Mrs. John Stanton is visiting re latives in Pendleton, this week. Mrs. W. S. Ferguson spent Satur day visiting Walla Walla friends. Bob Record and a group of friends motored here from Umapine Sunday. Mrs. Charles Downing who resides at Ferndale, was in Athena, Monday. Mrs. Alvin Johnson is reported to be quite ill at her home near Athe na. Mrs. Harper of Pendleton spent Thursday at the home of Mrs. 0. 0. Stephens. Mrs. Cecile Sturgis has returned to Seattle, after a visit with her par ents here. Arch Henderson automobile sales man was here from Walla Walla Wednesday. Mrs. Armond DeMerritt was here from Wallu Walla Wednesday visit ing friends. Dave Stone recently disposed of a quarter section of wheat land to Ralph Allen. Mrs. E. J. Burchill spent Thursday night at the home of her daughter Mrs. C. M. Eager. Many Athena people enjoyed hear ing the big Dempsey-Tunney fight broadaest last Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Shelton have taken housekeeping rooms in the Gerald Kilgore residence on Jefferson street. Miss Wavel Mitchell, who makes her home on Weston Mountain was a week end guest at the home of her cousins Ethel and La Vone Pittman in Athena. McEwen motored to Pendleton Tuesday after noon. Mrs. Sarah Gross, Mrs. Bryce Ba ker and Mrs. Justin Harwood were Pendleton visitors Tuesday after noon. Paul Lieuallen, Dean Dudley and Bryce Baker motored to the C. H. Banister ranch northwest of Helix Sunday. The first meeting of the Jolly Twenty club will be held Wednesday October 6 at the home of Mrs. Ar chie Mclntyre. Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Watts who have been in Canada since the middle of August are expected home about October fourth. Adams high school held Athena high to a 0-0 score in a practice scrimmage, on the local gridiron, last Friday evening. ... . ; Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Mclntyre left Wednesday morning for Salem, where they will attend the State Fair. They expect to return Sunday. Mrs. N. K. Wall will return to Athena from Kelso, Washington, next week to reside. She will occupy her residence on Third street. E. C. McCook, democratic nominee for county judge, was in Athena Tuesday from Pendleton, sizing up the political situation here. Mr. and Mrs. Will Kirk and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Crabill were in Wal la Walla yesterday and attended the funeral cf the late James Kirk. Mr. and Mrs. August Biner of Con don spent Tuesday night at the Hen ry Miller home in Athena. Mrs. Biner is a niece of Mrs. Miller. The Athena bridge club is meeting at the home of Mrs. R. B. McEwen today, the feature being a cooperat ive luncheon served at one o'clock. Mrs. Louis Keen has returned to her home west of town, after a week's confinement in the Walla Wal la hospital, from a minor operation. C. L. McFadden, democratic nomi nee for representative in the legisla ture, from Umatilla county, was in Milton and Freewater Tuesday after noon. C. A. Hales of Waitsburg and Marvin Hoskins of Stanfield spent Monday night in Athena. They are trailing a band of sheep from Pilot Rock to Pasco. Mac Hoke well known Pendleton sheepman, accompanied by his two little daughters and his father who makes his home in Oklahoma, called on Athena friends Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ames will leave Saturday for a week's vacation They will visit at La Grande, and al so Yakima and Prosser, before their return. They will make the trip by motor. Charles Betts, who has been vis iting relatives at Brooklyn, N. Y, will return home next week. En route he will spend a couple of day at the Sesqui exposition at Phila delphia. Mrs. M. M. Johns spent the first of the week in Walla Walla, where she attended the funeral of her kinsman the late James Wilson, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Daisy Tompkins. Students from Athena at Univer sity of Oregon have been pledged to these sororities: Gamma Phi Beta, Miss Blanche Johnson; Sigma Nu Wilbur Harden, James Hodgen and Leon Kretzer. . Dale Stephens suffered a severely sprained ankle in football scrimmage Monday, and as a result it is feared he is out of the game for the season, Thus depriving the Athena team of one of its best players. Rogers & Goodman sold and deliv ered four I. H. C, potato digging machines this week. Indications point to a good crop of potatoes : on the mountain ranches, and farmers will commence digging them soon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Alderman of Pendleton stopped and visited a short time at the home of Mrs. Dora San chez in Athena, Sunday. They were on their way to Milton. Mr. and Mrs. Alderman formerly