Charley Bears ami wife returned to tbeir home near Mayville last week, af ter month's delightful visit to their relatives In Portland and Vancouver. H C Strickland killed a huge porcu pine on Hay creek last week, probahly the largest ever seen in this section. We believe Hugh said it weighed 130 lbs. Our city is full of peoplo who came to attend the grand military ball. Col. Lucas has beautifully decorated the Inv inoense hall with flags and thrilling war scene. ; Wro. A. Fisher, the famous fruit man of Haystack, brought a load of his fine apples to town Monday. It is needless to add that they went like fried mush for breakfast. Mamma When that boy threw stones at you, why didn't you come and tell me Instead of throwing them back? Little on Toll youl Why, you couldn't hit a barn door. Ex. For sale A complete outfit, consisting of a top buggy, span of black horses weighing about 1000 lbs each, aged six 'years, good roadsters; also good harness, all for 125; easy payments. Inquire at thia office. We owe an apology to our renders for not publishing the bills last week allow ed by the county court although It was not the Ulohk'u fault, as the list could not be procured, for the official paper, In time for last Issue. Searcy, who knows the weakness of newspajxir men for yellow-legged chicken, presented the (ji,obe this week with a young span of as tooth some Shanghai as ever tickled our edi torial throat. When it comes to doing justice to a bow) of chicken and gravy, editor' and minister are "squarely in It." " Immense loads of winter good are coming in daily for our merchants. Do not send away for anything you can get here. Keep the money in circulation at home, and none of u will ever hear of dull times. By the time expressage is paid on goods sent away for, it amounts to more than the same goods can be bought for right here. We bad a pleasant call Monday from Mr. J. B. Smith of Thirty mile. After renewing his subscription he informed us that hi two boys, George and John, and John Anderson just returned from the lakes near Clarno'a place on the Jro Pay. They killed 60 line ducks end geese, and George shot two magnificent awau, one 7 and the other liB feet from tip to tip. Mr. J. H. Miller and Mrs. S. A. Mud dock made a business trip below the 1st of the week, the former going to Fort land and the latter to The Dalles. They drove to Arlington with a private rig drawn by a pair of bright, red-nostrilled mules, and the folks along the road say It presented a beautiful sight to see the ladies thrash their way along with a whip in each hand. Hereafter the Glohk will contain able and newsy weekly letters from Arling ton, Fossil and Lone Uock, thus giving all the most important news of the en tire county. The subscription price is 60c less than that of any of the other county papers. The way our list is grow ing daily, is ample proof that the intelli grunt people of this county appreciate (Vj official and leading newspaper, .rbwughout this land of our there is a gradual tendency toward electing both United States senators and the presi dent directly by the people. The propo sition is becoming more and more popu lar among the masses, but not many senators take to the idea. They are al most without exception moneyed men who can bring strong influences to bear whenever they can get a footing, and it would not be half o easy to manipulate the general public, as it would a few trusted with the interest of many. Fossil Flash'. Bain, rain, delightful rain ' Mis Hattie Hoover is teaching the Butte creek school. The flouring mill has shut down for want of wheat. No flour on hHtid either. V. C. Martin came in Sunday fur Dr. Goddard wiio went out and prescrib ed for one of ' the boys who had been very sick. N'early everybody who went away from here to work during the summer have returned, some of them with less money than they started with. The Fire Co. concluded to postpone their danco here on Thanksgiving; but', there will be some horse-racing a four and 600-yd race, for 20 each. Sunday morning a how fell with Geo. W. Hamilton's little son Preston, and in gettitig up, the little fellow was Htruck on the head, cutting an ugly gash in his scalp. A doctor was hastily sum moned and Dr. Palmer went over and sewed up the wound, which is not a dan gerous one, The greatest excitement of the week was a case before Squire Donaldson Sat urday, It originated out of a row which took place at a dance up the krick Fri day night, wherein Sam Thompson and E. D. Arnold were contestants. Sam was brought to the "justice mill, "plead guilty to assault and was fined f 10 and costs, amounting In ail to $14.20, and went away rejoicing? , Two young ladies, the Misses Kittmay of Keys Flat, came to town Monday. When coming down Hoover creek, their horse "ran off," thrownittg them out. Neither was badly hurt, but were beau tifully adorned with mud. Perry Fry, who, by tho way, Is somewhat of a la dies' man himself, caught the horse, loaded in the young ladies and ail came to town without further mishap. Squire Donaldson has plenty of busi ness nowadays. Monday he Issued a warrant for an absconding debtor, W. II. Williams. Itundall Palmer was depu tized and brought him back "a-kitin" next day, and Williams very promptly and properly paid every cent he owed. He had been carrying the mail between here and Waldron, and last week sold out to Walter Helms for 1220. The temptation to skip and have some fun was to great to resist but he didn't skip very fur Vkhdamt. Arlington Antonatlons. Marshal Carlisle has gone to the Wil lamette valley on official business. Walter Compton and Ed Smith re turned Monduy from a flying trip to Ba ker City. The long-looked-for rains have come at lust, and refreshing showers moisten the plains. Col. J. P. Lucas wa a passenger on the southbound stage, on his return from Portland. Thanksgiving day will be appropri ately observed here by religious services in the Methodist church, conducted by Kev. Denison. Our town is again free from diphthe ria, and school has been in session dur ing the week with a fair attendance. The many interruption the school have had since the beginning of the term are greatly to be deplored. Tho blockade on the U. P. Ry. near Bonneville, occasioned by a landslide, still continues, necessitating transfers by boat. As a consequence, trains are delayed, mails irregular, and many other incoaveniences suffered by the people. No blame is charged to the company, however. The situation is the compa ny's misfortune, not its fault. The spasm of political fervor genera ted by the result of the election has en tirely subsided and business and society have resumed their normal channels. The republican is calmly awaiting the dire calamities he forsees as the inevita ble result of the great change; while the democrat is deliriously happy in view of but the few intervening months of wick ed and oppressive reign of republican ismwhen the dawn of the golden age shall appear. Which shall realize his expectations? Sckibb. Lone Rock Rumblings. The heaviest rain storm of tho bcbboii occurred Tuesday night, and on Wednes day morning everything was frozen'as hard as a bachelor's biscuit. Copner & Ham are building a fine smoke house, having bought a large quantity of fresh pork from some Hay stack folks, and are going to make bacon of it. Henry Hughes has opened up a new enterprise in our burg a shoemaker shop. Henry is the "boss" workman. Rev. Rawlins was a passenger on the Bennett stage Friday evening. After rounding up the inhubitnnts Sunday morning and evening with a conple of "bang-up" sermons, took his departure Monday morning for Fossil. Ed Copner and Henry Hughes were out on a hunting tour lust week, and Henry succeeded in brfgging a couple of fine venison, while Ed attended camp. But when they came home Ed said WE killed 'em. ' Snpt. Parker has granted the request of the petitioners, and consolidated school districts 13 and 14, the name of the new district to be No. 13. New di rectors will be elected at once and sub stantial arrangements made for the building of the new school house,' We believe everyone is pleased with the bright prospects of our school, - Cowboy.
