In time, when Europe has recov ered, America will be required to compete with these countries for world trade America with Its high cost 'of manufacture againat Europe with its low cost - ' That is the condition which the present insane price inflation will bring about. The misfortune of others has made us fortunate today has enriched us beyond the dreams of avarice. But tomorrow it may be the re. verse. Foster Stone's lecture and mu sical recital at the high school Wed nesday night was highly prrised by those who heard it but was greeted by rather a small audience because of the many other attractions locally and in Portland. CERTIFIED POTATOES PAY Potato growers of Washington County plan to profit by the exper ience of growers in adjoining coun ties. In Multnomah County particu larly a few of the potato growers have taken up certified seed growing and this spring they have received orders for five times as much seed a they have on hand at a price fifty cents above market quotations. To be certified the potato seed must pass two inspections during the growing season and be again inspect ed after digging and in order to pass these inspectioss they must prove to be disease free and the tubers must be uniform in type and true to variety name. The cost of certifying ia $2.60 per acre and should they not pass nc charge is made. A number of grow ers are planning to start this industry this year particularly in the vicinity of Forest Grove and Tigard. Where this work ia undertaken if certified seed cannot be obtained for beginning, samples of seed on hi may be sent to the Seed Certification Committee at Corvallis, for inspection and If of sufficiently good quality they may be used for seed. It's a good thing to watch the ad col umns of the home paper, too, for some good bargains are often found there. Every farmer should subscribe foi the county paper. Many news Items, notices and local events you ought to know you will never know unlesB you read the home paper. We say this because we believe it and because the papers have always been 'Johnny-on- the-spot' in aiding the farm bureau." Another glimmer of light on the basic reason why Messrs. Dempsey and Babe Ruth get so much more money than a college professor is found in the fact that the newspapers have never put in extra telephones to answer queries as to whether the. professor has deciphered any more Babylonian tablets yet. Ohio State Journal, WASHINGTON COUNTY SCHOOL NEWS NOTES A very limited amount of garden seeds and flower seeds has been re ceived from the Department of Agri culture. They will be distributed to school children who request them as long as they last. N. C. Maris, Industrial Club Work er from Supt. Churchill's office in Salem, Is assisting the County perintendent in promoting the club work in Washington County -this week. The Teachers' Association meeting at Hillsboro, Saturday, March 15 was fairly well attended in spite of the very stormy day. Mrs. Ruby Shear er Brennon of Portland and Miss Kate Houx of Monmouth Normal both gave splendid talks on grade work in arithmetic, reading and geo graphy. Mr. E.. F. Carleton from the State Superintendent's office gave clear and convincing explanation of the need and working of the pro pored two mill state wide tax foi elementary education. A salary scale suggested by County Supt. Ager, of Jackson County, fot his teachers, was presented to the association and discussed at some length. No action of any sort was taken toy the association as such. The teachers of Washington County are inclined to be conservative and to act with considerable deliberation. O. A. C. CLUBS TO HOLD JOINT MEETING The Washington County O. A. C. club at Corvallis, of- which Harold Robinson. of this city, Is president, will meet with the recently formed O. A. C. club of this county in Hills boro, Friday evening, March 26, at 8:00 p. m. The meeting as planned will be in the nature of a "jollyup" and will give the graduates and. for mer students of the institution an opporunlty to become acquainted win the students now in attendance. Some good speaking and some mirth provoking stunts are promised by J. C. Leedy, president of the County club. Good "eats" are also on the program as the ladies have been notified to bring sandwiches and cake. The place of meeting will be the Hillsboro Grange hall. N. G.
