Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gordon spent Sunday with relatives in Weston. Clarke Key of Umapine was a busi ness visitor here the first of the week. S. Roy Gwinn, life insurance rep resentative, was here from Pendleton Tuesday. Tuesday night's heavy frost put an end to blooming flowers in Athena gardens. Leonard Geissel and Dean Pinker ton spent a part of Armistice Day at Freewater. Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris spent Armistice day in Walla Walla where they visited friends. ' Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pittman visited friends in Weston this week. Harold Kirk and Ralph McEwen, Jr., attended the football game in Fendleton Armistice day. Mrs. May Johns left this morning for Vancouver, Wash., where her sis ter, Mrs. Andrew Proebstel, is critic ally ill. State inheritance tax appraiser, Larabee of Pendleton, transacted business here Tuesday. Mrs. Wade LeRoy is visiting Athe na friends this week. Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy were formerly Athena resi dents. Mrs. Berlin visited over Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alton Vaughan at Milton. After visiting at the M. W. Han sell home, Howard Whitney departed Sunday for Seattle. "Mose" Payne was in Athena one day this week from his homestead ranch in Malheur county. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Knudeson of Dry Creek were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hargett. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Franklin and family of Stateline'were Sunday vis itors at the Geo. Green home. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton spent last week-end at the home of thrir daughter, Mrs. Maurice Frazier, at Milton. Keen entertain ed at dinner Sunday, Mr.' and Mn. Glenn Steen of Milton, and Mrs. Stel la Keen. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Sias are now getting their mail at Sheridan, Ore gon. Their former address was Turn ner, Oregon. , McKenzie Chapter O. E. S. will neet next Wednesday evening. All members are requested by the worthy matron to be present. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Singer came down from Waitsburg last week and visited at the home of their son, Ralph Singer in Athena. Attorney H. I. Watts motored to Canyon City Wednesday where he transacted court business. He was ac companied by Mrs. Watts. On account of inclement weather, members of the Athena Golf club did not attend the all-county tournament at Hermiston, last Sunday. Mrs. Harvey Roseberry entertained Mrs. W. McPherson, Mrs. Dick Swift and Mrs, Ethel Montague at a bridge foursome, Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Lieuallen of Adams, are parents of a daughter, born at St. Anthony's hospital, Pen dleton, Saturday, November 7. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. O. Montague entertained Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mon tague of Tigard, Oregon. Sam and C. E. O. Montague are brothers. Elmer Booher was in town thi3 week from Condon. Mr. Booher came to Athena on business and Mrs. Booher did not accompany him. F. B. Radtke and Herbert Parker left late Saturday for the Deschutes river, where they spent a portion of the week on their last fishing trip of the season. Mrs. E. L. Mitchell and daughter Fredericka who makes their home on Reed and Hawley mountain are vis iting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pittman. Mrs. W. S. Ferguson left this morn ing by motor for Nampa, Idaho, where she will spend several weeks at the home of her daughter Mrs. Horace Belnap. Mrs. Charles May, who has been seriously ill at Ashland for some time, submitted to an operation this past week. Her condition was report ed as favorable. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Elder are con templating moving into Athena for the winter season. They have been residing at the Laurence Pinkerton ranch near town. A number of Athena people attend ed Armistice Day exercises at Walla Walla, where the American Legion Post of that city was in charge of an interesting program. Mrs. Castleman who has been vis iting for the past two weeks at the home of her sister, Mrs. Fred Ker shaw here left Tuesday afternoon for her home at Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Rothrock were Portland visitors this week, where they visited Cecil Smith who is in a hospital in that city. Cecil is a grand son of Mrs. Rothrock. Mr and Mrs. A. H. Cornell and Miss Margaret Fehrenbacher were here from Walla Walla Wednesday and attended the Good-Time Dancing club party in the evening. Charles Mathews returned to Athe na Tuesday from Basket Mountain, where he was employed in harvesting potatoes. When he left the mountain there was a seven-inch snowfall on the level. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Garrett and daughter have moved from the Koep ke ranch to Athena for the winter. They are occupying the Read proper ty sometime ago vacated by the Sing er family, on Third street. Thursday afternoon of last week the members of the Methodist Ladies society repaired to the home of Mrs. Ralph Singer after their meeting, where they were served with refresh ments. Mrs. Crabill assisted Mrs. Singer in serving. Loyal Gleaners class of the Chris tian Sunday school will entertain at a party at the church parlors next Wednesday evening. Members, friends and their husbands will be guests and an evening of clever entertainment and merriment is being planned. The dances given by the Good-Time Dancing club are proving popular and i members and friends are enjoying the privilege of meeting often and living up to the name oi trie organization. The usual Saturday night dance was held and an extra dance was enjoyed the evening of Armistice day. Good sized crowds attended both nights. The W. C. T. U. will meet next Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton. All members are requested to be