Sharp and son Laurence were in Pendleton, Wednesday. J. A. Fee, veteran Pendleton at torney, was an Athena visitor Wed nesday. Roberta and Rose Marie Cannon were recent viistors at the A. M. Ross home in Weston. Mrs. John Stanton and daughter, Mildred, were visitors at the Joe Key home in Weston. The condition of Roy Cannon is re ported to be improving, his friends will be pleased to learn. George Corder, elderly citizen whose" health has been declining, is further afflicted with a troublesome and pain, ful carbuncle. Fred Pittman caught the limit -of trout in the Umatilla river Sunday, "Crawfish and grasshoppers did it," reporteth Fred. Donald R. Johnson and Miss Laur etta McCorkell of Weston, were mar ried in Walla Walla Tuesday after noon by Justice of the Peace Wilbur. Reta May Hansell, who has been visiting at the home of her uncle, M. W. Hansell for several weeks, will leave soon for home at Oregon City.-. ' Henry McElroy, of Wallowa, was in Athena Tuesday visiting friends. Mr. McElroy, who was formerly a resident of this vicinity, was on his way to Walla Walla. . , The two grandchildern of Mrs. Joe Sheard, whom she kept while their parents, Mr. and Mrs. McDowell of LaGrande were in the East, have re turned to their home. Dr. and Mrs. B. Blatchford of Salem, and Mrs. C. J. Gillette of Marshfield were visitors over the week-end at the home of their son and brother, Dr. R. D. Blatchford. Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton and Bonnie Johnson in company with their guests Mr. and Mrs. James Nelson of Cali fornia, spent last week at Bingham Springs guests of the Arthur Rigby's. Mrs. Robert Raymond arrived in Athena Saturday from her home in Heppner and is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cass Cannon and broth er, Roy Cannon who is ill, but some improved. Tomatoes are not coming in as fast as shippers and retailers expected. The crop, is said to have been af fected by cold weather at the time transplanting were made in tomato growing districts. Mr. and Mrs. 0. E. Bowman and two little daughters Thelma Jean and Virginia, left Friday morning for their home in Portland after several weeks visiting at the W. J. Kirk home. The ladies are sisters. Jens Jensen and Henry Miller had fair success fishing in the little Salmon river the fore part of the week. They report a new trail, which is much easier to navigate than the former one, being built by forest rangers. - Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Radtke were in the Blue Mountains for the day, Sun day. They found but few huckle berries. Contrary to previous reports there will be a small crop of berries this season, as the result of a devest ing frost sometime ago. Mr. and Mrs. C. L, McFadden and children who were visitors here from Portland, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Prest bye, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Harwood, Mr. and Mrs. Max Hopper and children, Mr. and Mrs. James Lieuallen and son and Leonard Geissel picniced at Walla Walla Sunday. The Athena bridge club was enter tained at the B. B. Richards home last Friday. Three tables of bridge were at play, with two guests pres ent, Mrs. A. R. Scott who is visiting her sister Mrs. Glen Dudley, from California and Mrs. Lew McNair. Mrs. Scott received guest prize and Mrs. M. L. Watts received high club score. The Press family are grateful re cipients of a fine boquet of gladioli from Arleen Foster. They were grown at the Foster country home south of Athena and the petals in coloring and variety are among the most per fect and beautiful of any grown in the community this year, a season which seems especially favorable for gladioli culture. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. McFadden and children came from their home at Portland, Saturday. .Mr. McFadden returned to Portland Monday, Mrs. McFadden and children remaining for a visit with relatives and friends in Athena and Weston. Raymond Mc Fadden who was injured several weeks in Portland when struck by an automobile, has about fully recover ed from the minor injuries sustained. Mrs. H. A. Barrett entertained fifteen little girls on her lawn last Friday afternoon from four p. .n. un til seven p. m. in honor of her young est daughter, Beverley's tenth birth day. Out door games were enjoyed. At 6:30 dainty refreshments were served and a very attractive birthday cake was the main attraction. The cake was tastefully and uniquely covered with 10 candles and animal cookies iced in pastel colors. Announcing the approaching mar riage of her sister, Blanche, Miss Lois Johnson entertained at her home Saturday evening with a bridge party at which three tables were in play. Dainty corsage boqucts of sweet peas were presented the guests, and the tally cards cleverly depicted the coming wedding in an old-fashioned tintype picture in water colors, the bride labled "Blanche." and (he groom "Beryl." Guests included the following: Mesdames Armond DeMer ritt, Donald Johnson; Misses Blanche Johnson, Helen Hansell, Edna De Freece, Phyllis Dickenson, Jessie deane Dudley, Lenore McNair, Kath leen Radtke, Alberta Charlton, Fred erica Kershaw and Lois Mclntyre. I. Miller. H. H. Eickhoff of the EickhofT Farm Products corporation, was in town from Walla Walla, yesterday. Mrs. Lew McNair is in a Walla Walla hospital where she underwent a surgical operation Wednesday. Mrs. Olney Simpson, well known to Athena and Adams people, suffered a stroke of paralysis while at Bingham Springs, Sunday. .. : . ,., Complaint is heard regarding scarcity of water on a number of farms and stock ranches in the south part of the county. ' Mrs. Sims Dickenson and daugh ter, Mrs. Henry Knight and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Claude Dickenson were in Pendleton, Wednesday. Rev. H. E. Dow who is ill at his home here shows no material im provement and a second blood trans fusion may be necessary. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knight will return to Colorado, after the harvest season, to reside. Henry is employ ed at the Farmers Elevator. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wilson of The Dalles were Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wilson. Lee Wilson is a nephew of R. L. Eldon Myrick who intends entering Whitman college this fall, went over to Walla Walla yesterday to see about his scholarship arrangements. Fire destroyed a combine harvester on the 'farm of H. C. Rothrock, west of Adams Saturday morning. The caterpillar was not damaged and no standing gram was destroyed. Will Campbell has been engaged in delivering prpduce to dealers in near by towns. He disposed of a good crop of early cabbage and is now getting rid of his supply of summer onions. W. T. Corder and son of Tacoma are spending the week-end at the Geo. Corder home here. . George is W. T. Corders father and it has been many years since the two have been together, i ., ; . . Miss Edna Thompson of McCloud Alberta, who has been a visitor at the J. W. Pinkerton home left Thurs day morning for Pasco, where she will spend a short time visiting rela tives. ' The Ralph McEwen harvest crew is having quite a long run this season. After harvesting the McEwen crop on the Wagner place, the machine will have a longer run, threshing outside grain. The loganberries grown on the Heath ranch in the mountains east of Athena are finding' favor with buyers who are furnishing their own crates and picking the fruit, at $1 per crate. ' Mr. and Mrs. John Winn are en tertaining their daughter, Mrs. J. B. Stone, at their Bingham Springs sum mer home. Mrs. Stone arrived re county from her home at Berkeley, California. ' , Fred Koohtz, brother of Mrs. J. E. Cannon, who has been seriously ill at his home in Heppner, is reported to be improving. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon were called to Heppner last week, on account of his illness. Mrs. C. M. Eager and daughters Betty and Virginia left Wednesday morning for Dayton, Wash., where they will spend the remainder of the week visiting Mr. Eager's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Eager. Mrs. E. C. Rogers has at the pres ent time roses in full bloom, which would vie for beauty with those that have made Portland famous. Culture of other flowers in the Rogers garden has been much of a success this sea son. ; Mrs. Charles Schatz of Adams, who has been attending summer school at the Eastern Oregon Normal school has returned home. Mrs. Schatz will have charge of the seventh and eighth grades in the Adams school this year. Tom DeFreece who has been in ill health for some time, was able to come over from his home near Walla Walls Wednesday, and visit for a short time at the home of his daugh ter, Mrs. Sims Dickenson. , Ed Worsham, uncle of Ralph Sing er, was a visitor at the Singer home in Athena. Monday. Mr. Worsham, whose home is in Berkeley, California, formerly lived at Waitsburg, and had not been at that place for 38 years, previous to his visit there last week. A number of young people from Athena, Adams, Milton and Helix at tended a meeting of the , Columbia Union Christian Endeavor society at the Presbyterian church, in Pendleton Friday evening.' The Union will hold a party at the Christian church in Milton, September 13. A party was given yesterday after noon by Mrs. M. W. Hansell in honor of her neice, Rita Mae Hansell of Ore eon City, who has been a house guest at the Hansell home for several weeks. A party of nine girls were present and enjoyed play, supervised by Miss Helen Hansell and Miss Kathleen Radtke. Refreshments were served at the close of the afternoon. A family reunion was held at the W. J. Crabill home in Athena, Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Olin McPheron and children of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Ray O'Harra and Mr. and Mrs. Bud Crabill of Pendleton, and Sidney Crabill of Helix, Grandma Sleeman and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Take one half cupful of sugar, one and one-half cupfuls of water, two tablespoon fuls of red cinnamon drops, one lemon thinly sliced, two tablespoon- fuls of quick cooking tapioca, four large apples cored and pared. Combine the sugar, lemon and cinnamon drops and cook until the candy Is dissolved. Add the apples and cook, turning often udUI they are tender. Remove the apples and meas ure the sirup, adding enough water to make a cupful. Add the tapioca and cook In a double boiler for fifteen minutes, stirring and cooking until the tapioca is clear.' ' Remove from the fire and add one tablespoonful of lemon Juice. Fill the apples to over flowing with the tapioca. Chill and serve with sweetened whipped cream. Burned 8ugar Cake. Brown one half cupful of sugar until it smokes, add. one-half cupful of water, boll to make a sirup. Take ,three-f ourtlis cupful of shortening, ope and one-half cupful of sugar, one cupful of cold water, salt, one teaspoouful of soda, two well beateu eggs, vanilla and three cupfuls of flour. Cream the shortening, add the sugar, sift the coda with the flour and combine as usual. - . Frootlng. Take two-thirds of a cup ful of cream, one-fourth pound of but ter, two cupfuls of sugar. - Brown two tablespoonfuls of the sugar and add to the cream, butter and remaining sugar. Boll to the soft ball stage, cool and beat until thick. , Lemon Gelatin 6aUd. Tul;e five new carrots, grute, add one full cup ful of finely diced tender celery, a dash of lemon juice. Take a package of lemon gelatin, add the Juice from the can of pineapple with enough boil ing water to make a pint of liquid. Stir until slightly cool, then add the other Ingredients, fold nnd serve un molded on lettuce with a nicely sea soned salad dressing, . - s ?
