This shows om of the thousands of French villages which have
been smashed t lusty brick heaps by opposing artillery during
German captv.ro and oeeupatlon. Too often French gunners are under
the necessity of sending shells into the homes where they have
spent happy years with their wives and babies.
Tour subscription to the Fourth Liberty Loan will help move
the ruin back into Germany.

Surprised the McKells.
A very pleasant surprise was
tendered Mr. and Mrs. W, C.
McKell Sunday evening of last
week on the occasion of their
fourteenth wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Davis, Mr.
and Mrs. F. G. Donaldson, Mr.
and Mrs. W. H. Boyd and Mr.
and Mrs. W. J. Leonard made a
trip to Beaverton, acquired a
generous supply of" ice cream
and cake and quietly motored
out to the McKell home. Mr.
McKell was equal to the occasion,
went to the garden and secured
several cantaloupes which he
had been saving lor just such an
occasion and when the ice had
cooled them to just the right
temperature, Mrs. McKell served,
the ice cream they had brought
in this delicious 'manner. The
eveninar was all too short and
was enjoyed to the utmost by
host and hostess and guests.
Mrs. Charles Swanson, who
was taken to Emmanuel hospital
in Portland recently, contracted
pneumonia and died as a result
of this attack on Thursday of
last week.' She leaves a sorrow
ing husband and two small chil
dren, one a girl of seven years
and the other a baby scarcely ft
month old. Funeral services
were held in Portland.
