Newspaper Page TextTHE COMDOM GLOBE. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 28, 1892. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON. The Columbian Exercises at Condon. (Communicated). On last Friday morning, 21st inst, and the four hundredth anniversary of the landing of Columbus on the Y?tern hemisphere, the sun rose bright and clear and sent his beams ' far across the Condon lulls. The many w hool children were up almost as soon as Old Sol, in ex pectancy for the exercises of the day. Long before noon many teams came from the surrounding country, and the town presented something of a holiday ap pearance, with flags flying from all over town, and at noon the anvils boomed out a rousing salute in honor of tbe day. At? o'clock p m the military compa y marched to the school house with colors flying, where were assembled tbe school and qnite a number of citizens and old soldiers. Prof. Hill, principal of the school and Miss Anna Clarke, as sistant, then arranged the school in the form of a "hollow square," and the mil itary formed line in rear. Mr. C. Danneman, a veteran of the war, assisted by other old soldiers, then raised the flag over the school honse and paid a brief tribute to the stars and stripes. Then the school in unison greet ed the flag and pledged their allegiance to it. They executed a pretty military salute, and with the assistance of all present, sent np a rousing cheer. - All who were able then entered the building and for about two hours listened to a very interesting program rendered by the pupils, consisting of essays, recita tions and music. The exercises were voluntary on the part of the grammar class, and well rendered, the essays showing that the pnpils have a pretty thorough knowledge of the history of Columbus. One of the prettiest sights we have seen for a long time was the school inarching from the school house to town, over 100 pupils marching in column of twos, from little tots np to young ladies and gentlemen, with our flag waving over them, formed indeed a pretty pict ure and demonstrated that we have a school to be proud of; Too much praise cannot be given Prof. Hill for his labors in preparing for and carrying out the program. One thing has been clearly proven Condon is de cidedly fortunate in having so able and energetic educator at the head of its school, with an equally able and accom plished assistant. If, as is usually the case, there are any fault-finding croak ers in this district, they should be trans ferred to the northern extremity of North America, where their bones will in futnre ages be found with those of pre-historic animals, and people will wonder what kind of animals they were. All honor to our worthy teachers ! In the evening the Literary Society held its regular weekly meeting at the church, and wag well attended. The ex ercises were of interesting order and were much appreciated by the audience, the general tendency of the program be ing in remebrancs of Columbus. - The features of the evening deserving especial mention were the reading by Miss Anna Clarke and oration by Prof. Hill. These meetings of the society promise to be the most pleasant features of our winter's entertainment. After the society adjourned, those who enjoy dancing repaired to Downing's hall and had a very pleasant time until the small hours of of the clock. So end ed the festivities of the 21st. That was a great "stiff' some one gaveJ the Journal man last week, that caused him to find the enormous "mare'a neet" in the Scott Donaldson case. The only : truth in his entire effusion was that Don aldson was arrested. No charge of for-1 (jrene Gmnwn started to Webfoot Sat gery was brought against the man ; the ' nrla.vi "Cowboy" to the contrary not- Cimplaint against him was for obtain-1 ing goods under false pretense, preferred by Halstead, Kinehart & Co., and a note was given for the amount, $17.50. John Maddock eeenred the note, and that's all there was to it. None ' of our busi ness men cashed any Tjf his checks, nor were they asked to do so. Squire Clark used excellent judgment in turning him loose. A number of similar trifling ca ses have been brought before the grand jury and were all thrown out. By hold ing Donaldson until April would have cost the county several hundred dollars unnecessary expense. The Journal's rooster ought to fill up again and hunt for another "mare's nest." B. T. Snell and son have gone to the mountains for lumber with which Win. will build a tmrn on his place. , Miss Hattie Phillips is very sick with scarlet fever. A number of scholars have quit school on account of the dis ease. Judging from- appearances we will have another wedding before long on Rock creek. Can you guess who the lucky one is? F. G. Gouldsby, formerly of this place, now of Murray, Idaho, was here this week looking after his interests in this section, and has left again for his home. L. O. Ralston, our enterprising merr chant, is having a dwelling bouse built adjoining the store. He says we must all come to the "house-warming" when it is completed. Messrs. John Phillips and Fred Doug las Jeft this week for the mountains, to spend a couple of weeks shooting at the festive deer. We understand they took a few hams along so as to not be entirely out of meat for eating purposes. J. M. Johns, one of the popular mer chants of Olex, is visiting his relatives at Baker City this week. Messrs. Ral ston & Johns are untiring in their efforts to please their numerous customers, and by keeping a complete stock of every thing and selling at tbe lowest prices, they now get all the trade from this sec tion that formerly went to Arlington. The marriage of Mr. Arthur Wills and Miss Ella Blake of Eight Mile took place at one o'clock Thursday, 20th inst., at the home of the bride's parents, the cer emony being performed by Rev. King in the presence of a few friends. Wm. Patburg acted as best man and Miss Mary Blake as bridesmaid. A social dance was giveu in the evening at the Murray house, where Mr. Wills and his young wife will reside in future. Both the young people are quite popular, and their many friends wish them a happy and prosperous career. Tiff. Lone Rock Rumblings. Jack Frost has been making himself very familiar up here along about 5 o'clock in the morning. Immigrants still keep' on knocking the bumps out of the roads, apparently ob livions to the rapid approach of winter. Mackey, the photographer, has pitch ed his tent among us for a few days, and is making splendid pictures from some faces that are homely enough to fight a bulldog with. Dr. Ricklin has been switching around amongst our inhabitants for several days overflowing, as usual, with republican ism. Hon. H. E. Hayes, the people's party representative, delivered several power ful lectures here Saturday, to large and enthusiastic crowds. In consequence Weaver will carry Lone Rock precinct which will of course elect him. Peace seems to prevail among our peo ple again, eince Justice Clark set his mill a-grinding up what pepper was left from last week's "grist." Jas. Cole man was fined $10 and costs, amounting in all to about $30. Nettie Robinson got out of the scrape somehow. It is .hoped this will have a tendency to put a stop to such conduct. Cowboy. Germany Gems. Greeting to "Squib!" Glad to see you back again in the juicy columns of the "Civilizer." Val Wheeler is making excellent prog ress with the new school house. It is a handsome building. Miss Putnam, who recently came out from Iowa, is in charge of a private school here, which began Monday, 17th inst. withstanding. He etill has a few head of "kine" upon the range. Frisky.
