N. Johns visited with friends in Walla Walla, Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Wilson of Pen dleton visited relatives in Athena Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift were in Union county last week, returning home Sunday. The W. C. T. U. will meet at the home of Mrs. Jesse Gordon next Tues day afternoon. Clarence Montague is with relatives at Pall Creek, Oregon, for the sum mer vacation period. C. C. Curl, chairman of the re publican county central committee was in Athena Tuesday. Athena fishermen who were on the Umatilla Sunday, report poor con ditions and few fish caught. Fred Blatchford, brother of Dr. R. D. Blatchford is here from Salem visiting at the Blatchford home. Milton Mitchell, Jack Marquson and Francis Huffman are haying on the Alex Mclntyre ranch this week. Mrs, Mima Kir kl and, who resides at the home of her sister, Mrs. San ders, is in Portland, visiting friends. Wilbur , Fisk Brock, former news paper man, now a Sommerville farm er, visited friends in Athena Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Steen of Mil ton, have been visiting at the home of Mrs. Stella Keen, mother of Mrs Steen. ; Walter Adams was in town Mon day from his sheep range on the brakes of the Umatilla near Bingham Springs. Mrs. A. M. Johnson, after spending a week at the home of her Bister Mrs. Saulsberry, at Bryn Mawr, Wash., is home. J. E. Jones returned to his duties on the rural mail route Monday, af ter spending a two weeks vacation in Southern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Taylor and children were at Union last Satur day, where they attended the stock show and races. Ed Montague was in Walla Walla the fore part of the week, where he received treatment for a serious at tack of lumbago. Alberta Charlton, Lenore McNair and Kathleen Radtke are home from University of Oregon. They motor ed up from Eugene. Mrs. C. T. Smith returned home Sunday, after visiting for several days with her daughter, Mrs. Don Wilks, at Thorn Hollow. Herbert Parker drove over to the Umatilla river Tuesday evening and creeled three fine, big trout, about the finest seen in Athena this spring. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stamper' of Camas, Wash., arrived here Tuesday and visited at the home of Mrs. George Myrick, sister of Mrs. Stamp- teaching in the Estacada schools for several years, is at LaGrande, where she will : attend summer Normal school. Mrs. D. H. Sanders has returno l to her home in Athena, after . visiting her son Claud in Portland, and her daughter, Mrs. Robert Norris, at Medford. Mrs. Raloh McEwen has gone to the ranch to cook for the crew, com prising her husband and two sone. She will be at the ranch a part of the time during the summer. D. B. Mr. and Mrs. Rabh Singer and sons Fred and Walter are home from trin to California. They visited frionria at Santa Rosa. San Francisco and other points of interest in the golden state. Mrs. Roy RusseU who has been seriously ill for the past two weeks at her home west of Athena, is now improving. For a time it was fear ed a surcrical operation would be necessary for her recovery. Miss Dorothy Berlin will attend summer school at University of Washington, before coming to her home in Athena for a short vacation. Miss Berlin taught in the Kosiyn, Wash., high school the past year. Mi. unA Mrs. Phillio DeFhillips have returned to their home in Sac ramento after visiting at the home 01 Mrs. Minnie DePeatt. They went from here to Seattle to visit friends, before proceeding on to Sacramento. Leonard Geisscl. who has been con fined to his home with lameness in his feet, is improving. Miss Arleen My rick and Miss Mildred Watkins, sis ter of the proprietor, are assisting at Watkins Tharmacy during Leonard's absence. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph N. Scott and children have returned to Corvallis after being at their farm west of Athona for some time. They were ac companied as far as Portland, by Til Stone, who will visit relatives in the WUlajueU Valley. . Henry Keen was in town Tuesday. Miss Edna DeFreece was a week end guest of Miss Hilda Dickenson at Arlington. Mr. apd Mrs. Justin Harwood and Mrs. Will Kirk were in Walla Walla Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Mansfield of Pendleton visited their daughter Mrs. A. W. Logsdon and family Sunday. . Frank DeFreece entertained his son Roy at dinner Sunday in honor of the latter's birthday anniversary. De Freece home near Walla Walla, Wed nesday. Miss Lois Mclntyre who is employ ed in Pendleton spent