resided here. Mrs. w. J. orabm received news of the death of an uncle, James Kirk, in Spokane Monday. Mr. Kirk was at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lucy Frazier when he passed away. The funeral was held in Walla Walla yes terday. Mr. and Mrs. 0. E. Venable of Can yon City, spent the fore part of the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Venable returned to their home Wednesday morning after attending to business in Athena. W. W. EdwardB, who recently com pleted the concrete Work on the W, S. Ferguson residence will construct a sidewalk for Mrs. Celia Burden. He recently finished the , concrete work for will Campbell's new garage and work shop. Interesting visitors at the home of Mrs. M. M. Johns last week, were Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Proebstel of New York City. The lady, who is well known in Grand Opera as Alice Gentle, has a winter engagement in New York in her profession, under the management of her husband, who is a nephew of Mrs. Johns. Herman Geissel returned from the John Day country Monday, bringing out a four-pointer buck that weighed 220 pounds, dressed. He accompanied his hunting partner, Glen Arbogast, who had his tonsils removed, and re turned Tuesday to finish his vacation In the hills of the John Day. A Christmas Seal Sale. MMMIIMliIMMMMi High School Notes Mr. Jones, salesman for the Curtis Publishing Company, was at the Athena High school Monday. ' The students have' again undertaken to sell "The Country Gentleman," "The Ladies' ; Home Journal," and "The Saturday Evening . Post." The stu dent body has been divided into three groups: one group called "Sea Dogs"- with Belle Anderson' captain, another entitled "Pirates" with Edna Pinker- ton captain and the third is the "Buc caneers with . Dorothy- Geissel cap tain. In the past four years that Mr. Jones has been coming here, .it has been customary for the . two sides, having least number of subscriptions, to entertain the victorious side at a party. This enterprise is not only to secure subscriptions for the Curtfa company, but also an aid to the athle tic fund. Fifty cents of each ub scription is placed in this fund. Umatilla County Teachers Institute will be held in Pendleton, on October 7 and 8. All teachers of the Athena school will attend and there wijl be no school on these two days. Several new books have been re ceived for the school library. The schopl board has authorized the purchase of an electric eraser cleaner, and some new labratory equipment. V . . Fire drill, was held Monday after noon, ihe building was emptied in twenty seven seconds. This is the fastest drill that has peen held for some time. Mr. R. J. Hammer, a music instruc tor of La Grande, was a school vis itor Monday. Mr. Hammer is direct or of Orchestras and Glee clubs, and he has several classes in Umatilla county. He would like " to start an orchestra or glee club here. Miss Blanche Johnson, who is at tending school at the University of Oregon, has been pledged to Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. "Lefty" Kretzer, Wilbur Harden and James Hodgen who are . attending school at Univer sity of Oregon, have been pledged to the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Dean Pinkerton president of last year's graduating class, has accepted a position with the Standard Oil company. ; The Freshman initiation was held at the high school Friday evening September 24. The members of the Freshman class were taken to the auditorium where each of them was required to give a "stunt" of some kind and a green cap was presented to each. This program furnished much fun for the rest of the high school students, teachers and the alumni who were guests at the in itiation. , Everyone then adjourned to the party room '. in the basement and the sophomores proceeded to show the Freshies the mysteries of initiation. When they were finally installed as respective Freshmen, re freshments were served by .the Sophomores to all guests and Fresh' men. - ,. . ... June Saunders of the first and second grade room was out of school two days this week on account of ill ness. , - - Mrs. C. A. Barrett visited school this week. Literary programs were given in both Miss Rodman's and Mr. Miller's rooms last Friday afternoon. Granville Cannon went on a hunt ing trip over the week end. . Ruth Williams was a high school visitor Monday. Athena and Adams played a prac tice game on the local field last Fri day evening. The game ended with out any score being made. The Wes ton team witnessed the- game. We have lost Dale Stephens our quarterback, because of a sprained ankle he received in practice Monday evening. .. .
