Johnson, who suffered a se vere attack of biliousness earlier in the week, is recovering. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley spent last week in Portland where they at tended the horse show. ;' Mrs. Wm. Piper, Sr., was in Athena for a short time Tuesday, en route to her home in Walla Walla. Miss Glea Sias came up from Her miston and spent Sunday at the home of her parents in Athena. Jack Cunningham of the Smythe Barthel Co. of Pendleton transacted business here Wednesday. Mrs. Bowles will entertain a group of friends at luncheon tomorrow at her home in Walla Walla. Mrs. Kilgore of Portland, returned home Monday, after visiting her sis ter, Mrs. W. E. Campbell. Mr. and Mrs. Kohler Betts were week-end guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs. R. D. Blatchford. Mr. and Mrs. Justin Harwood spent Sunday at Freewater where they vis ited Mr. and Mrs. Mark McCoy. - L. A. McClintock, Pendleton mer chant and extensive farmer, trans acted business in Athena Wednesday. The ladies of the Baptist church served dinner to the election board at the school house Tuesday evening. Vic Harris well known resident of Athena will leave shortly for Port land where he will spend the winter months. - George Brace, Thorn Hollow mer chant and Dolph Thompson proprietor of the Gibbon store were Athena vis itors Monday. "' Miss Virginia Eager was a house guest of Betty Geiss at her country home south of Athena several days last week. ' Weston residents who were Athena visitors this week included Mrs. Alex Johnson, Mrs. May English Parks and John Banister. Mrs. C. M. Eager, Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton, Jewell Pinkerton and Mrs, Ralph McEwen were Walla Walla visitors Monday. , Miss Lizzie McKenzie, who former ly resided in the Adams neighbor hood, was here last week from Port' land, visiting friends- Mr. and Mrs. Don Mitchell who spent the past summer at Kennewick will spend the winter rnonths on the Beale place at Pine Creek. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Beryl Hodgen of The Dalles, spent the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. John son. parents of Mrs. Hodgen. Patty, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Mann of Adams, was ser iously burned while playing with a jack-o-lantern on Hallowe'en night. Mrs. Grant Prestbye arrived yes terday morning from her home near Whitefish, 'Montana. She will make an extended visit here with friends and relatives. RICHARDS, Insurance Mr. Dan Tilley was a Walla Walla visitor Wednesday. , The nigh school play is in nightly rehearsal and ceremony of this week will be the burning of manuscripts, so we are assured of its presentation within a few weeks. A feature of the evening's entertainment will be the initial appearance of the glee clubs. Mr. and Mrs. , B. F. Shaw, of Grangeville, Idaho, were guests Sat urday night at the home of Mrs. M. M. Johns, Mr. Shaw is a brother of Mrs. Johns,, and had been with his wife to attend the funeral of her father, Mr. Devine, 88 years old, at Vancouver, Wash. Mrs. Dean Dudley entertained the J. T. Club Friday afternoon. Eight members were present and the guests included Miss Lizzie McKenzie of Portland, Mrs. Ed Stickler of Pendle ton, Mrs. Ralph Cannon of Walla Walla, and Mrs. Star Charlton. At the tea hour the hostess was assisted by Mrs. Frank Sanders. The next meeting will occur November 12th at the home of Mrs. Bert Logsdon. The carnival sponsored by the Adams Ladies' Community Club was a riot of fun and much of a financial success, the tidy1 sum of $83 being realized from sales at the different concessions. The event was largely attended and entertainment provided included many novel stunts. Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Bloom, Miss Cameron and Mr. and Mrs. Harve Roseberry were among the Athena people who attend ed the carnival. ' The ladies of the Baptist church served dinner in , their dining room the evening of election day. .The tables were most , attractive and with roast chicken as the "piece de re sistance" and all the "trimmins," and a good sized crowd of hungry friends and customers, the affair may be counted a real success. About fifty dollars was cleared and the sponsors wish to thank all who in any way assisted. Dr. and Mrs. R. D. Blatchford, Mr. and Mrs. James Cresswell, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Prestbye and Mr. and