the week-end with her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Mclntyre. Mr. and Mrs. C. 0. Whiteman and daughter Betty and son Jack of Wal la Walla, spent Saturday at the B. B. Richards home. Bryan and Paul Kibbey returned Tuesday evening after spending two weeks visiting - relatives . in Portland and two days at Newport. . Mrs. Lillian Kenworthy and two small sons of Spokane, arrived in Athena Tuesday evening and are vis itors at the G. R. Gerking home. ' Amiel Schubert returned home Sun day from Portland, where he has been for several weeks, on account of the illness of his wife and daughter. The condition of Mrs. Barbara Willaby, who has been ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Kershaw is reported to be slightly improved. Mrs. Wellman , Ball assisted Mrs. W. E. Fergus of Pendleton in enter taining at a bridge party at the lat ter's home in Pendleton, Monday eve ning. Miss Barbara Castleman, of Ontario, arrived in Athena Friday from Uni versity of Washington, accompanied by her mother. They are at the Fred Kershaw home. Mrs. Wm. Worthington who was recently operated on at Walla Wal la, is improving satisfactorily and will soon be,,able to return to her home in Athena. Miss Jessiedeane Dudley, Kathleen Radtke. Helen Hansell and Alberta Charlton went to Bingham Springs Wednesday to be guests at the E. A. Dudley summer home. Miss Carolyn Kidder and Mrs. E. H. Leonard of Waitsburg, accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Jack West, who were here from Butte, Montana, on an automobile trip to Klamath Falls. Beryl Hodgen, athletic coach at The Dalles high school, will leave Mon day for Eugene where he will take the summer football coaching course under Dr. Spears athletic director at University of Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirk came down from Creston, B. C, last week and Mr. Kirk has found employment on the Berlin ranch, northwest of Athe na. They will remain until after har vest and then return to their homi? on the Creston project. Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Read and Mr. and Mrs. Velton Read accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Allison Wood to Port land Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Velton Read returned and the two former re mained at the Wood home. Mrs. John Stackley and children of Longview, Wash., are at thi Bern Banister home near Freewater for an extended visit. Mr. Stackley who ac companied them to the Banister home, has returned to Longview. Mrs. Nellie Taylor came over from Walla Walla Wednesday and visited at the Sheldon Taylor home west of the city. Mrs. Taylor will be a guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley for several days at Bingham Springs. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Gorman, old time residents of Athena, were in the city Wednesday from Portland. Mr. Gorman, when Athena was Center ville, conducted an agricultural im plement warehouse on the , site where the postoffice building now stands. A party of friends including Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Garner, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Keen, Mrs. Stella Keen, Mrs. J. F. Haines and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Steen spent Sunday at Thorn Hollow where a picnic lunch was enjoyed. Mrs. Bryce Baker and mother, Mrs. Jennie Gross returned . last week from Kalispell, Montana, after a most enjoyable ten days spent with Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Prestbye and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Brower. Various trips to most interesting points in that vicinity were visited during their stay. At a recent meeting of Mignonette Rebekah lodge nominations for of ficers for the ensuing six months were made: Noble Grand, Sadie Pambrun; vice-grand, Edna McTn tyre; recording secretary, Lois Smith. During the social session refresh ments were served by Mrs. Celia Har den, Mrs. Katie McCullough and Miss Virgie Moore. The regular monthly church meet ing was held in the Christian church basement Wednesday evening with a goodly number present. After din ner was served the following program was rendered: a debate, "Why it was easier to live a Christian in our grandparents day than today," G. R. Gerking and Rev. Sias furnishing the argument. Musical reading, "I be lieve it," Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton; short talk on "The accomplishment of our Sunday school contest, now in pro gress," Mrs. L. R. Pinkerton; solo, "Invy," Mrs. L. Michener.
