Dolph Thompson was a business visitor from Gibbon yesterday. Louis Hansen, Jr., of Helix was a business visitor here yesterday. A. C. Knuteson was here from Wes ton Mountain district yesterday. Mrs. Fred Kuns of Lexington vis ited at the Henry Booher home this week. Mrs. II. A. Barrett and daughter Helen were Pendleton visitors Wednesday. Braden Gerking of Ritter, well known here visited Athena friends last week. Claude Harris of Milton visited Athena friends Monday, en route to Pendleton. Mrs. L. A. Cornell and Mrs. Fred Pittman were Pendleton visitors yesterday. J. H. Milligan and family moved into the home of Mrs. Zeltha Mcln tyre Tuesday. Edwin and Ralph McEwen, Jr, spent Sunday at Kooskooskie in the Blue Mountains. Amiel Schubert and Ervin Tucker left yesterday morning on a fishing trip to Ice Lake. Miss Rowena Burke is visiting at the home of her cousin, Dorothy Burke, in Athena. Virginia Eager and Melba Mon tague have recovered from light at tacks of the measles. Louis Bereevin. well known stock man of Squaw creek transacted busi ness in Athena Monday. A number of the Athena young people attended the carnival at Pen dleton Saturday evening. Ferguson and Mrs. Mollie Worthington were Saturday visitors at MacDougal camp. Mr. and Mrs. Will Perkins of Pen dleton spent Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hargett. ' Mrs. Lloyd Ringel and daughter Louise left yesterday for a ten days visit with relatives at Seattle. Mrs. J. D. Huggins who recently underwent an operation at the Pen dleton hospital is doing nicely. Durbin Foster returned to Athena this week after several months spent in the mill at Bend, Oregon. Clark Key of Umapine was an Athena visitor Wednesday. He re ports his crop short of normal. Roland Richards and Fred Singer motored to Walla Walla Tuesday where they transacted business. The Athena Branch library will be closed Saturday afternoon and eve ning in observance of Memorial day. Rev. Dryden will take up bachelor quarters at the Mclntyre residence south of the city near Wild Horse creek. Mrs. M. M. Johns left yesterday for Portland and Vancouver, Wash., where she will spend a week with relatives. A number of Athena people plan to motor to Waitsburg to attend the races in progress there today and tomorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Peterson and two small daughters from near Uma pine spent Monday witn irienas in Athena. Little Miss Maribelle Tate of Pen dleton visited at the home of her grand parents Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wilson. Bert Logsdon, Max Hopper and Jim Cresswell will leave today for a couple of days fishing on the De schutes. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnston are receiving congratulations upon the birth of a son born Sunday morning, May 24. Little Miss Beverley Geissel of Milton is visiting at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Dora Sanchez, this week. Marion Hansell, Arnold Wood and Stafford Hansell motored to the mountains Wednesday where they spent the day. Miss Helen Hansell returned yes terday from Bingham Springs af ter spending the week as the guest of Miss Lucile Winn. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knight who recently returned from Colorado are residing in the Lilla Kirk cottage in the south "part of town. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas will visit relatives at Hermiston, Sunday. Bryce Baker transacted business in Dayton, Wash., Tuesday. Mrs. E. G. Judd of Vancouver who has been visiting friends in Milton is a house guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Zerba. Frank Jackson returned to Athena last week from Portland where he took treatment for his eyes. Very slight improvement is noted. Bert Ramsay returned from Cor- vallis the first of the week after at tending the sessions of the Grand Lodge order of Odd Fellows. Mrs. Lloyd Rmgel and daughter Louise and Mrs. Geo. Green and daughter Georgie were dinner gueats of Mr. and Mrs. F. R Bruce, Tuesday. Neil Cameron, salesman for the International Harvester Co. spent several days this week with the local representatives, Rogers & Goodman. Mrs. Emma Patterson returned to Athena Saturday from a visit with relatives at Lexington. She is visit ing at the Henry Booher home this week. Junior Banister, who has been vis iting at the home of Bern Banister near Umapine paid Athena relatives a visit Wednesday, coming via horse back. John Stanton came home from Con don where he was shearing sheep, re mained over Wednesday, and went on to Montana for several week's work there. Henry Barrett visited the Fred Welch home near Lowden Sunday. He reports much damage to grain in that vicinity due to continued dry weather. Marshal, Leon Miller will enter a Walla Walla hospital to have a brok en bone in his right foot adjusted. For some time the injury has been troubling him. Miss Sadie Pambrun spent Sunday in Spokane with her sister, Mrs. Percy Wilson. Mrs. Wilson who fractured one of her limbs recently is getting along nicely. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Eager and daughter Virginia were Pendleton visitors Sunday, Mrs. E. J. Burchill accompanied them home and is spending the week here. - The Masters and Warden's associa tion will hold a meeting at Pendle ton tonight. The association holds its meetings with the different Ma sonic lodges of, the county. Mrs. Thelma Hodgson and Miss Merle Atkins of Walla Walla were visitors at the F. P. Bruce home, Sunday. Mrs. Hodgson ia the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grove of Gibbon, accompanied by their son and daughter visited the Athena cemetery where they tended a number of graves of family and friends. ' Motorists of this vicinity will be glad to know that tho shoulders of the highway are to be built up and surfaced making a wide smooth road Short detours will be used during the process. Mrs. Ray Hansell who has been ill for several weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hansell here has returned to her home on Wild Horse mountain. Her health is much im proved. Ike Phillips who now makes his home in Pendleton with his son Jim visited Athena friends Monday eve ning. Mr. Phillips is at present em ployed at the Joe Scott ranch west of town. Ralph Bruce proved himself a real fisherman Monday when he caught a fine lot of trout from the Umatilla river and sent them to his mother. One of the fish, a brook trout, meas ured 14 inches. Opening day at Bingham Springs Sunday, was taken advantage of for picnicing by a large number of peo ple. The roads leading to the Springs up the river, are reported to be in good condition. J. Roy Mayson, of the Mayson Overstuffed Furniture Co. of Portland has been in Athena and vicinity this week taking orders for furniture. Mr. Mayson is a brother-in-law of Mrs. G. E. 0. Montague. Miss Glea Sias left yesterday for Winlock, Oregon, where she will vis it friends. Miss Sias will also visit at the home of her sister, Mrs. Thomas Huntington at Fossil, before returning home. , M. I. -Miller, assisted by Kenneth Rogers, is painting his residence on Adams street. "Pike" expects the house to be perked up considerably when he gets through brushing in two coats of paint. A group of friends motoring to Cold Springs Sunday included, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards, "Shrimp" Moore Roland Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kershaw and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McEwen. Mr. and Mrs. John Tompkins and daughter Mary, have moved to their farm home northwest of Athena. Ralph Singer has purchased the Tompkins town residence on Jeffer son street, and will occupy it soon. Bud Davidson, accompanied by his son Roland, and mother-in-law, Mrs. Jack Weir, spent several days in Athena, visiting relatives and friends. Bud left Athena many years ago, and is now a successful farmer in Wash ington. Athena farmers should consider themselves particularly blessed as reports from Condon, Pilot Rock and Heppner state the crops in those dis tricts poor. Sections of land around Helix and Umapine are not up to normal production. Mrs. Fred Kershaw left yesterday for Roseburg where she will visit her daughter Frederica Kershaw who is teaching in the Southern Oregon city. Miss Kershaw will attend the summer session of the University of California at Berkeley. - Almost every day during the past week Athena residents have seen truck loads of race horses being transported to Waitsburg to partici pate in the races there. A finer class of horses than ever before is being used this year. James Hodgen motored to Waits burg yesterday to attend the funeral of his uncle, Free Hodgen, who pass ed away Tuesday at a Walla Walla hospital. He had been seriously sick for some time but hopes had been entertained for his recovery after a steady improvement. Mrs. Glenn Steen of Milton, is giv ing a piano recital at McDowell Hall, Walla Walla, Monday evening, June 1, at 8 o'clock. Mrs. Dave Stone will assist in the recital by singing two groups of songs. At the piano, Mrs. Steen will be heard in numbers com prising three groups. The recital is for the public and Athena friends will be especially welcome. In honor of her birthday, Miss Betty Jane Eager entertained a group of friends at luncheon last Saturday. The young hostess chose a varicolor ed scheme for decoration using a cluster of beautiful blossoms for the center of the prettily appointed table. Covers were placed for nine and were marked by clever pink and yellow baskets in the shape of inverted parasols. The guests spent the af ternoon at bridge, Mrs. Wayne Pitt man making high score and Mary Berlin receiving the consolation.
