Justin Harwood is engaged in re painting the E. C. Prestbye resi dence, on Fourth street. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Williams and Miss Ruth Williams are spending the week at Bingham Springs. "Pike" Miller is home from the harvest field where he operated Louis Berlin's combine harvester. Mrs. A. H. Mclntyre, Mrs. Fred Pinkerton and Norman ; Mclntyre were in Walla Walla Tuesday. George Drumheller of Walla Wal la, well known farmer and horse man, was in Athena, Tuesday. Miss Blanche and Miss Lois John son spent the week in Portland, going down to the metropolis by motor. . Henry and York Dell left Wednes day morning by motor for Bonners Ferry, Idaho, on a business trip. Miss Helen Huffman is here from Walla Walla, visiting at the home of her parents. Mrs. Orel McPherrin and little son Donald, spent last week with rela tives in Helix. Tom DeFreece and Hugh Graham left , Monday by auto for Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on a business trip. Athena friends were glad to again welcome Miss Hilda Dickenson home from Arlington, over the week-end. Mrs. Roy Johnston and little daugh ter are visitinz at the Geortre Johns ton farm home near Moscow, Idaho. Misses Marjorie ana tsernice wnson visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilson, in Pendleton Tues day. . ' Captain Jim Dunning of the East Oregonian circulation department was in town, Wednesday, looking up new "subs." George Pittman is taking his va cation and has gone to Tacoma, where he is visiting at the home of his sister, Ethel. Mrs. Elizabeth Cockerline, wife of a former Weston druggist, died at the home of her daughter in Temacula, California, July 25. F. L. Koontz who has been serious ly ill at Lexington, is recovering, and his sister, Mrs. Joseph Cannon has returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Joe demons and children left Athena Monday for a week's visit at the home tf Mr. demons' mother, at Albion, Wash ington. . Miss Hortense Baker, formerly of Weston and Athena, who is employ ed in the Montgomery Ward store at Portland, is enjoying her vacation with relatives in Deer Lodge, Montana. A. Duffield and son Curtis will accompany Miss Evelyn Duffield, who has been a guest here at the Duf field home, to Portland. Mrs. Bowles of Walla Walla, who spent several weeks at Seattle, has returned and is visiting at the F. S. LeGrow home in Athena. J. H. Becker, representing the Royaltone talking machine for mo tion picture theatres was in Athena from Portland, Wednesday. Miss Thelma Schrimpf has taken a position 1 as extra operator in the local telephone exchange, Miss Mar jorie Wilson having resigned. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Herr and little son of Portland, are visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stewart. Mr. Herr is a brother of Mrs. Stewart. Water Superintendent Miller has re turned from the harvest field and is again on duty, relieving Billy Pinker ton, much to the relief of Billy. Mrs. L. Sherman will entertain Mr. and Mrs. 0. T. Olsdh who are return ing to their home in California from an automobile tour through the East ern states. Mary Ann Twohy, who has been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Boyd for the past few weeks, returned to her home in Portland, this morning. Mr. and Mrs. Don Wilks and little daughter have returned to Athena to reside from a ranch near Thorn Hol low, where they have been living for several months. Nate McBride, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McBride, was seriously injur ed recently, when he was thrown from the fender of a car he was riding along a mountain road. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kirk and daughter Areta left Athena Wednes day morning on their return to Cres ton, B. C, after a sojourn here of several weeks duration. C. 0. Henry, answering a distress call from the Jacob Booher ranch at Bonners Ferry, left here the fore part of the week to sew sacks for the Booher harvest crew. Rev. M. G. Bentley, former pastor of the First Baptist church of Athena, accompanied by Mrs. Bentley and their daughter, Marie, came over from Freewater and spent Sunday with friends in Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Dudley came down from Bingham Springs Wednesday, and spent the day at the farm