Although the schools are putting forth every effort possible to make that education the best ob tainable, yet the schools will be bad ly handicapped if there is a lack of mutual understanding and coopera tion between the parent and the school. Therefore we are setting forth below a few observations which seem timely and which we most earnestly request every school patron to read. (a) A ruling of the State Board of Education says: "In order that a school may be accredited as a Stan dard school it must have a record of attendance for the year of not less than 92 per cent, and tardiness must not exceed 2 per cent. This means that if the Athena schools fall be low these requirements, the credits earned in Athena by your children will not be accepted by other Stan dard schools elsewhere, nor will they be accepted by colleges and universi ties as entrance requirements. This would be a dire calamity to our youth. Hence, it is necessary for the school administration, for the pro tection of the children and the good name of the community, to devise ways and means for reducing a rap idly mounting record for absence and tardiness, especially in the high school. The tardiness in the high school is limited almost entirely to those who live within a few blocks of the building. Excuses are mostly "Our clock was slow," "Our clock stopped," "Overslept," or merely "Excuse my child as he was tardy." It is gen erally admitted that such accidents will happen once in a great while in the most vigilant families; but the first instance should cause par ents who wish to cooperate in the education of their children, to guard faithfully against its recurrence. In view of the foregoing the schools are asking the parents to help in train ing the children in habits of punctu ality. In the event that such help is not given, the schools are left with reoourse only to the rather un satisfactory, but necessary process of inflicting severe penalties for repeat ed cases of tardiness, except where it can be shown to have arisen from strong necessity. (b) Absence from such causes as attendance at football games, or social functions, for visiting, hunting etc., will have to be considered by the school as "unexcused" absences, which means that the pupil will re ceive no grade for that day in all classes missedi without opportunity for making up the grade. ' A few "unexcused absences" mean a consid erable lowering of the grade, per haps even failure, and certainly a loss of education that cannot be re covered. We assure to the patrons of the Athena schools every cooperation we can give in making their schools equal to the best anywhere and ev erywhere, and earnestly solicit a like cooperation from the parents of LEE A. MEYER, Superintendent. 31 Years Ago October 16, 1896 Farmers as a rule are through seeding and much of the grain is up and looking fine. T. J. Kirk and Sam Purdy were in Pendleton Saturday. Fred Williams reports an except ional good run the past season with his threshing machine. In 39 days his machine turned out in good shape, 35,580 sacks of wheat an average of 912 sacks per day for the season's run. This was done with a 32 inch machine. The other evening as William Wells was returning from Pendle ton a fellow grasped the horse bits with the intention of stopping the conveyance! A few well directed blows from a whip in Billy's hands, caused the fellow to change his mind in regard to stopping the team. A well known Athenaite wants to bet that Bryan will carry the fol lowing states, and offers to bet on each state, respectively: On Ore gon $20; on Washington, $20; on California 20; on Missouri, $60. All states to be taken er no bet. W. II. Scott, the Helix farmer, was in town Tuesday, on his way home from Walla Walla. Mr. Scott was in the Garden City for the purpose of negotiating a sale of his wheat crop. He sold for 50c per bushel. Uncle "Billy" Willaby and wife have returned from their visit to Newport, Idaho. Mr. Willaby re ports fine sport hunting and fish ing. L. L. Montague added a new hack and a new buggy to the equipment of the Commercial Livery Stable this week. Sportsmen are now enjoying them selves trolling for salmon and shoot ing ducks at Wallowa. A Walla Wal- ;la man hooked and landed a 28 'k pound salmon last Sunday. War occured in the Chinese quart ter of this city Tuesday night. Gambling was at the bottom of it all. Joe Lee, the washee man was worsted in a scrap with another Mongolian. R. L. Maloney has been acting as postmaster this week during the ab senc of Post-master J. W. Maloney, who is in Portland, attending the meeting of the Grand Lodge, K. of P. Sometime during Saturday night a thief entered the barn at the Rogers place east of town, and made away with a brand new $35 saddle. One f the boys purchased the saddle in Athena only about two weeks ago. No clue as to the identity of the thief. NOTICE OF CITY BUDGET FOR 1928 AND HEARING THEREON .
