Charles Norris made a businens vsit in Walla Walla Tuesday. Friends of Dr. Dell will be sadden ed to hear that his condition is very critical. Ed Burlingame, prominent Walla Walla farmer was a visitor here Tuesday. A. L. McEwen and family motored to Summerville and Wallowa Lake Tuesday. J. A. Kellar of Helix well known here was greeted by Athena friends Wednesday. Mrs. Arthur Coppock who has been quite ill for the past week is able to be up. Mildred Hansell spent the week end in Athena, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Boyd. William MeBride of Portland, was in Athena Tuesday, shaking hands with old-time friends. Mrs. George Banister is enjoying a visit with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Eider in Walla Walla. Henry Koepke Jr., and Ralph Mc Ewen attended the wrestling bouts in Pendleton Monday night. Mrs, Claud Dickenson is substitut ing at the local telephone exchange, during the vacation season.. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Russell spent the week end at Lostine, where Mr. Russell enjoyed the time fishing. Mr. and Mrs. James Lumsden and Mr. and Mis. William MeBride arriv ed by motor from Portland Tuesday. Mrs. Sarah Jane Bowles of Walla Walla is a guest at the home of her daughter Mrs. F. S. Legrow, this week. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley, Verne Dudley and Miss Helen Eubcnks spent the week end at Bingham Springs. Miss Anna G. Hall, county librar ian made her usual visit of inspec tion at the Athena Branch Library Wednesday. Leon Miller and father Charles Miller are drilling a well on the Hamp Booher property on south Third street. Mrs. Jesse Smith and daughters and Mrs. Charles Smith spent Wed nesday at the home of Mrs. Hutt in Walla Walla. Lee Banister is driving the Con tinental oil truck during Grant Prest bye's absence. Mr. and Mrs.. Prest bye are in Canada. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece pf Walla Walla were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Dickenson, Monday. . Bryce -Baker, Penn Harris, Alfred Pambrun and Dr. . Cowan arrived home this week from a fishing trip to Clearwater, Idaho. The workmen will begin pouring concrete next Monday for the new residence being built by Max Hopper on South Third Street. E. 0. Lee and family left Satur day for Portland and Seaside, where they will visit for a while. The trip is being made by motor. Walter Adams will' leave shortly for Seattle to join his wife who has been spending the summer with her mother in the Sound City. The little daughter of Mr and Mrs. Frank Coppock, who has been ser iously ill, is reported to be improving as well as could be expected. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dell and Miss Hilda Dickenson were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Armond DeMerrit in Walla Walla Wednesday evening. Miss Thena Russell who has spent several weeks in Condon, where she has been visiting her sister Mrs. El mer Booher, is expected home this week. Art Shick motored to Hot Lake, Tuesday and spent the day at the bedside of his sister, Mrs. Z. W. Lockwood who is critically ill in a sanitarium there. Little Miss Marjorie Martin suf fered an attack of appendicitis last Eaturday and was quite ill for a few days. She is now reported to be get ting along nicely. Relatives have received word from Hot Lake sanitarium to the effect that the illness of Mrs. Z. W. Smith of Pendleton and Gus Byers will leave next week by motor for the Univer sity of Virginia where they will matriculate for study. The early harvest has offered a brief respite for farmers and many families are enjoying motor trips to beach and mountain resorts before the fall seeding season. The car of Mrs. C. L. Woodward was damaged in Walla Walla when it was struck by a truck at an in tersection while Mrs. Woodward was waiting for some horses to pass. Robert Cutler of the State . High way department, is having the lots leveled on the Main street property, where the department vill soon be gin the construction of a building. Mrs. R. B. McEwen and Mrs. A. L. McEwen spent Wednesday night at Walla Walla, where they attended a kitchen shower in honor of Miss Helen Eubanks, popular bride elect. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Logsdon and daughter , Dona Jean left Saturday for Wallowa Lake, where they wiil spend a period of two weeks, enjoy ing a recreation at the popular re sort. Rich Thompson and family and A. L. McEwen and family will leave Sunday morning for Spokane and Montana points. They will go by motor and will be away for a fort night. Mrs. Vaughn, mother of Mrs. W. S. Ferguson, has been seriously ill this week at the home of her daugh ter. Mrs. Vaughn is 86 years of age, and has lately been in failing health. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Bevans and children of Seattle, were in Athena for a short time Monday. They were former residents of Athena and at one time Mr. Bevans owned the Athena Restaurant. Mrs. Edwards, mother of Mrs R. A. Thompson, has returned to her home at Forest Grove, after an ex tended visit in Athena. She was ac companied by Mr. Thompson as far as Heppner, Sunday. Weston Leader: Mr. and Mrs. Har rison Kirk and son Clifton Kirk, Mr. and Mrs. Ray O'Harra and Willard O'Harra were dinner guests at Athe na Sunday of the Willard Crabills, parents of Mrs. O'Harra. Miss Hilda Dickenson and Miss Edna Pinkerton will leave tomorrow for Wallowa Lake, where they vill join Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cockburn of Milton, who are camped there. They will later go on to Baker to visit. William McKenzie, former Weston resident, now of Montana, wa.i in Athena Tuesday. An oil well is be ing "spudded in" at Mr. McKenaie's Montana ranch, and he expects to be successful in his petroleum venture. John Sank and Raymond Serwekh of Peoria, Illinois were guests last week and until Tuesday of the pres ent week of Herman Hoffman. The men and Mr. Hoffman were boyhood friends and were from the home town of Mr. Hoffman. Mrs. Doc Booher and Mr. and Mrs. Marion Tedford of Miami, Florida, arrived here Saturday morning and visited until Monday at the Hamp Booher and William Booher homes. Monday they con tinued on their way, going to Lewis ton, where they will visit at the home of Mr. Tedford's sister. Mrs. Booher is a sister-in-law of Hamp and William Booher. Miss Lela Schubert, bookkeeper for the Peacock Milling company at Freewater, and her sister Miss Velma Schubert bookkeeper at the First National Bank in Athena left for Seaside Wednesday where they will spend their vacation. Mrs. Bryce Baker and Miss Jen nmae Read of Athena motored to Portland Sunday morning. At Ad ams Mr. and Mrs. Frances Lieuallen joined them driving their car. Mrs. Baker and Miss Read returned home the last of the week. Henry Dell is employing a novel method of lawn prinkling during the embargo placed by the authorities on use of city water for irrigating. He pumps water from his well into a tub, and the water is syphoned from it through a hose to the lawn. Jimmie, the four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ace Wagner of Athe na was taken to the hospital Sunday where an operation was performed for relief from an acute attack of ap pendicitis.. The little boy is said to be in a very critical condition.. Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Read left this week for the coast, where they will spend a couple of weeks. At Port land, they were joined by Mr. Read's sister, Mrs. A. A. Wood and husband, who accompanied them to the beach. W. O. Read took his fishing tackle with him, for fear. E. C. Rogers and his band of boy campers, including Emory and Ken neth Rogers and Stafford and Billy Hansell, were brought home Sunday evening by Marion Hansell. Several days were spent at Bingham Springs, where a fine time was enjoyed in camping, swimming and fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hegg and two daughters and Miss Stendal of Sedro Wooley, Washington, spent the week end at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas. The party has been touring the east and many dif ferent states. They also have been through Yellowstone National park. A party motoring to Sunset Inn for dinner Sunday included, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. McEwen, Mrs. Henry Barrett of Athena, Miss Lizzie Mc Kenzie and Mrs.. A. B. McEwen of Portland, Mrs. Dora Scott of l.os Angeles, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Norvcll and Mr. and Mrs. Letcher Norvcll of Helix. Miss Lizzie McKenzie and Mrs. A. B. McEwen of Portland and Mrs. Dora Scott of Los Angeles, who have been visiting in Athena and vicinity for the past several weeks left Wed nesday morning, by motor, for Port land. Mrs. Scott wiil continue to her home making the remainder of the trip by boat. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Wood and Mr. adn Mrs. Jesse Myrick left yester day morning for a motor trip through Canada. They will visit at Lake Louise, Banff and other points of interest. On their return trip they expect to come through the wheatlands. They contemplate be ing away a couple cf weeks. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Lynn of Long Beach, Miss Amy Purcell of Fresno, California, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Purcell and Mrs. Gerking of Weston and Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Boyd were entertain ed at dinner Friday evening by Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Hansell, the occasion being in honor of Miss Mildred Han sell's eleventh birthday anniversary. Wilbur Fiske Brock, W3ll known newspaper man, visited Athena friends Monday night. Mr. Brock owns wheat lands in this vicinity and also farms extensively at Sum merville and near Joseph. Mr. Brock reports normal crops in Wallowa county with the exception of fields that were damaged by the late frosts. Miss Dorothy Koepke arrived here from Portland for a two weeks' visit before leaving for New York. Miss Koepke will be one of a party of girls who will attend Art school in Italy during the coming year. The girls wilf be'ehaperoned by the form er matron of Hendrick's Hall at the University of Oregon and will sail from New York in September. George M. Banister, who has a private barnyard golf court, will have to do some diligent practicing to enter this class of players. E. I. Newton and E. McMillan made one of the best scores ever registered on the Laurelhurst park horseshoe courts when in a 25-point game New ton pitched 25 ringers for 25 points and McMillan pitched 23. The aver age was 6 per cent of ringers for Newton. Newton throws a -tarn shoe and McMillan a 1 -turn. Miss Ruth Williams who has been away for several weeks returned to her homo in Athena Saturday. Mi3s Williams visited at Portland, Mc Minnville and other cities. At Ore gon City she was joined by her cous in Dieksy Dryden, who will visit here for some time. Miss Jaunita Wood ruff who left here with Miss Wil liams and who was with her on her visit to the various cities, continued on to San Francisco, where she will spend about 3 weeks with her moth er Mrs. Riley before returning to Athena.
