The following letter was writ
ten to Mrs. M. M. Baker of Bea
verton, by her son Jesse S.
Baker at Camp Meade, Md.: -'Camp
Meade, Md., Nov. 27,
1918. Dear father and mother:
I will try to answer your last
letter which l- received last
week. I didn't get your first
letter. I am fairly well and I do
hope that this finds you both
well I am still staying in a tent
but we have a stove in the tent
now, so that it isn't so cold. Be
fore I slept somewhat cold. The
weather here is a little chilly at
present though there hasn't
been any snow here at camp as
yet I would just as soon now
see any snow back here. I do
in our church. One of the songs
was Lord I'm Coming Home.' A
Y. M. C. A; man gave avery fine
talk. ; He told us that we want
to' be very good when we get
home. He said that we would
be counted as heroes though we
didn't get a chance to : get to
France.- He said that the girls
will be interested in us and that
they will ask us questions all
about the army.
I am writing this by candle
power so excuse mistakes. I am
sorry,', to hear that Dorothy
Baird died with the flu, poor
girl. Well mother I haven't any
girl as yet. Did Emma say that
I was her fellow. Well mother
I am still serving my precious

Well mother I will surely be
very glad to get back to Beaver
ton, Oregon, once again, and see
you all again. We are going to
have a big dinner tomorrow, we
will have turkey for one thing.
They have decorated the mess
halls with pine boughs. Sixty
per cent of the men are going
out on passes. I am going to
stay in the camp though, I will
only have to .work up until 1
o'clock tomorrow. I bet we will
have a fine time when I get
back. I don't know if you will
know me or not because I am
so" much fatter, and when I left
home, I guess that it is the fresh
air and the food that has put the
flesh on me. I weigh about 160
pounds. Someboy eh. I : am
sleeping in a tent with 5 other
soldiers. Well I will have to go
and wash for supper as we have
supper at 5 o'clock. We have
breakfast at 7 a. m. and dinner
at 12 o'clock. There is a nice
warm fire here in the tent now.
I am surely glad for having a
stove in the tent this time of
year. . ....
I was at the Y. M. C. A.
building last night, there was a
good religious meeting. They
sang old time songs, most of the
songs were those which we sing

you all a happy Thanksgiving,
and a Merry Christmas. I wish
that I could be home for Christ
mas. Well I will have to close

Boys' and Girls' Clubs Thanked.
Oregon girls' and boys' clubs
are publicly thanked for their
work in collecting fruit pits and
nut shells, by the pras division
of the chemical warfare service.
This action was taken in the
form of a letter .from O. H. Ben
son, in charge of government
club work, to H. C. Seymour.

uties arrange for wood at rea
sonable prices for villages and
small cities, through the opera
tion of a wood yard, and taking
orders from consumers and then
urging farmers to supply it at a
fair price. Wood cutting clubs
will be organized and a system
of competition inaugurated
among them. The scheme is
most popular in eastern . states
where the fuel shortage is more
acute than in the west. Fuel
Administrator Ered J. Holmes
does not believe such a step is
necessary in Oregon. ;
