When mob law is made expensive to the taxpayer and perilous to the official heads of , those who are sworn and paid to preserve the peace, there will be less of it. Damage suits for property or life destroyed by riots or mobs; civil and criminal actions against sheriffs and other peace officers for mal feasance in failing to disperse unlawful gatherings should become fashionable, to the end that there may be less truck ling to lawlessness by officers of the law hereafter." There is much food for thought in the above, and it comes very close borne just now, since Multnomah or Clackimas county so recently escaped the disgrace of lynching a murderer. The remedy lies in the careful selection of judges and prosecutors. ;; ; - .;' ; ' . The Detroit Tribune, the leading republican organ of Michigan, eavs: "There will be 444 votes in the elec toral college this year, eo the sue eessful candidate must secure at least 223. The "Solid South" casts 159 and, despite the talk about sev eral of those states being doubtful, nobody whose judgment is worth anything doubts that the Force bill it-sue will carry every one for the democratic candidate. New Jersey 10 may be counted with equal confidence on the same 6ide, also 4 from Michigan. This makes 173 that may be called "sure." Connecticut and Indiana would add 6 and Jo respectively, making 194, and New York's 36 would carry the total up to 230, 6even more than a majority. The republicans are rel atively better off than before by reason of the admission of the new states, and the changes in older states caused by the reapportion ment, but the combination of 1876 and 1884 would carry the day again 1892. There are chances for Cleveland this year in other states that no democratic candidate has had in previous years; and it is possible that he might lose. New York and still carry the country. But in all probability New York will again be, as often before, the 'pivotal' state." suffer no more with sore or tired feet Ualsteud, Kluebart d: Co.
