Press Paragraphs "Tna for Three" just laugh Standard Theatre, tomarrow night. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton and daughter spent Sunday in Mil ton. Mrs. Bert Ramsay has returned to Athena after visiting relatives in Portland. . Mrs. M. M. Johns has spent the past week at the F. N. Johns home, west of town. Miss Evelyn Bragg of Portland is a visitor at the Glenn Dudley home east of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Bailey of Baker. Oregon, are guests at the Frank Chamberlain home. Mrs. Mae Cowan and Margerette Moore spent the week end in Walla Walla, visiting relatives. Mrs. Minnie Willaby has been ill at her home for the past week, but is able to be out again. A number of Athena's younger set attended the Hodgen reunion held at the State Line New Years Eve. Will Campbell came up from the ranch, and spent the holidays at the home of his parents, near town. The third of the club dances was held at the Legion Hall Saturday night. All reported a good time. Mr. E. C. Prestbye and Dr. J. L. Geyer were dinner guests Monday evening at the H. I. Watts home. Harold Kirk returned to Portland Tuesday after a fortnight spent with his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kirk. Mrs. Lyman Cooley returned to her home in Portland Thursday after a few days visit with her mother in this city. Mr. and Mrs. William McBride of Portland were week-end visitors at the Arnold Wood home, west of town. Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Stone and son Till, were guests of relatives at Walla Walla during the fore part of the week. Beryl Hodgen spent a few days in Athena from U. of 0. after a trip to Houthern California with the football squad. Mrs. Henry Wood, who last week was taken to St. Anthony hospital at Pendleton, is reported to be im proving. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Shick of Walla Walla were in Athena Monday at tending the funeral of Mr. .Shirk's grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Miller and sons returned to Athena Sunday utter a week spent in the vicinity of Endi- cott, Washington. Mignonette Rebcckah Lodge will hold installation next Tuesday, January 10. All members are re quested to be present. Mr. 11 iid Mrs. R. E. Burke returned to their home in Portland last Saturday after a week spent in Athena visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Gray and family are soon to be residing near Athena, being employed on one of the Arthur Douglas farms west of town. Mr. and Mrs. Clair Geurney of Haines, Oregon who were visitors over the holidays at the Littlejohn home returned home Saturday. Mrs. Alva Mlalotk and children ar rived from Spokane Tuesday evening, to visit for a time at the Lawrence Pnikcrton home, north of town. Mr. and Mrs. Clason Adams of Palo Alto, California who have been visitors in Athena for the past two weeks, left for their home Monday. Dorothy Giessel visited in Milton a few days during the vacation. She was also a week-end visitor in Pendleton. "Service for Ladies" Standard Theatre, Sunday Night. Miss Frederica Kershaw spent a protion of her vacation in Portland returning to her home in Athena, Sunday, departing for her school in Ontario Monday. The Etude Club met Thursday with Mrs. Bryce Baker. A New Year's program was carried out by members sponsored by Mrs. Floyd and Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton. J. E. Jones, rural mail carrier, has had a deal of a time making his route this week on account of the bad condition of the roads. However, Jim has managed somehow to get through, and he didn't resort to mule power, either. Aaron Douglas has been confined to his home this week with un attack of influenza. . Mrs. Barbara Willaby has been ill this week at the home of her daugh ter, Mrs. J. F. Kershaw. A heavy layer of ice and snow which covers Main street, interferes greatly with automobile traffic. Mrs. R. A. Thompson entertained the local Missionary Society of the Christian church at her home, Wednesday afternoon. Flint Johns was seriously injured Tuesday, when a knife he was using cut one of his eyes. It is not thought the sight of the eye will be permanently injured. Jim, the Chinese cook at the Athena Hotel, has been remembering his friends with generous gifts of chinese nuts, silk handkerchiefs, etc., in true Christmas spirit. Mr. and Mrs. Ortis D. Harris of Everett, Washington, are in the city visiting Mrs. DePeatt. Mr. Harris came over to officiate at the funeral of Higby Harris, who died at Milton. It is reported that owing to a smallpox epidemic at Weston, public gatherings have been prohibited temporarily, as a precautionary measure against spreading the dis ease.. Miss Alberta Charlton entertained about twenty of the younger set Wednesday evening with a sleighing and taboggan party. At a late hour, sandwiches, cakes and coffee were served. All present declare a delight ful evening. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stewart and family returned from Portland after spending the holidays in that city visiting friends and relatives. They report Mrs. Herr as in very poor health not having gained as she should following a major operation sometime ago. Mrs. Elmer Stockstill entertained a few friends Wednesday evening as a surprise to her husband, celebrat ing his birthday. Games and cards were the diversion of the evening. At a late hour covers for eight were laid and a dainty lunch was served by the hostess. Guests were: Mrs. Rose Miller, Mrs. Ora Smith, Miss Dorothy Geissel, William Dickson, Ben Bennifield, Thena Russell, the honoree and hostess. Mrs. Ada Stamper, who was in jured in an automobile accident Christmas evening, died as a result of the injuries Wednesday morning at St. Anthony's hospital in Pendle ton. The deceased was the widow of the late Doc Stamper, and came to Athena from Weston to reside, shortly after her husband's death. She was fomerly Ada Hopper. Two young sons and a baby daughter sur vive, also two brothers and one sister, and her mother. High School Notes 1 Junior News Staff. Student Body Thursday afternoon, December 22, the high school students enjoyed a Christmas party in the study hall. George Gross furnished the tree which was decorated by Dorothy Geissel and Kathleen Radtke. Helen Hansell and Jessiedeane Dudley took charge of the party and called off the number and names of the gifts, Each student had to open his pack age and show it to the student body. After all gifts were distributed Mr, and Mrs. Meyer presented a large box of candy to the student body and faculty. Faculty The teachers who spent their vacation away from Athena were Mr. and Mrs. Toole went to Port land; Miss Bateman went to Milton; Miss Brodie visited in Eugene and Pullman; Mr. Miller and family went to Endicott; Miss Sellars spent the vacation at her home in Spokane; Miss Porter and Mrs. Rominger went to Freewater. Mr. Fredericks did not arrive until ten o'clock Tuesday morning. Train service was held up by the deep snow in Washington. Superintendent Lee A. Meyer and family remained in Athena during the holidays. Alumni Harold Kirk returned Monday to Hills Military Academy. Dorothy and Margaret Lee have returned to Cheney Normal School. Belle Anderson has returned ; to Linfield College. Phyllis Dickison and Roma Charl ton left Monday for Valsetz, Oregon, where they will de their practice teaching work. ; Granville Cannon has returned to his studies at 0. A. C. Beryl Hodgen, Blanche and Lois Johnson, "Scotty" Kretzer, Fred Radtke, Dale Stephens, and Ray Dud ley returned to the University of Oregon after a vacation spent tt their homes. Norman Mclntyre left Monday to enter Whitman College at Walla Walla. Dean Pinkerton returned to Walla Walla Business College. Dorsey Kretzer visited in Athena and Milton during the holidays:.
