A bill has been introduced in Con
gress, which if passed will award to
the city of Pendleton a cannon or field

A divorce decree has been granted
by Circuit Judge Phelps to Maxine
W. Wallan, from Claude B. Wpllan.
The plaintiff was given her maiden
name of Maxine Elliott.
The East Oregonian reports that 300
acres of wheat on the McComas ranch,
near that city, will have to be roseeded
to replace the growing crop which has
been killed by freezing weather. . :

Additional moisture has been stored
this week by a series of light snow
falls. The snow fell practically all day
Wednesday, but at first melted as fast
as it fell. Quite heavy snows are re
ported in the foothills and on the moun
tains. The Foss Hardware store has taken
the agency for Parr's Rose Gardens,
of Freewater. and you can now order
your cut flowers and funeral designs
direct from them. They will keep a
line of potted plants in stock at the
Store, where you can make your se

FLU BAN OFF AGAIN,
SCHOOL STARTED MONDAY
With the disappearaic-', t jnporarily
at least of the flu epidemic in Athena,
the ban on public gatherings' has been
lilted.
After being closed for many weeks,
the Athena schools openedp again
Monday morning with a good attend
ance, and the studentB seemed pleased
to have the opportunity of returning to
their studies after their enforced va
cation. While the school work for the year
as a whole has been bsdly shattered by
the epidemic, which enforced closing
the schools, in a measure, the work
has advanced as well as cdSild be ' ex
pected, under a system of correspond
ence, inaugurated' shortly after the
school closed.
If the school is permitted to continue
without further interruption until the
close of the present semester, it is ex
pected that much of the work will be
made up. This week the teachers have
accom'lished much in regaining the
threads of the school system, and by
next week the work wilU again be in
smooth running jJ
The burning of the mortgage in cel
ebration; of the lifting of ft-he debt on
the lodg home of Hercules Lodge, No.
61, of Milton, was the occasion of the
gathering of Knights of Pythias at
Milton Tuesday night.
Glenn Estes has been in the city for
several days visiting fiiends. Mr.
Estes is employed in a drugstore in
Portland, but on account of illness, has
been at the home of bis mother in Pen
dleton for several weeks.
Just 50 years ago Tuesday, according
to the East Oregonian, the county seat
of Umatilla county was changed from
the town of Umatilla to.Pendleton. It
was at this time that the first town
lots were laid out in Pendleton.
I Three years ago about this minute,
Athena was wading between huge
banks bf snow. At that time a total
of 2 inches was the depths of snow
on the level. Business was at a stand
still and'no trains were running.

Mrs. Ethel Scott was in the city
couple of days this week, driving over
with Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Gerking from
Walla Walla. Mrs. Scott was calling
on friends and relatives. She is now
director of the choir of the Christian
church in Walla Walla.

delivery service for Athena merchants
and business houses, began work Sat
urday, delivering in his new Ford
truck. He had an extremely-strenuous
time in making deliveries. "Saturdays
are the heavy delivery dayai and the
man new at the business with a new
car and no previous knowledge of op
erating it surely had his lunula full.
Mr. Rice was materially relieved in
his new work by Miss Wiley, teacher
in the public achools, who, being an
expert driver, volunteered to drive the
car for Ihe day.

It has been suggested that Assessor
C. P. Strain be invited to come to
Athena and address the voters here on
the proposed bonding measure for good
roads. Mr. Strain opposed the former
bond issue, but is taking active inter
est in the successful termination of
the present road movement, and is
giving it his unqualified support.
With the lifting of the influenza ban.
the local library has been reopened, in
accordance with its former schedule of
service. Mrs. R. A. Thompson has
been appointed to (ill the vacancy on
the Board. A large list of new books
have arrived, and are ready for dis
tribution. The liBt is unavoidably
crowded out of the Press columns this
week, but will appear later. The list
comprises about 175 new books.
Mrs. Cass Cannon has returned home
from Prineville, where several weeks
aan nhe was culled by the sickness in
her daughter's family. Both Mr and
MrB. Raymond and child were ill on
her arrival, and the nurse also took to
her bed with i lfluenza. All recovered,
however, and weie doing well when
Mrs. Cannon left for home. She re
ports a very serious epidemic prevailed
at that time in tne vicinity of Prine
ville. Benny Oakes, well known in Uma
tilla county as a participant at Round
Up exhibitions, hs been discharged
from the service and arrived in Athena
Tuesday morning from Camp Lewis.