Mrs. Justin Harwood were dinner guests Monday evening at the home of Dr. and Mrs. R. Rice in Pendleton. Red and white chrysanthenums were used effectively for decoration. At bridge, played following, dinner, Mrs. Rice held high score, the Becond time since beginning of the tournament now in progress. , ... Dinner was served at six-thirty and bridge was played during the evening, Laurence Pink erton and Mrs. .Lloyd Michener held high score and A. A. Mclntyre was awarded the consolation prize. The club will be entertained next Wednes day evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur yougiaa. Mrs. M. M. Johns entertained the Christian Missionary society Wednes rinv afternoon, when eierht members answered to roll call. The meeting was opened by the president, Mrs. Flovd Pinkerton and the devotionals and a varied nroeram were arranged by Mrs. Johns. Papers were read by Mrs. Sias and Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton, and the hostess served tea, assisted hv Mrs. E. A. Venable. 1 The Decem ber meeting' is scheduled to be at the home of Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton. The B. Y. P. U. of the local Bap tist church was" responsible for a most successful Hallowe'en party Saturday night, The reception rooms of the church were beautifully deco rated with festoons of orange and black crepe paper, Helen Lucille Bar rett and Mary Jane Miller being re sponsible for the artistic effects achieved. Robert Lee was chairman of the social committee and with the able assistance of Kohler Betts and others clever eames and stunts were features of the evening's entertain ment. Cider and doughnuts were served. The October meeting of the W, C T. U. was held last Thursday at the home of Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton, with nine members present Mrs. Ida Cowan of Walla Walla., a former president of the local union, was pres ent. Mrs. O. H. He suffered a scalp wound which was dressed by Dr. McKinney. Marion Hansell, John Pinkerton and Arnold Wood spent a successful day fishing Sunday when they motored to the Umatilla river above Bingham Springs. Mrs. Minerva Montague, who made her home in Athena with her son, Ed Montague, for several months, re cently fell and fractured her hip while, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Spaulding, at Eugene. President R. A. Long's address at the recent convention "at Washington, D. C. may be heard at the Christian church next Sunday night.- It will be a strong address by a man of nation al business reputation; Mrs. Henry Koepke, Sr., is ill with a severe cold at her home in Glendale, California. Mr. and Mrs. Koepke, Mrs. Henry Koepke, Jr., and infant son, Henry III, left Athena a couple of weeks ago for California. J. M. Crawford of Walla Walla president of the Tum-A-Lum lumber company, A. M. Gillis and John H. O'Dell also of Walla Walla and audi tor of the same company transacted business in Athena Wednesday. Mrs. M. M. Johns, Mrs. H. I. Watts and Mrs. Ralph McEwen were lunch eon guests Thursday at the home of Mrs. O. O. Stephens and Mrs. A. A. Kimball in Pendleton. Bridge was played during the afternoon. Jim Hodgen returned recently irom a visit to his mother at Redlands, California. The family is nicely situated there and getting along well. Alton and Helen are employed in a drug store and Phyllis is attending business college. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Shick and Mr. and Mrs. Loraine Shick came over from Walla Walla Sunday and spent the day at the home of Mrs. Jane Harden.., Mrs. Hardens stat il l ness remains the same as it has been for the past few months. . Mr. and Mrs. Fred Miller of Spo kane called on Athena friends Sun day, making a short stop en route home from attending the football game in Portland Saturday. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, also of Spokane. The Christian Endeavor convention held at Helix Saturday and Sunday was attended by delegates from all parts of the county, and the sessions were interesting. The Saturday lunch eon was served by the Ladies Aid of the Christian church, in I. O. O. F. hall. The Endeavor banquet was held Saturday evening at Helix Hotel. At the evening service there will be reproduced the opening address of the recent Washington City convention, by Mr. R. A. Long (founder of Longview city.) This was a great address, both broad and stir ring.
