The supreme court has decided the po
litical case in favor of Pierce. The court
held that while it may have been an er
ror in printing the name on the ballot
twice, the vote should not be lost. This
will leave Oregon standing, one peoples
and three republican Pres. electors.

Col. Bob Ingersol, one of trie world's

Our citizens have re-considered the
matter ami have decided to incorporate
nnder the name of "City of Condon," in
stead of town, as was at first intended.
We will wake up one of these fine morn
ings ami realize that we are actually liv
ing in a city which, according to our
friend Webster, means an incorporated
town. Thu petition for incorporation is
signed by all of our citizens.
J no. A. Brown announces in last week's
Arlington Hecord that ho has sold out
and turned the paper over to Mr, J. M.
Johns. The only surprising thing about
it is tliHt the. paper ran as long att it did
under the old management. It is the
inevitable result when a ja-rsou attempts
to make a success at anything without
lirst learning the business and eapecial
ly the newspaper business. With a fa
therly feeling the j,ohk pointed out to
Mr. Brow n when he first launched the
paper that it was a dangerous undertak
ing, but he would not heed our warning,
Mr. Johns is a gentleman and a scholar,
and we wish the pajicr success under his
management.
It seems that the useless beast called
the gossip, infests all sections of the
country, A queer story is told by the
Cincinnati Times as the failure of a Cler
mont county merchant recently. While
in that city lie was attracted by the
watches displayed in a pawn shop win
dow, and stepped inside to examine
them. Two or three persons from his
village happened to pass and saw him.
They went home and gossiped about the
matter. A report w bs spread that lie
was hard up, and had been puwuitig his
watch in Cincinnati. The report injured
his business, and his creditors also be
gan to press him. In a short time be
was com alled to make an assignment.
New counties up here hi the Inland
Empire are getting as thick as "dotr on a
Men's back." It is said a bill is already
drawn for Hood county, with Hood Riv
er as county seat; the new territory to
include Cascade Locks. The Mitchell
people want a slicing of counties to be
done by the legislature. They, want a
slice cut off from the west part of (irant
and some ofr the northern part of Crook
to form Mitchell county, with Mitchell
as county seat. Antelope has also put a
ball in motion slid baa a jaititiou signed
by about 2o0 names, asking the legisla
ture to cut a strip off from the northern
part of Crook and all of that iortion of
Wasco lying past of Deshutes, and create
the county of Antelope, with Antelope
as county seat. Of the three proposed
changes, the Mitchell people need it the
worst, as at present they are obliged to
travel about J00 miles over the roughest
country in Oregon, in going to their pres
ent county seat, Canyon City.
The Escaped Prisoners Capt-
' ured.
Murray and liein, who escaped from
the Condon jail last week, are again
locked upthis time in the steel cell.
After escaping from jail they traveled in
tiie direction of the railroad at Blalock,
and it appears they stole something in
the way of clothing, provisions, gins,
etc., from nenrly every house they passed
during night time.
.Sunday night they stole a Win. rifle,
a raxor, some rope and a number of other
articles from the house of II. L. Wise
man on lower Kuek creek. Next day Mr.
Wiseman finding them near there with
the stolen property, arrested them both
and took them to Blalock, where they
bail their preliminary examination Tues
day More Justice O. Parrish. They
were bound over to tiie grand jury in
the sum of $:)00 each, and the constable,
J. E. Sindel, brought them to Condon.

At their examination, liein . told that
he had never seen Mnrry until two or
three daya lx-fore, and it was not known
to the Blalock people that these were the
escaped prisoners until they reached
Clem on their way back. When Squire
Parrish placed their bonds at iSOO, they
seemed greatly astonished, and made
souiH lengthy arguments to have the
lunula reduced, and spoke of a great
many places in different portions of the
country w here they had been, where
bonds were not placed so high for steal
ing similar articles. It is very easy to
predict how they learned all this Infor
mation, It is presumed they stole the
rope with the intention of catching
horses with which to make their escape
out of the country.
They evidently aro a hard set, and
their chances for going over the road are
extremely good. It is not probable that
they will receive much mercy or accom
modation at the hands of tiie sheriff
hereafter.

