid him $23, and went on to his home, A few minutes after, a man with a red hand kerchief over his face for a mask, rode up to the German and accused him of being a Sullivan detective, and at the same time told him to "fork over" what change he had on him, which he promptly did without any "back talk." j The highwayman then rode away and we have not heard any clue yet as to his j identity. ' Sqiib. - . , Contention Crosscuts. Ed Horn and his better went to Shoofly Saturday. Marriage has had a great and beneficial effect upon Ed, and be is really sociable since having his "eye teeth cut" or whatever you've a mind to call it. AH the citizens of Contention are in good humor this week, because the wel come little Glokk got here Saturday, on time the first for several weeks. It is our bible over here, and were it not for its weekly visits, our people would soon grow up in superstition and ignorance. We learn that A. S. McAllister has gone to Salem to lobby for an open river and the new eqnnty of Mitchell. Go it, Mac, we are all with you. While .you are at it, just "lob" a bill through an nulling the indebtedness Act, also kill the mortgage tax law. Let every man pay tax on what is in sight, and the levy in this county will not be 12 mills. When such firms as - Gilman, French fc Co. do not pay $1 tax, it certainly is time to kick. Let us hear from others on this subject. Hi'lls-byk. T,ha Best Wagons. The best wagon' in the world is the new Peter Schuttler tabular axle wagon.