present as the annual election of officers will be the important event of the meeting. Mrs. Betts will have charge of , the pro gram and is arranging sowj interest ing numbers. Society and Clubs An interesting family reunion was enjoyed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba, when members of the Zerba family met for the first time in many years. Dinner was served at a table centered with pink chrysan themums, and the pink and white color scheme was further accented by the use of tall tapers. The occasion also celebrated two birthdays. Virgil Zerba and Jack Pendleton being the honorees and each being the recipient of a birthday cake. Those enjoying the affair were: Mr. and Mrs. Claude Zerba and family, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Zerba and family of Milton; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Zerba and family of Umapine, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Mum ford and family of Pendleton; Mrs. Pendleton and son Jack of Lakeview, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Zerba and fam ily; Lowell Zerba, Mr. and Mrs. Ern est Zerba of Waitsburg, Miss Edna Zerba and Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba. The Methodist Missionary Society will meet Thursday November 19 at the church. The feature of the meet ing will be the annual parcel post, and all members are especially re quested to be present. A pot luck lunch will be served. The Methodist Ladies Society spent Thursday afternoon of last week quilting at the church. Nineteen were present and following the afternoon's work, they were invited to the home of . Mrs. Ralph Singer, where, with the assistance of Mrs. Crabill, the hostess served refreshments. Those attending were Mrs. John Burke, Mrs. Bruno Weber, Mrs. Charles Henry, Mrs. Ethel Montague, Mrs. James Huggins, Mrs. Frank Little,' Mrs. Fred Pittman, Mrs. William Harden, Mrs. Will Read, Mrs. Amiel Schu bert, Mrs. Crabill, Mrs. Ralph Singer, Mrs. Clarence Hand, Miss Nola Hill, Mrs. Booher, Mrs. Charles McFar- land, Mrs. Laura Froome, Mrs. L. A. Cornell and Mrs. Merritt. The Thimble club of Neighbors of Woodcraft met at the home of Mrs. Arthur Jenkins Tuesday afternoon November 10th. Nineteen ladies were present and the afternoon was spent quilting. Refreshments were served at the tea hour. Those present were Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton, Mrs. John Burke, Mrs. A. J. Garner, Mrs. J. D. Additional guests were, Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton, who won high guest score, Mrs. Lew McNair, Mrs. M. I. Miller and Mrs. Fred Pinkerton. High club score was made by Mrs. Ralph McEwen and Mrs. Glenn Dud ley won second. The club is meeting tonight at the home of Mrs. M. L. Watts. Ohayata and Wauna Campfire groups met yesterday, and under the leadership of Miss Hazel Williamson practiced songs and made plans for a council fire to be held in the near future. The public will be invited to attend the event which will take place in the gymnasium at the high school. Various ranks will be taken by the girls and honors given a detailed pro gram with definite date will be an nounced soon. Wednesday being the occasion of her birthday Mrs. Henry Barrett in vited, Mrs. C. M. Eager, Mrs. Lloyd Michener and Mrs. Ralph McEwen to make up a foursome at contract. Fol lowing the play the hostess served dainty ices cake and confections. Mrs. Barrett was the recipient of a , num ber of attractive gifts. 8 THE BAPTIST CHURCH , Bible school at 10 a. m. Classes for all ages, and a hearty welcome to all. 11 a. m. morning worship. A short talk for the children on "The Story of Bradley." Sermon topic, "Peace." There will be an ex-service following the morning worship for the men. All are especially invited to attend. 6:30 p. m. The B. Y. P. U. will meet for their praise and devotional service. The pastor will take for his topic, "Scattering Abroad." These services are evangelistic, and helpful. Thurs day at 7:30 prayer meeting followed by choir rehearsal v All who would like to help with music are invited to come. Mrs. C M. Eager and Arthur Doug las won high score and Archie Mcln tyre the consolation prize at bridge Tuesday night when the B. B. club was entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Flint Johns near Athena. The usual five tables were in play and the occasion was delightfully inform al. The hostess served delicious mince pie and coffee following the play. Mrs. Forrest Zerba was an additional guest. . The Depression club was entertain ed Saturday night at the home of Garth Pinkerton west of town. Five tables of pinochle and pedro were in play, the games being progressive. Candy was served during the evening Those present were Marjorie. The next meeting will be at the lome of Myrtle Campbell. A group of Athena ladies motored to Pendleton Monday afternoon where they attended a meeting of the drama tic department of the Woman's Club at the. home of Mrs. Roy Raley. About 24 were present and officers were elected for the year. Following the business session the play "The Crim inal Code" by Flavin was read. Dur- ing the year several plays will be given by the group. The Athena mem bers have been asked to present play in the spring. Those from Athe na who attended Monday were: Mrs. C. M. Eager, Mrs. H. I. Watts, Mrs. Ralph McEwen, Mrs. James Cress well, Miss Helen Hansell and Miss Kathleen Radtke. Eighteen members were present at the meeting of the Etude club which occurred Monday night at the home of Mrs. E. F. Bloom. Mrs. Lew McNair was welcomed by the club. A short business session was held followed by chorus practice. The scores for the operetta to be presented by the club this year was placed in the hands of the members, and several choruses re hearsed. The operetta is modern and full of snappy music and though the plot is simple it carries out a clever idea. A social hour was en joyed by the members following ad- excursion!