Mrs. P. C. Bnffington became danger
ously sick Saturday evening, but is con
siderably improved. ,
Mr, J. Q. Zaehary is in Ellerisbnrg
this week. His wife is visiting friends
in town and vicinity during his alwence.
Mrs. Zach Keys is very sick from the
effects of a tumor. As soon as she is
able to travel she will be takeu to Port
land to have it removed.
J. h. Combs left this week for Albany
to visit his parents whom be has not;
seen for several years, lie expects to
return in altout a month.
L. D. Spear has the lumber on the

to the sieknebs of Mr. Spear.
Among these present at the I. O. O. F.
festivities here Wednesday night were
Sheriff Wilcox and wife and Mr. and
Mrs. E. E. Smith, of Condon'.
T. J. Smith left here Saturday for a
vMt to Ohio, He is going to work in
his brother's mill, enlarging the same
and putting in new machinery.
Rev. Jas. ilowerton is holding a series
of Baptist meetings here this week, be
ginning Sunday evening. Heisa pleas
ant speaker, and has a large congrega
tion each evening.
We are having some delightful weath
er at present, but will probably come to
an abrupt terminus before lone; it istoo
early in the winter to expect this kind
of weather to last long.
Eahlon Hall, the celebrated Antelepe
Fossil stage driver, failed to "git tharon
time" last Thursday. He did not arrive
'until Friday, and then laid up for re
pair until Monday "you bet!".
Saturday night some ol the boys rang
out the old year and in the new, In the
most vigorous manner by ringing bells
and blowing horns. The noise was suffi
cient to scare all the horses within ten
miles.
Lots of dances now. Wednesday night
the 1. O.0. 17 gave tail and "eupjr
u,hi..li lHn.lv attended and was a
most enjoyable event. Previous to this
the Lodge had a public installation of
ofbeera.
A few farmers hereabouts are already
plowing, while some of our townspeople
show every symptom of being severely
atllicted with spring fever. Hut likely
that is a very natural feeling with them
I know it is w ith me.
We heartily congratulate Condon on
her conclusion to incorporate, fcinee we
incorporated two years ago there has
been a grand change and improvement
in our town, and we do not believe
there ts a law-abiding citizen in Fossil
who regrets the change.

John Hendricks, brother of onr attor
ney, the bright yonna man who taught
a Rhort term of school near Mayville
about three yours aco, is visiting; his rel
atives here, having come over last week
from his home at T-nwen, Harney coun
ty. The school board at Lone Rock en
gatred him to teach their school, and he
wrote telling them he would come at
once, which he did, riding; through 'on
horseback. Tut when he arrived he
found that they had engaged anottier
teacher. It is a sad disappointment to
John, as it waff an expensive
trip, and
he feels that the school board has not

Lone Rock Rumblings.
Peny L. Ham, one of our merchants,
started Monday for a six weeks visit to
bis old home in Arkansas.
Our reboot began , Monday with Mr.
Htraton as teacher. Our school is so
promising that one of our most charm
in(f widows, aged about two score years,
is attending,
The first of the week Jim Bennett sold
four town lots, one to Mr. Nielson, the
Lone Kock-Heppner stage man and the
other three to Ed Wineland. It is en
couraging to we such citizens as there
buying property and locating in our
town.
The United States contains 70,000 law
yers, 11,000 of whom are in .New York
City, making the proportion there about
one to every 150 of the population.
France, with a tabulation of 40,000,000,
has but 6,000 lawyers, and Germany has
only 7,000 ont of a population of 50,000,
000. Lost Monday Joe- Combs, sheriff of
Grant county,' paid our town a visit and
arrested Geo, Madden, who has been
acting in a manner as to create suspi
cion since his chum, Albert Smith, went
to the lock-up and made a confession of
larceny. We hope the yoong man will
le able to clear himself of the serious
charge
The hills and valleys have exchanged
their mantle of white for that of a beau
tiful green. The roads are dry and get
ting dusty already ; and the weather is
so delightful that only for an occasional
peep in the almanac, one might think it
was time to round up the "old-fashioned
incubator" or make garden.
Most of our people do not seem vey
much pleased to learn of the re-captnre

fer seeing their tax money applied to!

Condon Sunday night, with a full house.
God blessed the work, the result being
several convert, and the church very
much strengthened by several accessions
to the Congregational church, and the
organization of a M. E, class.