home. Wayne Banister and Oral Michener played on the pee-wee golf courses at Pendleton, Tuesday. Mrs. Savannah Knox has graduated from Cheney normal school, and is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Smith, in Athena. Mrs, Knox has not decided where she will teach school this year. The barn on the Phillip Remillard farm south of Athena burned last week, after the structure had been filled with alfalfa hay. It is presum ed that the fire started as the result of the combustion, from the hay be insr dame Bern Banister was in Athena Sat urday evening from his home near Freewater. He was accompanied by his grandson, Junior Banister. Bern ' has a herd of twenty dairy cows and Junior milks three of them morning and evening. The Union Service will occur in the Christian Church Sunday night and will be of a temperance char acter, having to do with the prohibi tion issues of the day. A general in terest will no doubt be manifest in the attendance. The Weston Leader says D. W. "Dad" Sanford is in his eighty.-fifth year, but has been making a hand in the harvest field with the Rich Thompson crew. Weston enters him for the championship as the oldest harvest hand in America. George Banister who went to Port land to receive treatment for stomach trouble, underwent a major surgical operation in one of the hospitals there Monday. Early reports were to the effect that Mr. Banister rallied satisfactorily from the operation. Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Baker accom panied Mr. and Mrs. Litsinger and children to Pasco Sunday, where they took the train for Olympia. Mrs. Litsinger is a sister of Mr. Baker and the family came-here last week from Los Angeles to visit at the Baker home. E. C. Rogers, accompanied by his son Kenneth left Sunday for Creston, B. C, where Dudley Rogers is pre paring to harvest a good crop of wheat from the Rogers holdings on the Creston project. The Rogers fields were not damaged by the over flow waters of early spring. They re turned Wednesday evening. The members of the Athena Bridge club were entertained at the home of Mrs. M. L. Watts Friday afternoon, when four tables were in play. High score was taken by Mrs. H. I. Watts, and low score went to Mrs. C. M. Eager. Mrs. Scott was awarded the guest prise. Punch was served. Weston Leader; Mrs. Alonzo Ules of Athena, formerly Miss Metha King of Weston, was the honoree Tuesday afternoon of an enjoyable stork shower for which Mrs. John McGibbon of Waitsburg and Mrs. M. J. Adklns of Weston were hostesses. The auspicious event took place at the Adkins home, where many friends of the honoree assembled. Ice cream and cake were served. Honoring her sister, Mrs. Scott of California, who is her house guest, Mr. Glenn Dudley entertained de lightfully at her home east of town, Tuesday afternoon, when four tables of bridge were in play. Among the guests were Mrs. Vera Dudley of Dayton, Wash., and Mrs. H. H. Eick hoff of Walla Walla. High score of the afternoon play went to Mrs. II. A. Barrett, low to Mrs. C. M. Ed Harris of Walla Walla is in Athena. He will work : near , town, putting up pea straw. Tom Frazier, former cashier of the Milton National Bank, will go to Portland to locate permanently. Swimming holes in the Umatilla river are popular with local swim mers during the present hot weather. It takes twenty-two mechanical milkers to handle the product of part of the dairy herds on the Hermiston project. Guy W. Brace, former superintend ent of the Weston schools, will teach this year in the junior high school at Yakima. A considerable amount of road work in the Columbia district at Hermiston is to be undertaken soon by the coun ty court. Mountain camps and resorts are well populated at this time by visitors who are seeking relief from the con tinued hot weather spell. Queen Lois, her attendants and President Collins of the Pendleton Round-Up will attend the American Legion banquet at Baker. George Green came in from Bon ners Ferry country, where he has been tending a band of sheep 'on the range there since early spring. , A number of Athena farmers at tended the Pendleton farmers meet ing Saturday, and heard the address of Alexander Legge and other speak ers.' . Mrs. H. E. Dow returned home Thursday of last week after an ex tended visit with her mother and sis ter and other relatives