V f. THE GOIiDOH GLOBE. FRtDAY, JULY 8, 1892. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY, OREGON. From the official rote at the late state election it is learned that the total vote cast for congressman in the first d'gtrict was 40,751, and in the second district 34,897,' total in the state, 75.648. Hermann's plu rality of Veatch, in the first dis trict, is 5910, but as Rork, the peo ple's party candidate, had 7518 votes, and Rigdon, prohibitionist, 1285-votes, Hermann lacks 2883 votes of having a majority. In the second district Ellis' plurality over Slater is 3539, but as Luce, peo ple's;, received 5940; and Bright, prohibition, 1178 votes, Ellis lack 3579; of a. majority. Moore's plu rality over Bennett for supreme judge is only 2575v in the state, while He- lacks 12,422 votes of hav ing a majority. For attorney -general Chamberlain, democrat, is elected over Webster, republican, there being no other candidates, by a majority of 430. Portland Tele gram. The Heppner Gazette, a republi can paper, says: "It is reported Khai whet L. R. Webster received tine- information that almost the en- lute' newspaper fraternity of Oregon waa arrayed against him, he passed the matter over lightly and thought himself secure with- over 8000 ma prity at his back. But he was beaten, and that on principle. It will teach a wholesome lesson. A public servant must conduct him self as becomes his station, or cease , seeking office; he must take into consideration that the newspapers can defeat or elect a man; that they have some influence after all. Though some of them in the state of Oregon are published in remote places, it is not well to scorn their efforts." Hon. John W. Foster of Indiana, has been appointed secretary of state by President Harrison.- He was sent as United State's minister to Mexico by Grant ia 1873, and was reappointed by Hayes in 1880, In March of that year he was trans ferred to Russia, and held that mission until November, 1881, when he resigned. President Ar thur then appointed him minister to spain. He served from Februa ry, 1883, to March, 1885, when he resigned and returned to the Uni ted States, having negotiated an important commercial treaty with Spam. - The Oregon Pacific managers have contracted for 10,000 ties with which to repair their road between Albany and the front, and are mak ing other demonstrations indica tive of their intention of pushing . the road to an eastern terminus. Ochoco Review. The survey of the road in question crosses Butte ereek a few miles east of Fossil, runs through .Condon and will in tersect with the U. P. at Pendle fon, ' - - - ; v James Lotan has been appointed collector of customs at Portland, and was confirmed by the senate Friday. Mr. Lotan is a native of New York, aged about fifty years, and'is one of the most energetic bu einess- men of Portia nd. Hi s ap pointment will give general satis faction after the first breezes of dis appointment blow over. Twenty five men could not be appointed to one position. Dalles Chronicle. Senator Peffer in presenting a pe tf tioa from Kansas asking that aongress take action to stop the Ijsmohings- which are becoming so iraquenfy, said that .the practice wa growing: in- all parts of the oouDtlr--northv south, "east and west, and that he hoped the judi ciary committee, to-' which, the peti tion was referred, would, promptly report on- the subject. '. : If the names of the nominees are too long-to suit your, laziness, call thorn Cleve and Steve, for short. 3 Given- His Time. I hereby notify all persona tbnt I will Dot be re sponsible ior-uny debt or liabilltiea contracted hy my son, Bert Crawford of, MavvillH. He bat fir fit hi time aud if hi own, free nprnt. iMai-Ulsr 'Ik. CI (UTDWQ. After all, there is no occasion to begin to get excited over politics for two or three months yet, and now .that the Fourth is over, let us keep cool and go fishing or picnic ing just the same as if nothing was going to happen. We might add that the world will wag along just about the same whichever way it goes. Unfortunate citizens of Mexico are eating alfalfa in & vain effort to ward off starvation. Thirty deaths have already been reported, and there is a probability that the total is much greater. The same spirit that loaded ships with food for hun gry Russia will doubtless come to the relief of sufferers nearer home. A favorite ballot dancer receives about $36,000 a year. John L. Sul livan's yearly income for the last ten years has been about $100,000 a year. If John L. and the ballet dancer had brains enough to be president of the American senate or secretary of state, $8,000 a year would be ample remuneration. Gatling, the great gun-maker, has improved his gun to such an extent that he can fire 1200 shots a minute out of it, by one man. Hotchkiss and Maxim are two oth er great gun-makers, and the way they are improving guns, will soon make war a most dangerous em ploy men t1 It has been discovered that more than half the prisoners in Idaho's penitentiary are insane to greater or lesser extent. The only noted patient is a man named Hatton. It is not known what has produced the dementia of the convicts, as they are said to be well treated and well fed. Attorney-General Chamberlain is in Baker City, for the purpose of appearing in the delinquent tax suit of the state of Oregon vs. Ba ker county. The suit is to recover from the county about $12,000 miscellaneous taxes which have been due since 1879. Mr. Blaine doesn't want to go to the senate. In fact, he doesn't care where he goes himself, just so he can dictate the caloric destina tion of Benjamin Scott Harrison. St. Paul Globe. ' At the People's national conven tion held at Omaha July 4th, Gen. J. B. Weaver of Iowa was nomina ted for president and Gen. Jas. G. Field of Virginia for vice president. A Georgia murderer who is to be hanged July 23, has sold his head to a phrenologist for $15. This is more than the average dead-head is worth. A Fair Verdict. Great lawyer I'm indeed glad to see yon; the verdict ia in. Client Already ? "Yes eir; I knew I would fret it. Yon receive $5000, but you are to pay half the COSIS." "Fair enough, I am sure.
