S. Ferguson were Walla Walla visitors Tuesday. Henry Keen was hei-e Wednesday from his home in Walla Walla. Edwin Morrison of Umapine was an Athena visitor Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Walker vis ited relatives in Walla Walla, Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. O. Montague and son Clarence were Milton visitors Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Parris and two daughters spent Saturday in Pendleton. Seth Hyatt, well known resident of Weston, was an Athena business vis itor Friday. Miss Merle Best of Pendleton, was a week-end guest of Mrs Randolph Cook, of Helix. Melba Montague spent last week end with Betty . Geiss at the farm south of Athena. Ike Phillips is an Athena visitor this week from Pendleton, coming here Wednesday. Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton, Mrs. Lisle Gray and Mrs. C. M. Eager were in Pendleton Wednesday. Miss Sadie Pambrun of Pendleton spent the week-end at the home of her parents south of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Drew have returned to Pendleton, after spend ing the summer at Portland. Mr. ahH Mrs. Fred Pittman SDent Sunday and Monday visiting relatives on Reed and Hawley mountain. Ernest KoeDke arrived Wednesday evening by motor from his home at Seattle for a two week s visit here. Mr. Sloan, manager of the Wash ington-Idaho Seed corporation trans acted business in Athena Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris spent Labor Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilson in Pendleton. Miss Goldie Miller who has been visiting in Portland returned home Sunday to enter school this week. Miss Jessiedeane Dudley who is employed in Walla Walla spent Labor Day with her parents near Athena. Melvin Coppock and Wilburt Stott went to Portland by airplane Satur day, returning home Monday by train. Mr. and Mrs. Alf Johnson of Wal la Walla spent Sunday in Athena at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Stan ton. Mr. and Mrs. II. M. Hale are en tertaining Mr. Bargar of Browns ville, at their farm home west of Athena. The 0. D. 0. club will hold its first fall meeting at the home of Mrs. Ross Catron, Friday afternoon, Sep tember 18. Mrs. Ethel Montague, Mrs. C. O. Henry. Marjorie Montague and Al- rin Johnson spent Saturday with friends in Pendleton. Mrs. M. M. Johns accompanied her neice, Mrs. Ayers of Wallula, on a visit to relatives at Lyle, Washing ton, over the week-end. James Hod gen is spending several days at Pilot Rock. He will go to Helix about September 20 where he will be employed temporarily. J Miss Hanna of the Malen Burnett School of Music was in Athena Wed-1 nesday to reorganize her music f classes for the coming season. ! The first meeting of the Athena I with Mrs. C. E. 0. Montague and Mrs. Arthur Jenkins as hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Miller and sons Ted and Gene returned Saturday af ternoon from a visit to relatives and friends in Spokane and Seattle. Alva Blalock came to Athena from Pendleton Sunday and spent Labor Day visiting relatives and playing golf on the Pinkerton course here. Word has been received here that Mrs. Martin Hawkins (Ethel Pitt- man) is able to return to her work in Tacoma after several weeks illness. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Watkins and little daughter, Norma June, spent the week-end with friends in Port land, returning home Tuesday morning. Mrs. L. A. Cornell spent last week in Walla Walla where she attended the fair. Saturday she was joined by Mr. Cornell who spent the week end there. Mr. and Mrs. Justin Harwood and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Prestbye- motored to Waitsburg Sunday where they spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hirsch. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke, Sr., are expected to arrive from their home at Glendale, California, the end of this week. They are making the trip by motor. Penn Harris has been suffering with a painfully injured finger. Miss Hilda Dickenson, chief oper ator at the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company in Arlington, spent the week-end and Labor Day visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Leonard in Walla Walla. Will DeFreece is spending his vaca tion visiting at the home of his par ents at Wilbur, Washington. Mrs. Will Kirk accompanied him on the trip, which was made by motor. They left Sunday and will be away about a week. Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Harder and little daughter Mary Jane of La Grande were Athena ' visitors recent ly. They were met here by Mrs. H. L. Berger of Seattle with whom Mary Jane will spend the winter and at tend school. Miss Ellen Henry, who spent a part of the summer at the home of her parents, Mr", and Mrs. C. 0. Henry in Athena, left Friday for Estacada, where she will take up her duties as music supervisor in the schools of that city. Chas. Mays of Portland returned to Athena Saturday night after a week spent at Orofino and other Idaho points where Mr. Mays has business interests. The viistor left for his home in Portland Wednesday, going by motor. , Mrs. E. H. Leonard, Mrs. Margaret Banister, Mrs. Amanda McArthur and Mr. and Mrs. Jack West motored here from the Leonard summer home above Waitsburg, Tuesday, and visit ed at the home' of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Pittman. Mrs. Robert Cutler is spending the week visiting Athena relatives. She came here. from Neskowin where Mr. Cutler is employed on the Roosevelt highway. They expect to be there about 6 months. Yesterday in company with Mrs. E. A. Dudley, she motored to Bingham. Lady members of the Pendleton golf club will be hostesses at a tournament on the Pendleton country club course to the lady golf players of the Walla Walla country club Octo ber 14. For September 23, La Grande, Walla Walla and Pendleton players will participate in a sweepstakes tournament at Pendleton. One of the pillows on display with the Thimble club quilt in the Red and White window was embroidered and made by W. L. Elder who resides with Mrs. Elder at the Laurence Pinkerton ranch near Athena. Mr. Elder con ducted a very successful 4-H club of boys when he lived in Portland. Be side excelling in the usual lines this group won prizes Over girls groups competing. Mr. Elder would be glad to start a 4-H club in Athena. The Thimble Club met Tuesday af ternoon at the home of Mrs. Mary McKay. Members spent the after noon working on a quilt for the host ess, following which refreshments were served. Mrs. McKay was as sisted by Mrs. Celia Harden and Mrs. James Huggins. Those present were, Mrs. W. L. Elder, Mrs. John Stanton, Miss Mildred Stanton, Mrs. Charles Henry, Mrs. Chester McCullough, Mrs. William Harden, Mrs. L. A. Cor nell, Mrs. Clarence Hand, Mrs. James Huggins, Mrs. Matt Johnson, Mrs. A. D. Pinkerton, and Mrs. C. E. 0. Mon tague. Mrs. Henry Gissel who left last week for her home in Brooklyn, New York, was honored Thursday after noon at the home of Mrs. E. B. Fos ter near Athena. A group of friends spent the afternoon informally and at the tea hour the hostess assisted by her daughter Arlene served ices and cake. Those present were Mrs. Gis sel, Mrs. Charles Betts, Mrs. Kohler Betts, Mrs. Arthur Coppock, Mrs. Clarence Tubbs, Mrs. Frank Williams, Jeannie Williams, Mrs. Fred Pittman, Arlene Foster and the hostess. Miss Wilma Mclntyre and Mary Lou Hansell were gracious hostesses Friday afternoon of last week when they entertained nineteen of their young friends at a "dress-up tea," at the Hansell home. The young ladies came attired in the apparel of their elders, and many and varied were the grown-up togs displayed. Owing to the rather embarassing length of the gowns and the height of the shoe heels, entertainment was provided in distinctly sedate and decorous games, and dainty refreshments were served. Miss Marjorie Wilkes received the prize for the best costume. The recent wedding of Miss Mar jorie Wilson and Wilburn Kayser was the incentive for a shower given as a surprise for the young couple, a group of friends invading the Kayser home last evening laden with gifts. After the bride had recovered from her surprise and packages had been opened the evening was spent playing progressive games. Dainty ices and cakes accenting a color scheme of pink and green were served at small tables centered with pink tapers in green holders. Other table appoint ments and favors were in the same shades.
