For instance, we are in the midst
of a great national election cam
paign, our resident's term is ex
piring and we are choosing the man
who will rule .more than a hundred
million neople for the next four
years. IWe will also elect senators
and many other lesser lights.
It is an event of first importance
to the future of the nation, yet the
casual observer sees nothing out of
the ordinary. He could hardly detect
that we have a vital campaign in iuu
swing.
We decline to become excited. We
are making no noise. We take
things as a matter of fact, or of
course, knowing that each man wUl
vote his own sentiments, and that no
matter who wins, the country win
move along in the future as it has in
the past always better and greater
than it ever has been before. That
is America, and our President has
more autocratic power in his fist
than that possessed by all of the
crowned heads left in Europe.

A change of rulers there usually
means violence, and bloodshed, and
revolution, if it is a forcible change:

THE FACTS
Arguments are now being sent
through the mail in the support of
the constitutional amendment to
limit interest rates in Oregon to 4
and 6 per cent. In concluding the ar
gument the articele says; "Your gov
ernment pays less than 5 per cent
on loans amounting to billions of
dollars. If it is right for Uncle Sam
it is right for Uncle Sam's subjects."
Press dispatches on the same
date show liberty bonds selling at the
lowest price on record, running from
$5.00 to $17.50 off on every $100
while U. S. Treasury Certificates to
meet current indebtedness are offerel
at 6 W, to 5 per cent. Canadian
bonds are hunting buyers at iy per
cent and ioreign government secur
ities are going begging at from 7 to
9 per cent and better. These are
facts and can be verified at anv bank.
Where would Oregon be if it
should pass a measure limiting inter
est rates in this state to 4 and 5
per cent? Oregon would simply be
off the map. This is not "capital
istic" propaganda. It is hard horse
sense and affects the life of every
industry in the state.
The Federal Reserve bank in San
Francisco according to .ureas dis
patches is contemplating raising its

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roswum
were the unfortunate victims of a
very serious fire Wednesday morn
ing when the destroying element visi
ted their pretty suburban home in the
Curtis addition and destroyed their
lartre barn including their automo
bile, farm implements, garden and
carpenter tools, 100 rabbits, a lot of
finfl chickens, etc. The fire occurred
at two o'clock in the morning and is
unaccounted for unless there was
some defective electric wiring as the
barn was lighted by electricity. No
one had been smoking about the
place and Mr. Roswurm is unable to
otherwise account for the fire.
The loss is about $2,600 with no in
surance.

looking after Washington County's
interests on the highway between
here and Gaston, was in Forest Grove
Tuesday. He states that the high
way will be given a substantial rock
base this year and opened. up to trav
el, the engineers thinking that some
of the fills have not settled sufficient
ly for completion this year and know
ing that a rock road travelled and
then scarified and hard surfaced,

highway, they have decided on this
course, it is expected that the hard
surface will be laid next season.
