Mr. David Hamilton and daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Ralph Hamilton, of Fossil,
were over to our city Tuesday doing some
trading with our merchants.
Persons elected to office must apply
to the county clerk for their certificates
of election, as he can nut send them out
without an order on him for the same.
Clerk Lucas sent the olllcial count to
Salem Thursday. He informs us this is
the quickest time ever made yet in the
county with such returns. That doesn't
look much like the new law is a drag.
The land as advertised American
Mortgage Co. vs S. V. and Theresa Coch
ran and M. V. and Mrs. Harrison, was
sold at sheriffs sale Boturday. It was
sold to the American Mortgage Co. for

Kd Copncr, the enterprising young
merchant of I,one Rock, came over to
our city Tuesday and returned next day.
He is building up a good business over
there, of which his numerous friends are
glad to learn. . ,
f Uev. W. C. Wise returned to Condon
Monday, after a couple of weeks' reeu-
juration at various points in the valley
ami on the const. Mr. Wise will fill his
regular appointments by preaching at
Condon and Matney next Sunday.
A. Henshaw's large new furniture
store is rapidly nearing completon.
Mr. Henshaw has already received a
largo order of furniture. Ho will be
ready for business in a few days, so don't
tend away for anything in his line.
Our school closed Wednesday. Prof,
(liven has given excellent satisfaction as
teacher, and has proven himself to be a
complete master of his profession. Miss
Blancho FiUwater has also given good
satisfaction in the primary department.
Charley Frazer and his sister, Miss
Fink Fraaer, came over from Lone Uoek
Wednesday. Miss Pink has not yet fully
recovered from her injuries received
some time since by being thrown otT a
borne. She expects to rcuiain in town a
few days for medical treatment.
In order to see how the new Balx'ock

The Arlington paper's abuse of our
worthy Squire Inst week came from very
bad grace, and the public "considers the
source." The funniest purt of it is, the
general remarks made by those who read
it, were that "Squire Tiitom is by far
the lest lawyer of the two, and probably
has forgotten more law than the Record
man ever knew.','
y The Australian ballot system has come
to stay. No city or state that has tried
it has gone back to the old system, with
its bluster, bribery, repeating and false
counting. Instead of abusing the new
method, the press should accept it as an
accomplished fact. By timely explana
tions the dullest voter now understands
it. Voters deem it a matter of self-pride
"as well as duty to master the simple de
tails that the law requires. It is worth
while to go to a little trouble to insure a
fn;4! vote and nu honest count.

Ghastly Discoveries.
Within the last week, two discoveries
of rather a ghastly nature were made in
this vicinity. While riding for cattle at
the mouth of Ferry canyon, Messrs. R.
Henson, W. N. Brown and Geo. Sch
found the skeleton of a man.

Shelby Shots.
A very pleasurable ball was given in
Welkin's hall a few nights since, iu hon

The dreadful suspense of the candi-1
dates is now over, for w hich the lucky
ones are duly thankful, no doubt.
Miss Stella Flett, w hoattended school
at Arlington during the winter and
spring, has returned to her home at
Shelby, w here she occupies the import
ant position of assistant P. M.
It is a great wonder to us that more of
the excellent government land in this
vicinity Is not taken. Thousands of
acres of as goodjand as there is in the
country lies here awaiting settlers.
, Union Sunday School w as organised
recently in the Snowshoe school house,
with oner SO members. They all take a
deep interest in the school, and much
good is expected to be derived there
from. A good shower of rain in these parts
would be a irrand thing just now. Some
of the grain out here will be a litlte thin
unless Jupiter Pluvius pays us a visit
very soon. Not much of the grain has
been scorched yet.
Mrs. R, A. Brown of Wood burn, who
had len visiting her son, A. J. Coch
ran the last month, left Friday for her
home. She expects to return soon and
reside upon her homestead which she
recently filed upon near her son's place.
