Miss Seville Martz of Pendleton was a week end guest at the A. E. Shick home. . Lee Whitehead's barber shop is all dressed up in a new coat of paint and calsomine. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cannon and child ren were guests at the A. M. Ross home in Weston. A. L. Swaggart is here on a brief visit from his home at Montavilla, suburb of Portland. Newly painted and enameled white, Steve's Grocery presents a tip-top, attractive appearance. Joseph Scott, who resides in Pen dleton but farms west of Athena was here Wednesday. Electrician Armstrong is engaged in rebuilding and repairing the elect ric line in Weston, for the Preston Shaffer Milling company. Mrs. Cecile Sturgis is in Athena, from her home in Seattle, visiting at the home of her parents. Mrs. Lilla Kirk and son John left today for Wenatchee, for a week's visit with Mrs. Kirk's sister. Glenn Dudley was campaigning ii Pilot Rock .Tuesday. Mr. Dudley is a candidate for representative. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards and son will motor to Yakima today, re turning home Sunday evening. County Judge I. M. Schannep, candidate for re-election, was in town from Pendleton, Tuesday. Strawberries have made their ap pearance in the Athena stoves, and the fruit on display is of excellent quality. Mr. and Mrs. Cass Cannon left this week for Prineville, where they will visit their daughter, Mrs. Bob Raymond. Mrs. Sims Dickenson and daughter Thyllis, were in Walla Walla Wed nesday and visited at the T. P. De Freece home. Gus Schubert, who last week suf f( red a paralytic stroke, at the homo oi his brother, Amicl hchubert, is reported better. C. W. Bradley, republican candi date for county treasurer, was in Athena Tuesday, interviewing re publican voters. Mrs. L. M. I.eeper, Mrs. Nellie Taylor and Mrs. ("lore of Pendleton, visited at the Bert Logsdon home one day this week. J. A. Murray of Pendleton and manager of the Telephone and Tele graph company in this district was in Athena, Tuesday. "The Street of Forgotten Men" Sunday night, Standard Theatre. The road crew is engaged in oil ing the shoulders on the highway east of Athena, working this way from the State line. Mrs. Jacob Booher came up from Pendleton Wednesday," and spent the day at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Walker. B. B. Richards will have a well dug at his home on Jefferson street. He will install a small pumping plant for irrigation purposes. Miss Maebelle Duncan, nurse at St. Mary's hospital at Walla spent the week-end at the home of her parents, south of Athena. J. C. Baker and Willard Beery left Tuesday morning for Portland on a business trip. They expect to re turn the latter part of this week. Mrs. M. L. Watts, Mrs. H. I. Watts and Mrs. R. B. McEwen motored to Walla Walla yesterday where they attended a luncheon at the Country club. Robert Blomgren, a well known young larmer ot Weston, was recently operated on at Walla Wal la, as the result of an attack of ap pendicitis. 0. E. Venable, who moved from Athena to Pendleton some time ago, has leased a 20-acre alfalfa farm near Hermiston, and will reside there in the future. Fred Baddeley who has recently sold his ranch on the mountains will leave shortly for Lo Angeles, where he will join his brother J. C. Bad deley and family. The eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Whitehead cut his arm quite severe ly when he fell on a barb wire fence. Dr. Sharp took a couple of stitches to close the wound. Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Watts of Athe na and Mr. and Mrs. Fitgzerald of Pendleton have returned to their homes from a fishing trip to Lost Creek, near Spokane. The J. T. club will hold a picnic Sunday May 16th at Licuallen's cab in, near Emigrant Springs. Husbands and families of the members will be guests on the outing. Miss May Lanning who has been ouite ill at the home of her mother in Walla Walla, returned to Athena, Wednesday, and will resume her duties as a marcellist. The Bend Bulletin speaks in high terms if the Bend high school play, "Stop Thief," recently presented at the Capital Theatre there, under dir ection of Miss Blanche Drake. Mrs. Fred Kershaw has arrived home from a visit with her sister, Mrs. 0. 0. Castleman, at Ontario, Oregon. She was accompanied home by her mother, Mrs. Barbara Willa by. Mrs. O. M. Castleman and daugh ter Barbara, of Ontario spent Sun- j day night in Athena, having brought over in her car, her mother and sis I ter, Mrs. Barbara Willaby and Mrs. Tom Mix in "Teeth" Standard Theatre Wednesday night "Dutch" McPherrin's services as a catcher, are in demand by baseball clubs. Sunday last he caught for the Echo team, and next Sunday he has been engaged to hold position behind the plate for the Arlington team. Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton assisted by Mrs. Virgil Zerba entertained the 0. D. 0. club Wednesday, The club will have their annual picnic next Thursday at Cayuse, when all mem bers and families are urged to be Walla, ' present. Wilbur Harden and James Hodgen will leave next week for a few days visit in the Willamette valley. They will be on the campuses at 0. A. C, and U. of 0. Incidentally they will take in a coast league ball game or two, at Portland. Loren Basler, former coach at Athena high school, now coach at the Boise, Idaho, high school, was in Athena Monday evening for a short time. "Baz" was on his way to Mos cow,, with a bunch of his athletes, who will participate in the Idaho state track meet. At the meeting of Rebekah lodge Tuesday evening, it was decided that Mrs. Maude Logsdon and Mrs. Laura Gross would represent the local lodge at the grand lorUe convention at Sa lem May 25. Miss Gladys McLeod and Mrs. Verva Baker served delic ious refreshments. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight L. Hackett will leave shortly by motor for Cal ifornia. They will visit relatives at Modesto, and Petaluma and expect to go as far south as Los Angele3 before returning to Athena. Evan gelist Hutton will conduct services at the Christian church until Pastor Hackett returns. Mr. and Mrs. Forest Zerba and sons left Tuesday morning by auto, going as far as Lebanon, taking Miss Lola Stockstill, sister of Mrs. Zerba with them, and who will go on from there to Garnts Pass, where her home is. Mr. and Mrs. Zerba will remain in Lebanon for a week and will visit relatives. The Etude club was represented at Pendleton at the Woman's club meet ing last night when Mrs. David Stone, Mrs. R. B. McEwen and Miss Lorraine Terry sang a trio, arrange ment of "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." They were accomanpied by Mrs. 0. 0. Stephens. Mrs. M. L. Watts acted as chauffer for the party. Fred Kershaw. Mrs. Fred Kershaw will leave Fri day morning for Pullman, Washing ton where she will attend the com mencement exercises of her daugh ter Fredcrica, who is a member of the nineteen twenty-six class. The members of the sophomore class of Athena high school are thankful to the ladies who gave them flowers for decorative purposes at the Christian church, when the bac calaureate exercises were held. ,m; : I High School Notes ; All high school pupils will report at the school house for their report cards, Friday at one o'clock. The 6th grade had its examinations in physiology and Oregon History Thursday and the 7th grade had its examination in Geography. The 8th grade pupils had their examinations on Thursday and Friday. These were state examinations. Wednesday at 3 p. m. the pupils of the 5th and 6th grades gave a surprise party for Miss Rodman. Those on the honor roll for the past six weeks were: Edna DeFreeee 92; Kathleen Radtke 92; Belle Anderson 92; Jessiedeane Dudley 91 and " Phyllis Dickenson 90. They said they had plenty to eat and good swimming and the only trouble had was by those who got stuck in the mud. The special guests were George Pambrun, Mrs. Camp bell, Mr. and Mrs. Reeder, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Moore, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, and Mrs. Eager. The schedule for final examinations is as follows: Tuesday a. m., Eng lish I, II, III and IV; Tuesday p. m., General Science, Biology and Chem istry; Wednesday a. m., Sewing, Al gebra, Geometry and Bookkeeping; Wednesday p. m., Latin I and II, Spanish, Typing I and II; Thursday a. m., U. S. History and Civics; Thursday p. m., Geography. The only two pupils receiving ex emptions in all subjects were Belle Anderson and Edna DeFreeee. Those receiving exemptions in three sub jects were: Phyllis Dickenson, La Vone Pittman, Alberta Charlton, Jessiedeane Dudley, Kathleen Rad tke. . 1'hpse receiving . two exemp tions were: Lois Mclntyre, Charlotte Gross, Emma Ringel, Genevieve Rog ers, Juanita Woodruff and Fred Radtke. Those receiving one exem tion were: Doris Schubert, Jenna- mae Read, Lenore McNair, Lois Johnson, Allen Simpson, Ray Dud ley, Leonard Geissel, Dorsey Kretzer, Ethel Pittman, Melvin Coppock, Wil liam Coppock, Arthur Taylor, Mar garet Lee and Weldon Bell. Miss Terry's room went out for a nature study hike early Wednesday morning. The 5th and 6th grade room will have new seats next year. A new dictionary has been ordered for the 7th and 8th grade rooms. Fred Pinkerton treated the facul ty to ice cream Tuesday. He was voted the best janitor in the world. The school paper is to be complet- ted soon after school is out. The Senior class received their pictures Wednesday. Gunnell and Robb of Pendleton did the work. The school publication for this year will be the "Athenian," a small annual. It will contain pictures of the different classes, football and basketball teams, play cast and high school faculty. Under the heading! of athletics there will be summaries of the. high school work in basket ball and football, tennis and track. The declamatory work will give an interesting summary of the high school play and all declamatory con tests. The different class activities will be given for the entire term,. Two other important articles that will appear in the annual are the Senior class wills and Senior class prophecy. Owing to the fact of a larger publication this year, a small J fee of fifteen cents each will be charged high school students and twenty-five cents each for those out side of high school. C The Washing ton government has ordered a cruiser to Bluefields, Nicaragua, to safeguard American interests in Nicaragua.
