Governor Pennoyer ha a finally come out flat-footed, or rather web footed, for the people's party, hav ing made a rousing speech at Rose burg Saturday in behalf of the third party. ' Saturday's Evening Telegram says: "Everything that Governor Pennoyer says is listened to with interest and respect, hence the people's party managers have made provision for giving wide cir culation to the address which the governor delivered this afternoon at Koseburg. It settled the ques tion of the governor'e status in this campaign, and places him squarely in line with the new party. We regret to lose the governor from the democratic organization, but it is his privilege to go wherever he can find the most congenial surround ings. But the people's party man agers will be disappointed if they expect the governor to carry any considerable following with him from the democratic ranks into the third party. There are reasons, and valid reasons, why republicans Bhould flock to the Weaver stand ard, but the very reasons which take republicans there will hold democrats in line. This is a year , when democrats expect a fruition of their hopes. The chances for a sweeping democratic victory and the establishment of democratic principles were never brighter. Man who are earnest in their de mocracy will not desert their party organization at a time like this, un less they labor under some strange halucination. We give Governor Pennoyor credit for sincerity. Doubtless he thinks he is doing the right thing, yet we believe that he will wake up the morning after election to discover that he has made the mistake of his life." The sooner people recognize that the faithful wife in the home in all cases furnishes her full half of sup port to the home the better it will be. The wisest and most successful men know that their success is due as much to their wives as to them selves. The best capital a man ever had to start on is a good wife; and to keep her at her best she must always be trusted as his equal in all things. Ex. An editor of a North Carolina paper evidently is a little sore yet over the result of the war. Hear him: "The whole business of the 'old soldiers' and pension system is theft and pillage, pure and simple. We wish to God that there had been enough democrats in congress to have slapped the lousy beggars of the North- in their dirty facee This would have served them right. Recall all the dull seasons that you can remem ber; predict failure for every busi ness enterprise. in the town; with draw your patronage from your lo cal newspaper and do not spend a cent for its support unless you can make $5 off the printer for every $1 you spend with him; expect him to run the paper on wind. Tell all the world that business in the country is dead beyond resurrec tion and have the report go abroad. Prophesy another panic, trust no body financially, be afraid to em ploy your capital and make every body else feel the same way." , . Hundreds of penniless immi grants are in Canada leaning hard against the border-line that pre vents them from entering the Uni ted states and growing up with the country. They came, it is strange to chronicle, by means of steam ship lines whose widely advertised repugnance to introducing undesir able immigration has lately kept jubilant the soul of secretary los ter. A presidential elector receives for hia services the sum of $15 per day for each day in attendance at the capitol, together "with 10c per mile each way from his place of resi dence bv the most traveled route to the place of meeting."
