Huffman have have entered the Athena school. Mrs. A. J. Wagner is ill at lier home in the north part of town. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton of Milton, were in Athena Wednesday. Mrs. Jess While was in town Wed nesday from Plue Mountain station. Miss Gladys McLeod left Saturday for Portland, where .she will visit friends. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hansell and children spent Sunday at Bingham Springs. Mrs. A. M. Johnson and daughters Blanche and Lois were in Pendleton Saturday. Warren Allen and family of Salem are visiting at the Ralph Allen home west of Athena. Mrs. Ella Haines of Terrebonne, Oregon, was a guest this week of Mrs. Mattie Mitchell. Frank Eeale and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Beale, were in Athena Tues day, from La Grande. Rebekah lodge will meet Tuesday September 14, and all members are requested to be present. Sanford Stone and Ed Welch are remodeling the Welch bachelor quarters on Main street. Art Douglas and Will Piper are hunting deer this week in the moun tains south of Pilot Rock. A number of Athena fight fans at tended a good bout program at Wal la Walla, Monday evening. James Wilson has returned to town from the D. B. Banister farm, and will enter the Athena school. Ferguson's new resi dence. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Geissel and Mr. and Mrs. Standage of Milton vis ited relatives and friends in Athena, Sunday. Bob Proudfit and Billy Pinkerton spent Monday in their old fishing, haunts on the Umatilla, with fair success. Jess Gordon left Tuesday for Soap Springs, where he will visit Mrs. Gordon who is taking treatments at that place. Miss Hilda Dickenson spent the week end in Walla Walla, as a guest of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece. Sam Pambrun and sons Fay and George, returned from a successful fishing trip in the northern part of Idaho, last week. Miss Maude Sherman and mother have returned to Estacada, where Miss Sherman will again teach in the schools at that place. j Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dell of Athe na and Mr. and Mrs. Armond DeMer ritt of Walla Walla, spent the week end at Wallowa Lake. Mrs. Richardson and Miss Endicott of the McDonald School of Music in Pendleton were in town last Satur day to organize a class. Mrs. D. II. Mrs. Jennie Barrett has returned from a visit to Portland, and was ac companied home by the little daugh ters of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Barrett, Miss Kathryn Mclntyre returned to Athena, Sunday, from Tillamook, where she has spent the summer at the home of her sister, Mrs. Glen Shelley. Mrs. David Stone sang at the fun eral of Mrs. Earl Gillanders in Pen dleton Wednesday morning. She was accompanied by Mrs. 0. Stephens, Fay Le Grow, Rich Thompson and Everett Rothrock had a good time fishing in Salmon river last week, The trip was made with saddle horses and a pack outfit. Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Johnson and Mrs. Lula Barnes, of Pasadena, Cal ifornia, are visiting at the Alvin Johnson home and will remain until after the Round-Up. Word has been received by friends that Mr. ond Mrs. Harry Kellat of Bend, contemplate attending tl: Round-Up, ond visiting friends Athena and Pendleton. - Miss May Lanning, who has con ducted a beauty parlor in Athena for some time, will hereafter have a booth in Miss Pearl Ramsey's Beauty Shoppe, on Main street. J. M. Banister was campaigning in Athena Wednesday. He leaves the impression of being interested in the senatorship, there having been an other entrant the first of this we?k, Mr. and Mrs. Armond DeMerritt entertained a number of their friends at their home in Walla Walla, at din ner last evening. After dinner, host, hostess and guests enjoyed the dance at Edgewater. Jimmie Creswell, who is employed at the Standard Oil company station in Athena, and filled the vacancy made by the departure of Mr. Miller, left Wednesday night for Portland, where he will visit. School started Tuesday in District 113, with Mrs. Katherine Mulkey, of MHltnomah, as teacher. Alfred Pam brun will have charge of the school bus again this year. Ten pupils have enrolled in District 113. Leon Miller and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cutler, Mr. ond Mrs. Jesse Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, Miss Lois Smith and Mr, Harold Johnson spent Saturday and Sunday at Bingham Springs. Week end guests at the home of Mrs. Mattie Mitchell were Mr. and Mrs. William Lathrop and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dawes of Seattle. Mr. Dawes and Mrs. Lathrop are cpusin3 of Mrs. Mitchell and A. A. Foss. The ladies of the M. E. Aid society will hold a cooked food sale tomor row afternoon at the Eastern Mer cantile store. Chicken, cake and good things to eat will be sold. There will also be home made bread for sale. August Beiner and Mae Russell spent Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Miller. They were on their way to their homes at Condon, after a visit in Lewiston, where Mr. Beiner's wife is taking treatments. Mrs. Miller and Mae Russel are sisters. A. W. The new garage for the state high way maintenance department has been completed on the state's proper ty in Athena, and is now being used by the local motor equipment. Etta, Jhe adopted daughter of P. J. Beale, former resident of Athena, died at a hospital in LaGrande, Mon day! &?ed 20 years. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Athena, Tuesday afternoon, and in terment took place in the family lot at Athena cemetery. Mrs. J. A. Creiehton of Colfax, who has spent several days in Athena, re turned to her home Wednesday. She attended the funeral Tuesday of her little nephew, Jimmy Wagner, who died Monday in "Walla Walla. Mrs. Creighton is a daughter of Mrs. A. J. Wagner of this city.- ....... Mr. Wilson is employed in the machine shops of the Tacoma street railway company. Miss Ruth Proebstel. who gradu ated from Monmouth normal school. Washincton. schools, has resigned and accepted the position , of instructor in music of the grade schools at Walla Walla. Her mother accompanied her. Trapp got out of it with minor injuries. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba left Wednesday morning accompanied by Mrs. Z,erba's mother, Mrs. Charles Stockstill and brother, for Lebanon. Mrs. Stockstill and son have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. Zerba for some time and are returning home. The party will drive as far as Leban on the first day where they will spend a few days with Mrs. Stock- still's sister, Mrs. W. L. Carter.