at Edmonton, Alberta. F. S. LeGrow left Tuesday morning for his stock ranch near Phillipsberg, Montana. He went by automobile and was accompanied on the trip by John Rothrock. Mrs. Lew McNair, who underwent a surgical operation at Walla Walla recently, returned, to her home in Athena Wednesday evening, and is recovering. Prune shipments will not be made in quantity from the Milton-Free-water orchards until Monday of next week, on account of the fruit not be ing sufficiently ripe. Surveyors are at work on the right- of-way extension of the WaylanoV Waterman market road. It is report ed that construction work will begin there in a short time. Glenn Dudley was in Pendleton Wednesday where he attended the luncheon given in honor of a dis, tinguished guest, Dr. Spears; Uni versity of Oregon football coach. Dean Dudley has been slicking up a riding horse for Willard Bond to ride at the Round-Up. The horse is one that Willard has ridden at several Round-Ups, and suits him to a "T." Ed Montague contemplates going to Eugene where he will spend a few days with relatives. His son Clarence will accompany him home. The boy has spent the summer near Eugene. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Carry are on the Barrett Pine Creek ranch, where Mr. Carry is cultivating summer- fallow. He harvested with the Read Barrett and the McEwen crews this season. Rich Thompson returned Wednes day evening from Portland. He re ports his brother James Thompson, who has been seriously ill with pneu monia in a hospital there, to be slight ly improved, :, Ad Pinkerton and Max Johnson re cently spent a day fishing on the Umatilla river. Ad reports that plenty of trout to cover the frying pan were caught and that Max ate one big meal, but no more. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kilgore, Artie and Emma Jane are visiting relatives in Walla Walla. During the absence of Mr. and Mrs. Kilgore, the cafe is being operated by Mrs. Robert Cut ler and Oral Michener. Mrs. Chase Garfield and little daughters have returned home from Bingham Springs where they spent several days at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton. Frank Lockwood well known to old timers in this section was in the city yesterday from Walla Walla. He re cently returned from a trip into Wal lowa county, where he was success ful in catching seVeral creels of nice trout. Miss Gracia Haggerty of Union is a house guest this week of Miss Jes siedeane Dudley. Wednesday, Miss Haggerty was accompaied to Bing ham Springs by Miss Dudley, Miss Helen Hansell, Miss Alberta Charl ton and Miss Kathleen Radtke. D. LeGrandc Cherry of Hermiston was an Athena visitor yesterday. Mr. Cherry has been in the life insurance business since leaving the Hermiston high school, where he was superin tendent He will be superintendent of the Condon high school this year. Laurence Pinkerton came down from his cottage at Bingham Springs yesterday seeking more grub for the camp larder. Mr. Hills is entomologist at the Hermiston experiment station, and while here made a tour of the bean fields adjacent to Athena, for the purpose of investigating inifcct in tested plants. . . Alterations and interior decoration of the M. I. Miller home is under" way. Henry Schroeder and Mr. Miller are doing the work. . The home of Miss Lenore McNair was the scene of a most pleasant function last Friday night, when with the assistance of Miss Frederica Ker shaw, she entertained a group of friends, honoring Miss Blanche John son, who is soon to become a bride. The cozy rooms were tastefully deco rated in old-fashioned flowers of various hues, giving a festive tone to the occasion. Soon after the arrival of the guests, a small maid, Donna Jean Logsdon, pushing a well-laden wheelbarrow, advanced into the room, presenting the contents, consisting of a bridal shower to the bride to be. Numerous and beautiful gifts were unloaded from the primitive carrier by Miss Johnson. During the eve ning three tables were in play at bridge and at a late hour, an elabo rate luncheon was served. The guests were: Mrs. Donald Johnson, Mrs. W. A. Ball, Mrs. Armond deMerritt, Misses Blanche Johnson, Lois John son, Jessiedeane Dudley, Kathleen Radtke, Helen Hansell, Lois Mclntyre, Edna DeFreece, Phyllis Dickenson, and Frederica Kershaw and Lenore McNair, the hostesses.
